Why is /sci/ so contrarian?
>"Going to Mars is pointless!"
>"Going to Venus is retarded!"
>"There are no aliens on Europa!"
>"Fusion power is 100 years away!"
>"Flying cars will never happen!"
>"Climate change doesn't exist!"
>>7714033
>Implying we aren't right.
>>7714033
They're hardly contrarian opinions. In fact, it's quite common for people to hold those views.
Now....get the fuck out....idiot.
Because they find popsci hype obnoxious and so get retarded in the oppisite direction, and also because they're terrible autists who love feeling like they're smarter than someone else.
That is why.
Is Medicine fuckin STEM master race now? It seems nobody wants to be involved with anything other than Medicine
>>7713784
Medicine isn't a STEM field moron. Learn what STEM actually means.
The 'M' is for medicine, of couse.
>>7713786
Isn't medicine a part of science? Then what is it? Art?
Why do humans naturally segregated themselves based on appearance/race?
It seems to be the case in closed environments like schools and prisons.
>>7713639
segregation into groups of people like yourself is natural
if you had the choice to be trapped in a room with either a complete stranger or an anon from /sci/ i think most people would choose the random stranger from /sci/ - at least you have one thing in common, you might have other things or be similar to that person.
people of the same race is the most apparent similarity there is - these people look similar to you
>>7713647
> complete stranger or an anon from /sci/ i think most people would choose the random stranger from /sci/
I'd stay the hell away from the anon from /sci/ desu
>>7713650
ugh ok fine lemme use a different analogy
would you rather be trapped in an elevator with a random person from your university or a random 46 year old man from pakistan
Does sleeping on your back give you nightmares? There was a thread on robotland I was lurking, and everyone there said that they had weird, scary dreams while sleeping on their backs, and this was not the case when sleeping on their sides. I get nice, pleasant dreams and a full sleep when I sleep on my back.
So, is this the result of blood rushing to certain parts of your brain due to position you are sleeping in? Is that even possible? So, if you make babies sleep one way only (they move, obviously, but you still can make them lay down in a different position initially) will different parts of the brain, that are better simulated by blood develop differently? Will this be the same for adults? Is cranial volume a big factor in this, or is the size of your brain (because brains shrink as you age/don't use them)? What is the possibility of such recurring phonomenon (weird dreams while sleeping on back) being integrated in neural circuits after a certain period of time and set repetitions?
All of this assuming the person is healthy, does not have any breathing problems in any position while sleeping and mentally sound.
Ideal position is upside down in fetal position. Its how you developed in the womb so naturally it should be the best position to maintain for periods of sleep & development. (Most blood will go to the brain)
The right question to ask:
How do we fall asleep in an upside down fetal position comfortably?
That right, we build liquidy tanks where we can either breath the liquid/gel or we reattach a synthetic limbal corb to deliver oxygen.
>>7713622
you turn upside down when you are in the womb and about to be birthed. so the ideal position wouldn't be upside down.
>>7713622
Your spine is underdeveloped in the womb, you'll only end up with back pain trying to sleep in a fetal position, you'll have to remove the spine to get true comfort in the tank
If time travel is possible with relativity, what if we put a massive database far out in space away from earth's gravity or its revolution, and decelerated it as much as possible to where its almost stationary in space (possibly beyond our solar system) then we would be able to connect to it and view files from the future.
By doing so wouldn't we be able to transport data from the future through time? We put the server in a time irrelevant to earth and then upload all our knowledge to it and promise to do so for the next 100 years, then we would be able to connect to it and view uploads before they were uploaded.
Thought inspired by other anon thread:
>>7712647
Very true. I remember one of Einsteins colleague and rival. Believed that in order to time travel one does not need to accelerate over the speed of light. We do that with motion, if relativity is respected. But one would have to be still as possible. Everything vibrates. so that is near impossible.
>>7713467
Like in the movie interstellar where a few minutes on the water planet are hours on earth, a few minutes in the location of the server would be years on earth, but instead of traveling physically, we would transmit data through other means.
>>7713446
Why not creating bigass mirror in the space then look with telescope?
we can see the past !
Galaxies just don't spiral and move like they do unless either you add in a shitload of uncounted mass or seriously fuck with the equations for gravity.
Most scientists decided there was 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' which is matter and energy that we cant see and only interacts with other matter gravitationally.
Kardashev scale is a proposed mechanism to measure the development of a technological civilization. A type two people will capture the entire energy output of there star. Now what would this look like to an external observer? You would have the mass of a star still pulling on the bodies around it but you would not see anything.
What if the universe is teaming with intelligent life and we just don't understand what we are looking at.
>>7713401
Shouldn't we be able to detect those by the waste heat?
>>7713403
>implying advanced civilizations would waste heat
not with the heat death approaching, son.
>>7713403
>entire energy output of there star
>waist heat
Pick one.
I'm going to do medicine next year, what do I study in the holidays?

Can anyone point me to the science behind this stuff? Papers on the process to make it/general ideas behind it. It seems super interesting.
not really sure what you're looking for specifically
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S004313540300410X
Above is a fairly typical example of what LID research looks like
>>7713132
It's got holes.
>>7713143
>http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S004313540300410X
This looks fantastic, except it costs 36$. Is it possible you could point me to a resource that doesn't have a paywall (a tall order I know, I apologize).
>CSI rolls in
>Oh look, a cigarette.
>Get Dave to run PCR on the isolated DNA.
My question:
Why does DNA have to be amplified for the suspect to be caught?
I am confused because this is the way I see it: I have 1 bar of chocolate and I tell the chocolatier to melt it down and make me 10 bars of chocolate so I can see what it is.
>>7712949
I take it you don't know much about how PCR works. Is this correct?
You need enough DNA to be able to see it on a gel. That's usually exponentially more than you'd find laying around.
>>7712949
well, with one egg I can fry it
with 3 I can fry, hardboil, and poach
Ive posted this for the past week straight and still no replies.
what does /sci/ think about a micro-biology major?
and what about bio-physics?
is it REAL science, and perhaps even BIG science?
>>7712918
>what does /sci/ think about a micro-biology major?
If you want advice regarding college/university or your career path, go to /adv/.
>>7712927
Im asking what do you guys think about the field of study, fuck the major what do you think about it as a science, is it respectable?
>>7712918
Dont let sci dictate your opinion on science or major.
Microbiology is good and its a good major.
It is "real" science or whatever that means. Its applications are one of the most useful and its on a new frontier of discovery.
Micro-biology needs good chemistry knowledge tho so dont skip out on those.
Im not sure about biophysics but certainly its applications are equally important, as the field of biotechnology is growing and seems like the way to go.
Is 29 too old to begin a career as an electrical engineer?
no
No, that's actually about the right time.
No, unless you don't have an EE degree from an accredited institution.
Why do mechanics courses still use vectors to represent angular quantities when bivectors are clearly superior?
>>7712580
most mechanics courses are taught to baby physics majors who have only single variable calc under their belts.
>>7712630
wut?
physics majors don't take mechanics until their junior/senior year and they take multivariable calc their 1st or 2nd year....
>>7712630
It isn't that hard to teach some basic geometric algebra.
>Life is a computer simulation

I want to try it too.
> Logic is relative
Is /sci/ a bad enough dude to unblock this shitter?
I don't get it. What is this?
I tried, but it already goes to fractions at the 20/21 tile of the top left corner, and to be honest I don't believ in fractions so this is not solveable.
ez 33 cm
It works! http://news.sciencemag.org/physics/2015/10/feature-bizarre-reactor-might-save-nuclear-fusion
>>7712420
It is good news, but please don't overhype this. We are still a long way from proving stellarators are definitely more advantageous than tokamaks to produce fusion power. As a physicsfag (and a european), I'm glad to see a frontier science experiment getting so much coverage though. Let's just not get excited too early.
it's nice that its getting exposure, but ionly a matter of time until /sci/ starts shitting on stellarators in favor of FRCs, not like /sci/ really understands either. it will be just like when /sci/ hyped the fuck out of the shitty general fusion design, or ITER before that.
stellarators are based tho, and behind FRCs are one of the best methods of fusion power production
this is the shit and nothing less
