Hello all.

I like the way film looks in comparison to the way digital photos look. I would like to buy a decent SLR. However, I know nothing about film, cameras, lenses, or brands.

Can you guys help me out please? I don't want to use disposable cameras.

- Removable lenses
- SLR
- Not too expensive
- Good quality
- Reliable
- Things to watch out for, things to know.
- Film, what to know, where to buy.

Okay, thanks for any information you can give me, /p.

I like olympus slr's because theyre small and the lenses are great for nice price. But i recommend just looking for a camera in a thrift store.

Cheaper option: Apply software filter to your digital photo in post.

Film looks without all the expenses.
>>
Old mechanical SLRs aren't differentiated in the way modern cameras are. Pentax, Mamiya, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Minolta and even cheap shit like Chinon and Praktica are all pretty much the same and the 50mm 1.7~2 kit lenses are all great. The electronic ones (aside from a basic meter) are more differentiated but also generally lower quality and more likely to be broken.

ITT: Cine film

Anyone uses Cinestill, or Vision 2/3?

Anyone washes their own Vision film for shots? Before or after? ...Ive used some pre washed V3 (water+baking soda), looked like shit. Then shot V3 washed post-shot, and it looked decent when scanned, but still too yellow greenish, too lomoish.

Any other method besides water+baking soda wash for the remjet?

Pic is from somewhere else. Cinestill 800 i think.

>1. When pouring your chemistry back into your containers, please use a coffee filter in your funnel to capture any "rem jet" waste. This will keep your chemistry clean for re-use!

>2. After your Blix, rinse your film in a half bucket of hot water (80 - 102 degrees F) with a few table spoons of Baking Soda. With your thumb, gently rub the non-emulsion side of your film as you remove it from your film reel. Careful not to scratch the emulsion of your film. Final rinse under running water before submerging your film into the two-minute Stabilizer. You will see the black rem jet in your water as you rinse.

that or just shoot cinestill, not that much more expensive. or just be a normal person and shoot ektar or portra, they use vision 3 technology so don't vary much apart from color balance/speed
>>
>>2759456
>or just be a normal person and shoot ektar or portra

i dont wanna be normal. i have a brand new 400ft metal canister full of V2 200T waiting to be shot.
>>
>>2759453
I use Cinestill 50D. It's currently my favorite general-purpose color neg film, but the slow speed is a bitch when I'm not outside. I wish they spooled 250D into canisters too, I would buy that in a heartbeat. 800T has horrible, ugly grain that I can't get into.

I would never even consider removing the rem-jet layer myself.

OP, have you ever shot any Vision 2383? It's really slow but it doesn't have a remjet layer. Seems like it would be interesting.

Canon - PowerShot ELPH 160

20.0-Megapixel camera that's good on your budget. You can then get a good memory card and a case for it
Nikon - Coolpix L840

A camera right on your budget with some wiggle room to get accessories. This camera is able to compete with most professional MFT cameras that cost 4 times as much. (pricier alternative Canon - PowerShot SX530)
>>
>>2762865
In addition: Nikon - Coolpix S9900

Comparable to the Ricoh GR which costs three times as much. This comes with a tilt/flip screen and preforms amazing under low light. Good manual controls and very pocketable for it's 30x zoom range.

Always look for second hand, take a friend with you who knows cameras. Ask for a recent unedited photo of any prospective SLR to get an idea of shutter count (you can upload this photo online; there are free tools to work it out).

I got my first D70 and 50 1.8 for $200AUD $150ish USD second hand. There was some haggling but I always loved that camera.

Personally I would prefer a 10 year old SLR to most modern point and shoots. I prefer the ergonomics (and now I have plenty of glass for 'em too). Check around and see! And don't forget, many people on classifieds ads are desperate, especially if the gear is a little older! Don't be afraid to haggle.

Lets talk Snow!

Ive seen lots of bickering back and forth about which tones snow should be and how you should post processing on it.

lets share experiences and techniques. I can provide some raw files, but theyre only olympus and shot through a train window, so if anyone want to share some of theirs, feel free.

So I got a box of cameras from someones attic. Crap mostly. I was hopeful for the Kodamatic, and it DOES work, but the film expired in '85 and is practically useless. The Canonet seems like a good camera in general but the shutter and the aperature blades are completely stuck. The rest is some agfa stuff either not working or using 126 film. So the only camera that actually (mostly) works is a Porst FX 4 with a Meyer Görlitz Domiplan 50mm f2.8. I'm kinda disappointed because I'd been waiting for that particular box for months and now it's really not of much use/beyond repair/LQ.

I'll post some test shots I did with the Porst on HP5 anyway. Maybe I can at least kill a gearfag thread with this and all of my anticipation will not have been for naught.

Just saw it, never mind.

Guys I have to decide what camera to buy from this two models of choice.

They both are excellent to me but I can't really decide...I'd buy the Sammy but it uses only NX lenses, on other hand the Panasonic has much much more choice.

Destination of use: stills photos, animals and landscapes, also videos at amateur level (nothing serious).

I'm thinking about getting a scanner so I can.. scan (obviously) negatives.
I'm on a bit of a tight budget, and I'm wondering what in specific I should look for. Will a regular old scanner do the job?
How about printing?

>Will a regular old scanner do the job?
No, not for negatives. You need one with a light in the lid that will shine through the negative to the scanner sensor.

If you're on a budget, check out a V500 for medium format, or a Plustek 8100 for 35mm.
>>
>>2761386
Brilliant, thank you!
I should have said it is 35mm I'd be scanning in the original post.
>>
>>2761386
Is there any reason to get a V500 over a V550? I notice that the V500 seems to be discontinued and costs more than the V550, which I could go get from Fry's right now if I wanted to.

the flowers are a little too bright, but it's not too awful as far as hdr goes.

I bet it would sell a lot of prints though.
>>
>>2761118
It ain't bad, the colours are a bit too intense I think but hey, some people like that, and there is some weird "haze" over the trees caused by the HDR process
But I really think that an HDR would be the way to go to take this picture on a mid-range DSLR

Looking for advice on a broadcast camcorder.

I have a reasonable budget to choose cameras for my college's new studio. The studio will be used for talking-head interviews, and smalltime broadcast style news done by students. This will include green screen work.

what's a good broadcast camera i can get around $5,000? I'm interested in the Sony pxw-x180, but after using the HXR-NX5 for the last couple of years, 3X 1/3" sensors just don't seem good enough. Maybe they have improved since then though?

The "cinema" cameras don't do me any good because they don't have servo zoom, proper outputs (SDI) and other features needed for broadcast.

The recording format or cards don't matter as much as what kind of output because it will be going into a video switcher and recorder externally or streamed on the internet.
>>
>>2741193
For around 5k? You could go all out and get the Panasonic dvx200, has a 4/3 sensor, wile most others still use iPhone or point-and-shit sized sensors
>>
>>2741205
Just looked it up, not a bad camera. The 3G-SDI and 4K option are great pluses in my book.
Only negative thing I heard is that people are having issues with color grading on it.

So I just bought an a7s to shoot videos, I always used my cheap t2i and good prime lenses, never felt the need of a better camera for videos until the last year, had the money and decided to do the next step. I'm a noob with this new stuff so pls don't kill me.

I was fucking around with picture profiles to see how they looked and pp4 seems to behave in a different way than the others. Even with the smallest amount of overexposure, colors become really weird. They kinda shift to a brighter/washed out version, some just become white but others seem to stay there and not give a fuck until I overexpose a lot more. It's this ITU709 that make it behave this way.

I knew about the usual greysh tint of s-log, cine and that most picture profiles look "bad" straight out of the camera, because they're only used to give you more details to work with in post. All the other pp behave as I expected, the usual low contrast look.

Am I just freaking out because my t2i was so shitty compared to this one that when overexposing it would just make everything white without even trying to save some information, or is my a7s having some problems? Holy fuck I feel retarded to ask you people this stuff.
21 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Ok I just checked the actual files on my computer monitor and they don't look "weird", it seems like the monitor/viewfinder of the camera made them look a lot more saturated/vivid.
It happens when I select "ITU709". I don't know what the fuck i'm doing, yeah
>>
>>2762040
Learn to do your color grading in post first.

Plus simply do not use the profiles that don't work for you, if you don't need to.

> is my a7s having some problems
How would we know, we can't even see samples. But rather than making us do the work, how about you compare your stuff yourself to gazillions of pieces of published materials from other A7S & find out.
>>
>>2762046
The problem is this happens only on camera. It's ok on my computer monitor.

I may have been a bit too modest in my post, I know how to use raw files and I always do my color grading, the color just seem really fucked up only on my a7s.
