Going out to the American West over Spring Break for the first time to hike in Colorado and Oregon;
What can I expect the trails to be like?
Also does anyone with personal experience have some good trails for reference?

All I am going on so far is google references.
Have hiked the Appalachian before;
No worries about difficulty.

Also, General Trail and hiking thread.

Colorado mountains will be full of snow, except the very front of the front range, like Boulder. Some passes will still be under like 20ft of snow in the high country. Snowshoes would be helpful haha.

Get some yaktrax or anything in those lines. If you find yourself going down on a steep path covered with mud because of the melting snow, it will really help, specially if you are carrying a big backpack.

Keep at hand cheap construction leather gloves and use them when fixing camp. Nothing worst than ruining your hands because of wet and muddy rocks and wood.

Oregon here. You will need to purchase a recreation pass/license if you wish to use our trails. Not even joking.

Does anyone here make their own mosquito/bug repellent? I'm allergic to DEET and most commercial bug sprays. I tried using pure citronella oil but that didn't work out too good on our last fishing trip. I'm such a fag but I need help. Please tell me what non commercial repellents work for you. I'll almost try anything at this point.

I do have some "bug off" clothing that works pretty good but it's expensive and parts of my skin that aren't covered just get bitten like crazy.

AVON Skin so soft is a body cream in UK, but also used by UK army as insect repellent. Does not contain DEET or any other repellent, just works cuz perfume reasons
>>
https://www.avon.uk.com/product/354-1203/skin-so-soft/skin-so-soft-fast-hydration-dry-oil-spray

Results: A total of 74 events occurred. The event distribution was as follows: placebo—40 events; special mixture—28 events; Avon Skin So Soft—6 events; DEET—0 events.

Conclusions: When tested against a placebo, both DEET (P<.0001, NNT=1) and Avon Skin So Soft (P =.0001, NNT=1) were found to provide significantly better protection, while the special mixture did not (P =.30). When tested against the special mixture, both DEET (P<.0001, NNT=1) and Avon Skin So Soft (P =.0048, NNT=2) were found to provide better protection. When DEET and Avon Skin So Soft were compared with each other, Avon Skin So Soft was found to be 85% as effective as DEET (P =.046, NNT=7).

Thanks so much. Never heard of this but I have heard of AVON. I'll try to find a local rep. Thanks again.

Hey /out/, question for you. I work at a golf course during the summer, and oftentimes I end up working in the rain. I have a light jacket that I've used before to stay dry, but it's a cheap one and it's pretty shitty. I'm asking for advice on what jacket I should buy, keep in mind that I'm looking to spend as little as possible for the best protection from rain, but also pretty free range of motion, also I'm in Canada. Thanks /out/.

Pic related: it's the Viking one that I bought from Mark's Work Warehouse.

Get a poncho tarp. If you ever get lost you can build a shelter out of it. You never know when you'll go from golf course to lost man. Always best to be prepared.

I bought this and am very happy with it after a year of heavy use. Only 60 bucks and it is the same design, same materials as the 120 dollar north face equivalent. Not very breathable though, you will get hot in warm weather. Breathability will cost you. For 60 bucks though this jacket is amazing.

A natural disaster happens and you are stripped of all of your gear. You are left with $1000.00 U.S. and come across a store that has everything you'd consider buying at fair prices. Post what you would buy ( products/brands ) and how much it costs before you take your 14 day hike to the nearest safe area. If you roll dubs your budget is doubled.

I own 5.5 acres adjacent to a National Forest so I practically have thousands of miles of backyard. I worked like a slave and saved almost every penny living with my Dad until I was 24. I had $160K saved and put $100K down on the house I purchased for $314K. It was already equipped with solar panels and a natural spring well. It also has wood stove for heating but it does have central air I use for AC in the Summer. My monthly costs average about $1,500 a month. This doesn't include gas, health insurance, etc. just things related to my home such as insurance, taxes, utilities, groceries, etc. I take home almost $4,000 a month so it's all great. I wish had more acreage for my own private use and I wish it was a log cabin instead of a vinyl rectangle box rancher style home but I'm still very happy.

I've created my own trails to the NF trails and Rangers haven't bitched about it. I work in pest control and help out a lot taking care of bees nests and pest problems around camp sites and shelters. I take my dog on hikes every weekend and have lunch at shelters meeting a bunch of new hunters, fishermen, and your hipster hikers. My dog loves the attention. On my own property, I have my house, a shed I built for firewood storage, and it came with a large workshop that I had to fix up a bit. It holds my lawn equipment, ATV, and random junk I store for my Dad. I grow veggies and planted a few fruit trees. Planning on planting some blackberry and honeysuckle bushes. Thinking of getting some chickens so I can have eggs to feed my dog instead of buying dog food at the store. Are eggs good for dogs?

Good to see sumn dem people up north are starting to get those early spring bass. At the same time, the summer humidity and heat is kickin in down here. Finally got a day yesterday without crazy strong wind and was getting eaten alive by bugs at dusk because of this humidity.

Are those the really small ones? I have a couple of those ~1.5" deep diving Rebel crawdads and I haven't really used them a ton but the few times I did, they were definitely drawing little nibbles and bites from all sorts of stuff.

My first kayak was a bass pro shops ascend fs12t sit on top. It was great. The only fault was sitting in it for 6+ hours got painful.

Mine had a seat that was molded into the kayak. The new ones have a raised seat.

They do cost about $550 though.

mylar space blankets. can be used as sheet or to line shelter and deflect heat.

fire starter kit.

some paracord

poncho/tarp/wool blanket
>>
salt and pepper. metal canteen (full, replace water every ~2 week). flashlight, fire starter (a small vial of alcohol is very utilitarian for sterilizing and fires).

for food, i recommend blending rice into a powder. the thickening properties are very efficient, to the point a water bottle full of it can make nearly 15 bowls of porridge, that can be flavored with powder soup stock or sugar and spice. bugging out is an on the run type deal though, so some trail mix would also be welcome

extra pairs of socks and underwear. gloves. plastic garbage bags. a cheese cloth type linen (a shemagh can double as this) which can function as a filter and scarf, or whatever other application loose linens can provide ie mending . on that note, cordage, needle and thread. map of area. extra batteries for whatever electronics you have, including phone

do not doubt the importance of water and socks. a wool blanket and a little mylar pack could go a long way

this is more of an innawoods pack and less of a relocation pack. best thing though is near everything necessary can be added for free, or near free
>>
>>695169
40 garbage bags (extra large) they are cheap lightweight and offer insulation not found in nature anywhere and the number of possible applications are enormous. not to mention you should not leave garbage behind.

20 freezer bags (1 gallon size) can transport and store water and food items you gather. very compact when not used. you can take a dump in it and take it with you if you are tracked by dogs and not worry about smelling up your kit.

1 roll of duct tape: this combined with garbage bags is basically god tier shelter or whatever you need.

1 hatchet or small axe this is like the ultimate woodland multitool.

My friend told me that having stored my sleeping bag inside its stuff sack for too long decreased its temp rating. It's rated for 40 but now he says its probably more like 50.

I'm going to Utah where it's supposed to be around 30 at the lowest. Will I be okay if I have a nice pad and tend to sleep warm, plus cuddling with gf who has a 20 degree bag?

You will be fine, and your friend is right.

Post a pic of your GF.
>>
>>714130
This is far more true for down than synthetic. Down bags should always be layed out flat and open for storage (under a bed is a good place) synthetics can be stored in their stuff sacks, so long as you don't compress them.

If your bag is down and you've stored it compressed, I wouldn't trust it. At least spend a night in your back yard to see how it is at that temperature. Look into getting a liner; thermalite extreme will add 25F to your rating. Yes, it does look like overpriced mosquito netting, but they keep you surprisingly warm.

Also, post a pic of your gf.
>>
>>714144
Thanks for the info. My bag is synthetic. I will try to give it a test before I leave.

Probably not going to post gf pic though. Are people not worried someone they know will see when they do this? The internet can be a scary place

Hey /out/, so I bought my first bushcraft knife to use when in the woods. Thomas T263E stainless steel, integral handle, 4 1/4 inches blade and 2.5mm thick at spine.
I was going to buy a Mora 510 but the plastic handle felt cheap, also the guy at the store told me this one it's a better deal for the price, $17. I did some cutting and felt very nice and sturdy in hand, also sharp as fuck. The only thing I don't like is the china made.

Anyways, how did I do?

one of the unspoken criteria for bushcraft blades, to me, is that it has an overpronounced lip above the handle. quillon, guard, whatever it is called. there cannot be any doubt to me, that if im using it in unruly conditions, or need to use it for some heavy duty work, that my hand will slip and cut me open when im miles away from healthcare.

youll notice that almost every popular bushcraftsmen customize their blades to have this lip, but they never add it to their criteria, which i think is irresponsible.

Internet: On my phone I have 1 bar 3G, however with this nifty antanne I can get up to 30mbps dc-hspa+ and 80mbps LTE. Unfortunately 5G of data is $50 though I have a plan to get unlimited.

Second top antanne is to spread wifi across the block.

In time I will install a 30 - 50m tower in order to get gigabit Internet using airfiber radios
