Is linear algebra more useful than calculus? Should we teach that to HS students instead of calculus? Of course, if possible, we should teach both, but if you had to pick, which would you pick?
34 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Calculus. But really that's a dumb question, you need both for science.
>>
>>7712289
They are both useful but I personally like more linear algebra because I find calculus to be boring.

But the introductory topics in calculus are way way easier to grasp than the introductory topics in linear algebra. HS kids are already killing themselves because of calculus so I think we should leave them like that.
>>
>>7712289
Both are unnecessary. Absolutely everything is solvable by cross multiplication alone.

I'm trying to work through this exam problem, anyone know how to show that this mixture exists at vapor-liquid equilibrium? I assume I need to find a way t show that the fugacity of the vapor and liquid phases can be equal to each other at the given conditions but I'm not really sure how to start with all the information just thrown at me.

Anyone here into growing your own crystals? I'm bored shitless and I want some to grow, any ideas? Prefereably some realitively simple ones, but NO copper sulfate ones, I fucking mean it.

When can I call myself a mathematician?

I'm almost done with my bachelors in math
52 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>7711593
when you get your phd

in general, only phds are called scientist, physicist, mathematician, etc...
>>
When I hear the term, it means to me that you are working in the field or actively doing research. It's a description of what you do. Call yourself an artist if you do art. Call yourself a computer programmer if you program computers. Call yourself a mathematician if you do math.

Being a math student doesn't qualify in itself. There's a term for that.

I don't think you need to have a PhD or be a professor or anything like that. There are amateur mathematicians who make significant contributions.
>>
>>7711593
When you actually contribute something great to the field. Until then, you are just a hobbyist.

done with chemlambda. source: https://plus.google.com/+MariusBuliga/posts/2SZ9j3bk698

Hello Marius. How is this different than the work that has been done on simulated metabolic networks using graph grammars?

http://www.tbi.univie.ac.at/software/GGL/
>>
Wut.
>>
Mail me pls? GGL is great, I don't want to steal your thunder, I'm always open to discuss, are you? Chemlambda is a graph rewrite system (like GGL) with a random algorithm for reductions. Differences: (1) not any rule, but a small specific set of rules (why: because making rules is cheap and the explosion of consequences is huge), I think that by accepting any rule there are very small chances to fall over really interesting ones, have you seen what chemlambda does? (2) the accent is on individual molecules which eventually do the job in a random environment, instead of CRNs which explode (3) no need for the nodes to be atoms and for the bonds to be real chemical bonds (4) can GGL do lambda calculus? perhaps, by chance, see (1), (5) different graphs (open ribbon graphs) which changes the notion of context, but that's not very serious because there surely is a way to formulate everything so that contexts are half-edges instead of being atoms. (6) And hey, is just awk/sh and javascript, so it works on any computer (7) Has it's own definition of life.

What went wrong?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Lack of education and groupthink, which arises due to a lack of quality education (or any higher education at all in the case of lesswrong).
>>
>>7710841
The guy can't handle criticism.

HPMOR is a damn good story if you can get past the autistic main character. Same with TWC.
>>
I think what went wrong is that lesswrong was always more of a collection of insight porn than a real self-sustaining community, and kinda died when the constant stream of insight porn stopped.

What's your schedule next semester?

First year student here. Not 100% sure on major but thinking about Chemistry. What to expect out of Gen Chem. 1 and Calc 1? Also, I have to take either philosophy or psychology and I'm going philosophy, anyone have any opinions on Philosophy classes?

Well, I don't have a schedule next semester because I'm a horrible, lazy failure
but, I have taken both a psychology and a philosophy class before, and I personally enjoyed psychology more.
