Shinobi Quest #57

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

You lean back, getting comfortable on your puppet throne; honestly, it isn’t *that* uncomfortable.

Slowly, you begin to ascend- thankfully there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of wind here, so any potential hazards during your flight can be ruled out. Briefly, you imagine making such a ascent back home, but shuddering and sinking lower in your seat. Whipping winds, variable temperatures, high speeds- flight back home has a lot of variables to consider.

Your new seat *does* offer you a rather unique view of this inverted world; despite it’s odd sloping shape and impossible geometry, it’s quite beautiful- especially from on high.

Your wide smile fades into a mischievous grin. These Otsutsuki- they sealed Kaguya away for being a goddess, but proceeded to build themselves a miniature world where they can look down upon the world below… not unlike gods themselves?

People have such amazing capacity for hypocrisy, truly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

A short time later, your throne drifts to a stop outside the large temple complex you had seen from below. Up close, you can see it’s grand stone facade, carved into the floating mountain that houses it. Interlocking arches lines the entrance, and above, a large stature of a horned man gazes outward, grim-faced and promising judgement to the masses below.

You still can’t help but smile.

An entire army of Toneri’s constructs line the pathway to entrance, all bowing deeply.

This is a showing of respect you can get used to~

Welcome, Tsuki Norihime, to the Temple of Hamura.” Toneri’s voice echos from his puppets.

“Happy to be here, I suppose- do you have the refreshments I was promised?” You retort, still sporting a coy grin.

“Er- yes, of course. Please, follow the guide inside the temple. I await you in the dining area.” He responds.

“Very good- lead the way, then.” You say, tilting your head towards a new arrival- a puppet like the others, but dressed in white, ceremonial robes.

The construct beckons you forth, and you follow it a few paces back as it leads you into the temple proper.

You’re lead through a sprawling opening hall, decorated with spiritual ornamentation and decorations. Depictions of the horned man, who you assume to be Hamura, are nearly everywhere; accompanying them are smaller depictions of what you assume to be lesser historical events for these people, dating back across their history. Despite nearly a thousand years to themselves, this is all they left behind? The thought baffles you, especially when framed in the context of your own world’s history.

In a thousand years, warring daimyo and their vassals cut out swathes of the land that would eventually become the Great Nations; from this vessel, the Shinobi villages were born. Each daimyo can track his lineage to the origin of his family line, and there are tales upon tales from those times. In contrast, these folk seemed to be inordinately focused on one point in their past- the accomplishments of their great ancestor.

Hamura- likely Hamura Otsutsuki, one of Kaguya’s two children.

It’s not a small leap of logic to make, although it carries implications. If these moon folk are all descended from him directly, as seems likely, it’s quite the pedigree- even if you care little for their reputation, they are descended from divinity, even if that divinity was stolen.

In your thoughts, you had stopped paying direct attention to your surroundings- and you nearly run into the stopped puppet as a result. It, like it’s brothers, is now bowing, it’s arm outstretched to hold open a door.

Inside, a large window dominates the far wall- the view of the world below, and the castle floating across from the temple, is breathtaking.

“It is quite beautiful, isn’t it? I’m afraid I haven’t seen it myself since I was a young boy.” a soft voice says from across the room.

A small boy, no taller than yourself, sits at the end of a long table. The table itself is immaculately set with fine silver tableware and snow white table linens. The boy’s hair is a stark white, his delicate features obscured slightly by a dark veil. Across his collarbone are several black magatama, seemingly written into his pale flesh.

“I welcome you to my home. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me- I apologize for my earlier rudeness.” He says, rising from his chair.

You feel your face warm, slightly- he’s rather pretty, for a boy. Sakura and Ino would likely be foaming at the mouth over his looks. But where did the malleable kid from before vanish to?

There is a 10 minute waiting period to count up votes. As always, you can choose more than one option. I will try to be fair and accommodating. Combat mechanics might be subject to change, but I will almost always have you roll a 1d100 unless more than one move is being used. I'll also probably have you roll for tough choices on how well they go.

Critiques, criticisms, and helpful suggestions are always great!

"Hey, at least I won't stop contacting you after I go out on my journey. I'm not like him."
She seems a little taken aback. "That... That's true."
"What was he like?" You're actually curious. All you've felt towards him was anger. He left right around the time your mother's father died. He's about ten years older than your mother, and his parents had died about seven years before he decided to leave. You don't remember anything, but your mother insists she keeps the photo albums with him in them.
Andy thinks for a moment. "He.. He was fun." She pauses, assessing your face, which looks indifferent. "He always played with me outside. He took me to the park a lot. But he was also gone a lot... I thought he was always busy working, but sometimes I'd hear mom yelling at him to stop "foolishly believing you can change anything the planet does". I never knew what that meant. I guess he was a protester or something." She shrugs. "Maybe he got involved in something bad. Maybe he left to save us."

Trees towered around you, gentle rays of sunlight filtering through the leaves with the sole purpose of searing into your eyes and make you miserable.

You are Irue Valen, and you find it a little unsettling that it took a concentrated effort to remember that you hadn't just fallen asleep normally. While everything around you certainly resembled a forest, your last memories were of waving to Priat as you stepped beyond a veil; What came next was little more than a blur of sinking through viscous nothing. If you hadn't already grown accustomed to losing your senses, the transition likely would have made you panic... But as it stood, you could make out the tell-tale signs of your ability to perceive the world being reconfigured.

"You picked a strange place to take a nap! That's so like you, though."

Y̶̵̨o͝͞u̸̴̷̴ ̢҉̀͘͢k̕͝n͡e̛͡҉͜͏w̢̡ ̴̨҉͏͞t̷̀҉h̴̶̨͢͡i͡͏̀͏s̵̷͘͞͡ ̕͢͏҉̷p̴͘͏̡e̢̢͏͟ŗ̷̛̀̀s͏͟ǫ͜ǹ̶̕͠҉.̷́͞͞ ̸͢͡҉̡T̴͝h̢͞҉͟e̶̵̵̵i̷͞ŗ̴͢ ̸̨n̴͜͞͠҉a̕m̷̧͠ę̨̨ ̸́w̷͢͝á͟͢s̸͘͞.̵͡.͘͟.̴͜͠͞

A jolt of pain wracked your head, forcing your eyes closed in response. You could barely glimpse the form of the voice's owner distort as you winced away. That was a lie. You had never heard this voice before, and you had no idea who that was.

"You picked a strange place to take a nap, stranger!"

When you opened your eyes again, a slightly revised greeting met your ears. Said as naturally as the first had been, as its owner stood above you in... Strange clothes. They looked casual and worn, meant for manual labor, but something stood out about them. Minor changes from what you were used to seeing... And his dialect was starting to grate on you.

"You don't look like you're from around here... Are you lost?" You weren't the only one performing an inspection, it seemed. You blinked up at him, an answer beginning to form on your lips when he snapped his fingers abruptly. "Oh!"

"...I'm sorry?"
"No, pardon me! I didn't catch your eyes the first time. You're with the Valen family, aren't you?"

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics involve three rolls of 1d100, taking the best, and using the base accuracy and crit ranges of the game, roughly, but the 'turn order' will be more like the anime, where sometimes you can do a few moves in a row or be hit by a combo of moves yourself, all depending on circumstances. Stronger moves tend to take more time and have more cooldown than weaker moves, so beware of that timing. Speed is more important for closing ground, intercepting, and other things and doesn't necessarily mean going first.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture, mostly likely a butt.

You have an idea - grab one of the traitors with your grapple!

The casing on your arm slides away, and the launcher springs into position. This will be the first time you've used it - you hope it works well.

You brace your arm on the table, anchoring yourself behind it. You sight the bastard who brought down Brete, and aim for him.

The hook flies from your arm, stabbing itself into his arm. He screams, and the servos in your arm whir, dragging him across the battlefield to you. Stunned, he lies there with you until you pump two stun shots into him.

A lone Eyegore drifts in silence as it orbits an unnamed world in a distant system. The world below it was lush with vegetation and teeming with game. The Reconstructed satellite could detect no native intelligent species, the planet a pristine environment nearly untouched by civilized hands. Below it the living fight, breed, and die in the most basic of all struggles that every living being experiences, the struggle for survival. Large megafauna stride across flat grassy plains or graze on colossal trees, the oceans hiding creatures that rise up and breach the surface in either joy or desperation, even the snowy peaks of mountain ranges home to cannibalistic flying animals.

Yet the planet was not completely devoid of colonists, unwilling as they are. Small huts cluster in the boughs of the massive trees built from branches and plantlife crudely woven together. Beings flit from hut to hut or descend to the rivers and lakes in attempts to fish and hunt using spears held in their zygodactyl feet, feathered wings allowing the slender creatures to fly gracefully through the air. The huts were painted with colorful mud and sap, crude decorations revolving around the Sun and Stars, effigies of their lost kin and gods.

This planet was home to more than just the Flier Sunscale that the Armada's Blackscale Cabal had deposited on the world. Generations of the Sunscale caste seemed to have lived on the world, the greenscaled and winged lizardfolk living in peace and harmony with their alien home. The Eyegore watched as the nervous new arrivals were greeted joyfully by their distant cousins and as time passed saw them grow to accept their new home even as they looked up at the skies at night as if hoping to see the Mother or the Father.

The Eyegore took a pleasure in observing the simple lizardfolk, a caste that seemed unfitting for the warlike Sunscale, living their lives as best they could without the help of their smarter and stronger kin. Yet when flying predators swooped in low the colony gathered together, shrieking and harassing the attackers with claws, fangs, nets and spears until they were driven off showing they were not completely defenseless on this primal world.

You wonder just how long this world has been used as a dumping ground for the Blackscale Cabals to deposit the Fliers, the only caste of their orthodox kin they refused to harm or reanimate. Among their small villages scattered around the dense jungles and forests the Eyegore could detect the remains of engines of indeterminate purpose, their hulks rusted and fallen to disrepair, and see Fliers using manufactured tools that fit their unique handfeet perfectly. Despite the casual cruelty and sadism of the Blackscale it was quite apparent they still seemed to care about the Flier caste.

You are Q'ruk Vesaeti, former Imperial Guardsman of the Legions of Ure, now devout Slaaneshi and second-in-command of the Gilded Touch. You've spent the last month training twenty men to fighting standard in a hellish training regiment, only ten men survived but they've reached Imperial Guard standard. Recently, Slaanesh has blessed you with a pair of horns, and you participated in an enormous party, during which you goaded the cultists into forming an Orgy Pyramid in the shape of the holy symbols of Slaanesh, pounded a farmer's daughter's orifices to the point she became bruised, gorged yourself on delicacies, glutted yourself with fine wines and liquors, and regaled many cultists with exaggerated and sometimes outright fabricated tales of your exploits in the Legions of Ure.

You've just woken up, and the sun is almost halfway finished with its daily cycle. You've got a momentous hangover and everything feels a little bit fuzzy. You and the High Enforcers are going to begin training the next wave of recruits tomorrow, as Zamiel Cudan decided the Slaaneshi could use a day to rest and recover from yesterday's event. You don't have anything planned in particular, but you've got almost an entire day ahead of you.

You yawn, your holotransciever beeping its alarm, it was time to wake up but you don't want to, its so warm and heavy under these blankets. So heavy... really heavy actually, too heavy.

You blink your eyes open, staring at all six of your pokemon sprawled over your bed, Piper snoring as Koshmar turns in his sleep.

Well that explains the weight... though how can the ghosts be so heavy, aren't they immaterial.

Oh well, thats what you get for never checking your pokedex. You squirm your way out of bed, being careful not to disrupt the slumbering army on your bedside.

It's a new day and, while Mimikyu has shown he had a lot more then you thought him capable of, it made you wonder what special talents your other pokemon have that you may not have noticed.

You got our first badge so things are only going to get harder from here.

It's time for some special training!

>Call Alder, he knows how to train well right
>Ask Mrs Nyarth downstairs to help you, she did win the pokemon showcase a few decades back she must know what she's doing... right?
>Carl might now something... maybe.
>You recall Julie knowing a few things, maybe she can help?
>Screw that, you are going to have quality alone time with your pokemon! All six of them.

You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, a shinigami who just can't seem to stop stumbling on new and disturbing problems.

The Soul Society is expanding? That's not the answer you expected, but it does make a certain amount of sense given what you know about what happened with Hell. Specifically, it reminds you of Kaoru's description of it: of Hell having been “pushed” rather than “pulled”. If other planes are expanding as well, or else interacting with one another due to what's happening in the Soul Society, it makes sense that not only would there eventually be sporadic cases of Hell crossing over with other planes but all of the planes crossing over with each other. This must have just happened to be the first time you've caught it.

You exchange a worried glance with Yoruichi. “We... shouldn't let anyone see that just yet.”

“I gotta make a call,” she sighs, quietly casting Kakushitsuijaku and kneeling with her palm placed flat on the ground. You're only privy to her half of the conversation, but you can more or less fill in the gaps with your imagination.

“So you're sure about this?”

“Can you produce a summary statement? Easy to digest, as little technical nonsense as you can get away with?”

“Okay, I get it.”

“Well, can you do anything to fix it in the next twelve hours?”

“So it does us no good to release the information now, and before you say it yes, I know I'm suggesting we sit on crucial information. But all of our Captains need a break, and right now they're getting it. So let Shunsui and the Central 46 know after you've taken some time to mull over the details and write a full report.”

“Hey, come on now. There's a reason you trust me with these sorts of decisions. Have I ever led you wrong?”

“That time didn't count.”

Yoruichi frowns. “Neither did that one.”

“... what was that? You're breaking up. I... I can't... hello? Hello? Are... Kisuke?”

Then she abruptly releases the spell. “If he asks we were going through a tunnel or something.”

“That's how I remember it,” you shrug. “Let's try and put on a show of calm, right?”

“We're Captains, acting is in our job description,” Yoruichi agrees.

The universe is slowly ending, and yet when you return to the beach you'd be forgiven for thinking that nothing had happened. Halibel watches in quiet amusement as Neliel starts trying to make her own sandcastle next to Menoly and Lilynette... much more solidly-built, but really little more than a squared-off tower. It seems like she can't figure out what to do with it next, while its neighbor has evolved into a sprawling pile of crooked towers and crisscrossing walls. It's almost like none of the builders has ever actually seen a castle before.

Of course you can't help but spare Shunsui a glance. He seems to actually be having a good time, and after the emotional roller coaster he's been on for the last few weeks you figure he deserves it more than most. The death of his mentor, the loss of his closest friend, his rise to the position of Head Captain, the revelation that his former Lieutenant Lisa was alive and well... he's had precious little to be happy about, but plenty of work to distract himself with. And come tomorrow he'll have one more thing on his plate.

Would you want to know? Would you rather be surprised with news this bad, or would you rather have a few hours to come to terms?

Shunsui finishes telling Starrk a joke and turns laughing to face you, even as Nanao rests her face in her palm in disbelief at the punchline. He notices that your eyes have lingered just a little too long, and his brow furrows at you in silent curiosity.

>Let him know that Kisuke will have something to report tomorrow, suggest he take the day to relax.
>Tell him, quietly of course, what Kisuke has suggested is going on. He should be warned.
>Tell him it's nothing. He'll find out when everyone else does.
>Other?

Well, I know I promised a fantasy themed quest after Infinite Stars, but I was in a bit of a Titanfall mood so I decided we'd run a short little quest delving into that!

But first things first, what faction do you want to side with? The Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation, which is trying to enforce its resource rights on the rebellious Frontier, or the Militia, a ragtag army of settlers fighting to protect their homes from the IMC's iron grip?

Eileen, how could I possibly hate you?

In a time of global conflict, the elite international task force Overwatch formed. Soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities: together, they ended the Omnic Crisis and restored peace to a war-torn world. For a generation, the heroes of Overwatch protected the world, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery.

After many years, Overwatch became troubled, and finally disbanded. Without them, world conflict and terror rose again. Governments weakened by strife ceded power to mega-corporations and private security forces. Some omnics returned to war with humans, while others remained peaceful but faced fear and violence. Overwatch was gone…but the world still needed heroes.

You are a young man who's been many things: adventurer, treasure hunter, freedom fighter, and international criminal. Recently you encountered the re-formed Overwatch: a grand title for two ex-agents, Winston and Tracer, operating as outlaws out of an abandoned Watchpoint. Despite their down-and-out-status, or perhaps because of it, you were inspired to join them. You left your old life behind to become the first recruit of the new Overwatch.

Now you and Tracer are travelling the globe, defending the people of the world from harm and searching for potential agents to rebuild Overwatch. The world needs heroes. Maybe you can be one of them.

Previously on Overwatch Quest:

The team succesfully defended the Watchpoint from Talon's assault forces. You distinguished yourself by taking out Reaper and his squad alone, and with style. The team was impressed by your personal exploits. Your defense strategy was good, if not perfect: the base took some damage from breach charges and exploding fuel tanks, but all agents emerged more or less unscathed.

Soon you were ready to head out on your next mission, which you had decided would be the first time the team split up. Tracer and Reinhardt would take the Aurora to Antarctica, to investigate a mysterious signal from an abandoned scientific outpost. Meanwhile, Mercy, McCree, and yourself would take civilian transport to Japan, to investigate Genji's disappearance and the plans of the Shimada clan.

Before Tracer leaves, you tell her ...

>This could be a Talon trap. Stay focused out there.
>This could be something valuable. Do what it takes.
>Good luck, Tracer.
>Good luck, Lena.
>When we get back, my new suit will be ready. How about a race?
