It's official. The SLR is dead! Long Live Mirrorless!

Why are you hanging on to your inferior, ancient SLR?

What phone is best for photography? I'm going to replace my current phone today because it's absolutely terrible and cost the same as an iPhone. I'm hoping to an exchange for another phone at no extra cost so may be looking at last year's models. I'm torn between an iPhone and Sony Xperia Z4. I had an iPhone 4S that had a pretty good camera but the browser reloading webpages when you switched between tabs drove me absolutely crazy. The lack of expandable memory is also a major drawback to me. This is why I'd prefer to stick with Android and the Z4 looks appealing. I'm in Japan so that may limit some choices.

What are /p/'s thoughts?

True about the memory thing. I actually have yet to hit the 32gb on my current phone. But that may be partially due to how awful the camera is.

Your photos actually have made me reconsider Apple again. Still, the idea of the reloading browser pages and necessary reinstallation of iTunes is less than appealling.

What iPhone do you have? I imagine I'd be looking at the 6S in terms of exchanging at no cost.

Yeah 6s. But dont base your purchase on the bias view of some dipshit on an arabian caligraphy appreciation forum.
If you'll be more happy not dealing with apple and with the Z4, then just get that.

What camera backpack is the best? I don't really have a lot of gear right now, just a DSLR, a 35mm prime and 18-55 kit lens. But I want a backpack I can use for everyday stuff too, that can fit a laptop and my tripod in the bag and not having to carry it on the side.

I've been looking at Lowepro stuff, but is the Transit too small to fit a tripod in it? Should I look at other brands too?

Why is traditional Japanese architecture so much more interesting than anything the Europeans have done?

Like look at that. That's fucking amazing. It's not just Japanese too...Chinese..Mayans..Aztecs...anyone with that jap genetics built some really cool fucking buildings.

Then you go to some piece of shit country like UK, Hungary, or Belgium, and it's just complete shit architecture that some two year old made and should have been bulldozed centuries ago

And the Japanese haven't had any kind of major artistic, cultural, or architectural achievement on the world stage since then. For Christ's sake, they barely even used WHEELS until the Meiji period.

Trust me, I live in Japan and 90% of everything here should be bulldozed right now. It's so old and decrepit and rotten and rusty and absolutely disgusting.

Looking for anyone who saved a particular thread in the past. I thought I had it backed up but I can't find it. It was a thread about a specific photographer's style of Tokyo night street photography, and in the middle of it, the actual photographer showed up and dropped knowledge in half English, half Japanese. Anyone know the thread? Anyone save the thread?

if you can be more specific about what exactly this... assignment(?) is, people can almost certainly give more pertinent advice. at the very least could you post an example of a portrait of "just someone's face"? i'm having trouble figuring whether you're talking about filling the frame with their face, shooting it in a way that their face is lit and the rest of their body is in shadow, or just a normal portrait that emphasizes the face in its composition. here are some general ideas off the top of my hed tho.

light it in a dynamic way that emphasizes whatever you want to emphasize with the portrait. are they violent or coldblooded? a bare strobe will emphasize a lot of the hard lines of their face. are they a real beauty queen or some shit? you could use a ring flash and/or a softbox to soften their features & make them seem more feminine. are they a loner by nature? light nothing but the face, make their face totally visually isolated. are they a beloved humanist of some sort? d-don't do that, I guess

also makeup and styling would def be pretty useful if you have access to those sorts of resources, or you know anyone wit the skills to function in those roles.

About 3 years ago I bought an Orbis ring flash adapter,. played with it for 20 mins then promptly forgot about it until half an hour ago.

What good are these things, is it purely a fashion photography thing? Can't for the life of me think why I bought it.

Also yes, my penis was too small to stick through.
