Is there such a thing as being 'shit at math' when you're good everywhere else?

Does it just stem from lack of drive and laziness?

yeah, and low iq

I am good at physics but suck at calculus. But this calculus is like a really difficult theory course and not your normal calculus. We do a lot of proofs. I don't know what you mean math but I figure if it was just computation calculus with no proofs then I would do well but as it stands down now I have a much higher mark in my other classes than calculus.

Why are these called closed forms: pi, e, sqrt(2), ln(3)

Why aren't integrals called closed forms?

What's the point of finding closed forms of integrals or sums?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>7710383
It actually characterizes the functions into certain groups or categories depending on whether you can find elementary antiderivatives for example. It's a very strong theoretical study, at first sight it's obviously dumb just like "straightedge-compass constructions" seems arbitrary and dumb until you use field theory to study it
>>
>>7710383
>Why are these called closed forms: pi, e, sqrt(2), ln(3)
Closed form is a hazy definition to begin with in my experience. Generally it refers to elementary functions like Sin[x], Sqrt[x], Exp[x], Log[x] or constants like Pi. I can't tell you why such functions are considered elementary. For example, the error function has a relation to Exp[x] but it is considered special.

>Why aren't integrals called closed forms?
Not all integrals can be defined in terms of elementary functions or known special functions without creating new functions altogether.

>What's the point of finding closed forms of integrals or sums?
Because it is easier to describe integrals and sums in terms of what is known out there. Look at your pic OP. It's easier to describe the sum in terms of 3 constants (two Pis and an integer) than it is to wield around an infinite sum.
>>
>>7711042
yeah, closed is sort of a social definition. functions or constructions are considered 'closed' when there is a concensus that they are easy to work with or considered familiar enough to us.

Why is calculus so depressing? It's supposed to be simple as fuck, yet I'm sitting here looking at the tasks our prof gave us and it only makes me want to jump out the window.
I never liked math, but was fairly good at it, but the jump between high school and this is just insane. I'm sweating, can't focus on a single thing for longer than 10 seconds and my stomach feels like it's going to implode.

What the fuck is happening to me? Did I just reach the limit of my intellectuals capabilities?
I don't want to be retarded, I think I'm gonna be an hero.

Did /sci/ feel the same on their first year?

Stop thinking that it's hard, or that it doesn't make sense.

It's not necessarily simple, but it does make sense. You're just missing something. Keep trying.

Calculus is literally baby "calculate X". Just see it as a method to calculate something.

Calc. requires shittons of focus and modern technology definitely lessens one's ability to focus. Enjoy having the attention span of a goldfish.

curvature is exactly what you think, except it is impossible to imagine in 3d.
I believe Warpage is when 2 very distant point in space can be connected with a short path through a worm hole.
the later is scifi bullshit.

Man, I wanna watch yours.

I'm bringing this issue to /sci/ because I hope that there are a lot of bio or pre-med majors who might be able to help me. If there's a certified doctor that would be amazing

I've had some very bad ED for a while now despite only recently turning 21. I've had some urologists diagnosis it as prostatitis but I'm not so sure. they have prescribed some anti-bionics and anti-inflammatory drugs, with little to no effect. I have pain in my testicles but also have experienced extreme erectile dysfunction for some time now.

Cialias was able to help my erections pretty well but only to some degree and when I ran out of free samples my progress was basically lost. I guess I could spend $8 a pill but I don't really have that money and it doesn't really solve my problem. I guess I'd rather be in pain and have firm erections but there's still something clearly wrong here and I've spent a good amount of money trying to find out what it is, to no avail.

This is a crapshoot, I've done a bit of research that yielded no real results. Some say stop eating meat, some say stop drinking caffeine, but I'm just trying to find some real verification and I like to think that those really interested in the field of medicine might have some insight. For some reason this led me to 4chan. I hope you guys can help because if I'm gonna be impotent for the rest of my life I'll probably be dead soon.

I also feel like I might have some circulation issues because sometimes I feel like my dick is much more cold than it used to be.

Anyway, troll me if you like. My life has turned into enough of a joke that nothing will really phase me anymore. but any suggestion is welcome.

Need more background info, things like past medical history, age, weight, ethnicity, comprehensive panel ect, it isn't easy with no blood tests, could be as simple as a vitamin deficiency with no blood tests.
>>
>>7709835
Thanks for the response. I have had blood tests, no real issues there from what has been brought. I think I'm gonna get a new blood test from possible increased estrogen levels if you think that might be a problem, but there has no been real decrease in testosterone. I was still afraid that my vegetarian diet was causing this so I recently starting eating meet again but it didn't really make a different. When I first stopped eating meat I got a blood test and they told me I was the most healthy I have been. I thought my adderall prescription combined with marijuana use might have caused this (I saw anecdotal stories on the internet that might confirm this) so I stopped using both but I had no real difference. I've been taking multi-vitamins recently as well. I'm getting more blood tests done soon for the possible increased estrogen levels (which kind of seems unlikely) and for a unrelated stomach condition. I'm going back to my urologist soon, what should I talk to him about to get the best procedure possible (in terms of tests and variables in my lifestyle?) english isn't my first language so I apologize for issues in what i say

So what is exactly Gravity is it a force or is it something else, just hurts my brain thinking about it.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>7709756
It's a force like magnetism; it can do work in the physics definition; thus, it is a force.

In layman's terms it's the attraction of matter to more matter; like how two magnets stick to each other, and how those two will gather more and more until there's a massive clump of magnets, and none in the immediate area.

Bad example, but it gets the point across. Swap magnets for any matter- gas, elements, molecules, rocks, planets... That's how you get atmospheres, solar systems, galaxies, and everything else down to the atomic level; that goes into things that I won't discuss here.

Earth rotates at 0.465km/s (at the equator)
Earth revolves at 30km/s
Sol revolves at 230km/s
The milky way is traveling 583 km/s through the universe.

The Milky Way and Andromeda are also converging at 112 km/s

If you live to be 100 you will have lasted one minute longer than someone who lived to be 100 and had no velocity with respect to the cosmic background radiation.

Hurrah for us, we be time traveling.

What does /sci/ think about cryogenic sleep?

There are some people who freeze their brains with the hope that they can be revived in the future.

But they're going to have to test the re-animation process on someone. Can you imagine being one of the first test subjects they try to awake from cryogenic sleep and they fuck it up?

You would have spent thousands of dollars to give yourself the experience of waking up from death just to experience the pain of dying again. It would be the closest thing to hell possible in that one instant.

Cryonics!='cryogenic sleep'

Cryonics is vitrifying people. This involves getting people injected with cryopreservant and getting them really really cold. These cryopreservants are toxic and the vitrification process causes cracks to form, so it is not currently reversible.

It's a stretch to call it sleep.

>>You would have spent thousands of dollars to give yourself the experience of waking up from death just to experience the pain of dying again. It would be the closest thing to hell possible in that one instant.

What makes you think it would be painful? And is it not worth it to extend your life even just a bit? Would you rather die in the next 60 seconds or pay $10,000 dollars and die in the next hour?
