If you could choose to live off the land anywhere in the world, where would you go? Deep in the woods? A mountain range? A coast?
>>720770
Probably deep in the woods somewhere like the boundary waters. Winters would be harsh but there are plenty of large mammals and fish to survive off of. The summer would provide a ton of good foraging food and fish galore.
This is the biome I'm most experienced in which sways my opinion although I also wouldn't mind a Caribbean island. Less stuff to forage there but most of them are full of boars to eat and of course there's fishing.

Shouldn't that image be reversed? Is there a desert that is west of a mountain range?
Oh ya forgot about chili.

So me and a friend are heading to Estonia to work on a farm for a few months near the Russian border. We get the weekends to ourselves and were wondering what we can get up to in this exotic land, any ideas?

Do you eat edible plants /out/?
What plants do you eat?
Fuck I've always wanted to try that but the ferns in australia are all poisonous. As for what I've eaten it's probably only been dandelion and purslane.
Cattails, a bunch of flowers, licorice root, clover. Cattails are my favorite though. Mild and lightly crunchy. I'll also chew on willow bark if I'm out and about and have a nasty headache. Tastes gross but it works just fine.
Wild berries too. There's a bazillion different species where I live.
What's a piece of kit you like to always take /out/ with you that might not be on everyone's list?
Pic related: External phone battery that can charge my phone up 8 times. Being able to find signal and make a phone call has saved me before. Now I make sure I've got one of these in my car and one in my pack. £20 on Amazon.

Does anyone get depressed after being out?
I just got back from a two day fishing trip. It didnt take long for me to see politics, idiot college kids, angry people, retarded tv shows. Just basically culture and society. It made me really depressed because i got detached from all that when i was out... now im feelin the feels

Yes. It happens to me after everything intensely fun or calming too.
Like laughing with a good friend, spending a day being active and minding my own business..
then suddenly I am "back to reality."
This me. Makes me want to start a hobo general thread and never come home.

I hear it's fairly common for thru hikers to consider suicide. Spending so much time away from bullshit then having it thrust upon you from all directions is always hard.
Is the beach a good bug out location? I live on the coast where there are miles of untouched coastline, what are the downsides of staying on the coast in the dunes?
Jumping, bitey sand fleas. The itching is unbearable. Also, sand everywhere. You and everything you love will be covered with sand at all times. When the wind blows you'll even have sand in your eyes. And rotting, desiccated sea life. Seaweed, ocean creatures all constantly rotting. The ocean is full of life and so is the sand. You will be surrounded at all times by things that are interested in eating you, living on or in you and things that are just plain disgusting. The ocean is great to visit, but eventually you're going to want to get the hell off the beach and get clean.

I'm looking into trekking with two buddies this next summer, but I'm missing some gear (everything) for the trip. It's probably only going to be a week or so, maybe two.
Now the thing is, I have a tight budget. I have to prioritise some things. Just now I found this seemingly large old backpack on ebay, and I was considering if it would be good enough for the trip. I just wanted to know if any of you have any experience with these types of bags? If they are complete shit I'll just get an Osprey Atmos, although then I have to budget something else.
The description:
"Large, Vintage German Military backpack for hiking.
Very large canvas, military backpack for hiking and excursions.
High volume, two large side pockets and one central. Inside also has a division.
Made of a very sturdy canvas and metal fasteners"
This will literally murder you after anything over 2 miles. Worst possible trekking bag you could have chosen.
>>719491
I'll just get the Osprey bag, sorry for asking..
Hey /out/, crossposting my shit with /sp/ I know. But well, here goes: I'm designing swimming gear for snorkeling, and I was wondering what would your dream equipment be? Keep in mind that it has to be realistic. Thanks /out/!

I personally love the snuba concept. incorporate that to cheap, light, easy to use, retracting hose that dosn't tangle, You know, the holy grail.

I'm planning to make a sort of field guide for something I'm involved in and I'm looking to find page protectors for small binders. Exactly what it's for matters little though since I'll likely use the supplies for other projects as well. This doesn't need to be heavy duty, I'd just like to be able to get a good amount of them for a decent price.
Currently I am looking at getting one of the small binder kits from Rite in the Rain (I have a few of their products already and I am pleased with them) but they don't sell basic page protectors, just the heavy duty ones as part of an accessory purchase (includes a page protector, a zipper pouch, and a business card page). Anyone know where I can get page protectors for a 6 ring memo binder? The RitR binder fits 4 5/8" x 7" pages, so that's what I'm basing this off of unless someone can recommend a good small binder alternative. I'd prefer if it were easy enough to fit in a pants pocket, and when needed I'll use simple weather proofing methods (ziplock bag for example) since this isn't likely to be an item I'll be using in difficult weather.
PS: I do have plans to set up an actual field/outdoors notebook kit for other uses, but that's more for a potential future situation.
>>718841
What's the scale of this project? Would printing on Tyvek be an option?
>>718846
It's honestly rather small. Mostly for a handful of friends and myself. And if it goes much beyond that I run the risk of dealing with copyright issues since I don't own the material I'll be putting into this guide. Assuming I don't fuck up the formatting, I don't expect this to get anywhere near 50 pages per guide, and assuming everyone wants one it'll be 7 books total.
hey /out/.
so this is probably a rather random/esoteric gear recommendation... but i'm looking for a water bottle that's good with atmospheric pressure changes.
so i fly jets in the military and i'm still enough of a Californian that the fact that i bring disposable water bottles on flights irritates me. the bag i have that holds all the checklists and such that i fly with has a convenient water bottle pocket that fits a regular disposable bottle. the thin plastic is not really that great at the pressure changes as evidenced by the half-crumpled bottle after a flight, and losing a lid in the cockpit is something i'd rather not do. space is at a premium, hence the "normal water bottle" size.
i've got a 32 oz hydroflask that i like, but the one time i flew with it, it got in the way. also with my mask and turbulence and everything, it's annoying to drink from wide mouth bottles
so rundown of desired/needed features:
some way of coping with pressure changes
retained lid/drink-thru lid
narrow mouth if
reuseable
same diameter as a "standard" disposable water bottle
insulation would be nice.
any suggestions
Don't you guys still use Gatorade bottles as toilets?
>>718722
no, there's like this absorbent gel stuff in a plastic bag with a built-in funnel you pee in.
Jet pilots post on 4chan? Whatta time to be alive! Also this bottle is cool, It's got a self sealing spout so you don't spray water on the controls and crash in a fiery inferno.
Okay which one of you faggots is this?

Gonna spend my dividend on Trekking Poles, because that's the only piece of gear I don't have.
What am I looking for in a good pair of poles? I know I want cork handles, but other than that what makes a good trek pole? Anybody have a recommendation (has to be sold at REI)?
you want flick locks or tent/z pole style. get all the attachments when you buy the poles. i quite like my black diamond carbon z's.
get flick lock, twist lock is unreliable when it's wet (rain or snow). get snow baskets if you need them. aluminum poles are generally better if you're a heavier guy, i've heard reports of carbon ones breaking. i use carbon poles and have only broken one skiing, never while backpacking, but i'm not that heavy + ultralight.

Snapped my carbon fiber ones just crossing a creek on the Continental divide. Just bend them the right way and pop
Can we get an /out/ movies thread?
Here are some of my favorites
The snow walker (pic related)
Into the wild (I know I know fuck off)
Alive
127 hours
All of the I shouldn't be alive's
And a bunch I can't think of right now but I would like to watch more.
Tell me about your favorite out movies.
I don't care if it is a documentary like the one about the naval ship that sunk during ww2? And the crew had to survive the sharks
A drama like some of the above
Or even a zombie movie that contains some useful info and isn't completely stupid

Honestly I really loved Wild, and it finally settled for me that my next grand adventure will be the Pacific Crest Trail in 2017

Well I'm a book pleb but if you haven't read hatchet and lord of the flies you need some help. I also very much enjoyed Z for Zachariah. I watched the movie after the book and it was terrible.
