Let's have a self portrait thread.
Took this one a couple months back and I think it turned out quite good.

I'm a total noob to photography, but I can't stop looking at charlotte wales' photoshoots for area prefall '16. How'd she do it friends? Is it the lighting, the editing? Please suggest what kind of techniques and gear she might have used. Thanks

editing - a lot of wankery

Is /p/ the only community on the internet that uses the term 'snapshit'
I can't find any other trace of it.
I don't even know if this concept exists outside of /p/. It indicates an incredible cynicism and bitter outlook
Yeah, snapshit is ours. Gearfag is too.
>>2768509
Snapshot=snapshit
It's kinda like hearing a really, really religious person saying "Gosh" or "shoot". They mean the exact same thing as saying "fuck" or "shit", but they don't use those naughty words.
>>2768516
adding fag as a suffix is a common 4chanism though
snapshit is an entirely unique creation
How does one take photos like this one for example? I really wanna know, I love the way they look.
>>2768045
shoot like sub f/5.6, miss focus a tad so everything's a bit softer, apply vsco. if you do not have vsco, the general tech for something like this is
crushed and lifted blacks, lowered whites, lowered clarity slider to idk -5, split tone in magenta or purple to shadows, cyan to highlights, toy with the rgb sliders in camera calibration for false-colour that film has
>>2768046
thanks for the info anon, i appriciate it.
i have one more question, i just saw this pic and came right in here and i do not have any knowledge of photography.
you're saying that i should shoot this like sub f/5.6 and apply vsco and that's pretty much it?
is there any way to do shots like this digitally? (like in a cheaper way, smartphones more like)
what do you mean by "miss focus a tad"?
>>2768053
yeah vsco is for editing digital photos
last i saw smartphones don't have controllable apertures, you'll need a camera with an interchangeable lens
i mean get it in focus, and then turn the lens a bit so it's focused closer or farther than the subject. could just apply a blur to the whole thing in post though, that might be the better option.
Newbie here!
I've been looking up vidoes and guides on photography for the past 3 months now, from starters videos to experts and also concept theories. I think it's finally time to do some practical and buy my equipment now :)
What I've got in mind is a Canon EOS 750d. I am a student who hasn't got that much money on their hands. My budget is around £400 MAX though I'm trying to spend around £350.
Any tips to what I should get and how I could possibly get things for cheaper? I'm fine with 2nd hand equipment as long as it's trustworthy and not too crap.
Nikon D3300 is a very good choice as far as i can see.
Also.

I found this at my dad's old house. Its the same as pic related (konica s hexanon). I always loved to take pictures with a cool story behind, but i find it mesmerising doing it with my phone. Will this camera work? Will it take decent pictures? I don't know nothing about photography, nor cameras.

The Konica Auto S series are nice cameras with great lenses. If it works it will make nice pictures.
Look up a video on rangefinder cameras or something and how exposure works.
If the lightmeter still works this camera has shutter priority so that makes things easier for a beginner since you only have to think about 1 parameter, shutter speed.
Set the lens to 'auto', wind the film lever and press the shutter button. If you hear and see the shutter fire the camera is probably fine.
Look through the finder and move the focussing tab on the lens. If a square in the middle moves the rangefinder mechanism is probably ok.

inspect lens for dust and fungus. clean out dust from inside of it or you'll get spots on your photos.
i'm sure there are lists of general things to do to spruce up an old camera and get it ready for taking photos.
if you've got allergies you'll need to take precautions, i've fucked my own shit so hard by not taking a claritin before diving into some cameras.
Thanks guys for the encouragment. It was a little bit dusty, but nothing more. Im going to a photo store to buy a roll.

Going to a wetlands reserve with hopefully lot of pic related
What can i quickly read to get an idea of tips for composition/etc?
The technical details of exposure/etc I have down.

So the rule of 3rds doesn't apply to birds as much then? because normally you'd try to shoot your subject on the left 1/3rd or right 1/3rd position, right?
>>2768286
>focus on the eyes
Sounds pretty hard for a moving one (i don't hope to get that on this first time) but i'll try that for stationary, thanks.
I just have an entry level dSLR and lenses. If i can't get any decent bird pictures I'll still have some nice landscape/waterscape[if that's a word] photos, some more experience, get some time outdoors, and get some photos /p/ can tear apart about how bad they are

Hi, fairly new to this board.
I'm wondering if someone can tell me how to take photographs like this, the camera and film to buy and how to get them processed into a digital photo etc.
The poster said 35MM film or something but I'm still fairly clueless, dumping a few pics and any help is appreciated.
Macro general thread.
C&C welcome, feel free to just post shit though.

Get in here and discuss (maybe even share) some photobooks.
I just picked up Glass House by Margaret Morton. Cool shit, beautiful lighting all the way through, perfect way to photograph the homeless without being a dick. Would recommend.
The most interesting one I've picked up recently, providing you with an inside look into the golden age of photojournalism.
Heavy enough to use it as a weapon itself.
If you are into uncompromising journalism you should definitely check it out.
In case you want to feel very sad for quite a long time. Especially touching if you lost your father or have a troublesome relationship.
Can we have a /p/rotip general?
I notice that almost all pics posted here by beginners have uncalibrated colour spaces.
This should be the first thing people do when they edit and export their photos via Photoshop, Gimp or what ever editing software you work it.
In Photoshop go to; Edit -> Color Settings
From there, you should convert or set your working colour profile to sRGB for posting shit on the internet (as most people don't have access to 10bit monitors).
Also this is the default colour space for 99% of consumer printers. Change it to sRGB unless you specifically need greater colour information.
>>2765991
Noob here. What difference does it make?
>>2766087
Color depth, the Internet has limited amount of color range that can produced. The Internet runs on sRGB and wouldnt be able to replicate the richer color scheme of Adobe RGB; which would lead inaccurate colors in photos
