6'4" here. I bought a 2 person tent and sleeping bag. Very roomy and comfy. Only downside is the draft that comes in the sleeping bag when it gets cold and windy at night.

/too drunk to not edit
all you really need to do is examine to dimensions before you buy. use one person tent to narrow down the search and then see what people say about the actually length. i'm 6'4" and have used pic related many times before. hannibal is hilarious btw, good taste.
>>
>>713583
What this guy said is right but be careful, just because you are 77 inches long doesn't mean an 80 inch tent will fit you

I'm 6'3 and my tent is 90" long and I just fit lengthwise without laying at an angle. You have to remember you are longer lying down because your feet point out and you stretch out

I love the UP, not from there but it's about 30 minute drive to the WI-MI border

Does /out/ ever get blisters from hiking? I just got some on both of my heels for the first time after getting new shoes, and its fucking bullshit. Now i've looked up all this information about tying shoes differently and getting some fancy expensive socks.

Does /out/ have any recommendations for good blister prevention?

YMMV
>thin inner stretchy liners
>smartwool outer sock
>bring extra pair of both
>wash the pair you wear at the end of the day
>wash them well
>put on clean pair
>wet pair rides strapped outside the pack to dry the whole next day
It's a little effort, and doesn't work as well if it's raining, but clean fluffy socks help prevent blisters better than dirty squashed fibers

Dubble socks and tape hot spots, don't tape too tight as you might fuck up nerves for awhile.

Thanks guys, looks like good socks are important, i've been just tossing on whatever. Do you really just put whatever tape is on hand over it?

Hi everyone, me and a friend plan on going camping in south west Australia soon. Was wondering if there are any good, legal places that are accessible and somewhat isolated. We are bringing only essentials and around 1 weeks supply of food and water. We're hoping to collect water and possibly hunt/fish to stay as long as possible.

Any tips on where to go? what to bring? What we can hunt/ trap? legal / danger issues? Edible flora?

Ask your local authority, whether that be the national parks or state forest.

brunswickjunctionfag here,
i'm not sure about much south of bunbury, but around meilup beach in dunsborough has some really nice bushland and coast, but i doubt theres any fresh water or game.
Between bunno and Perth theres a lot of dams and lakes you could check out up in the hills, they're pretty nice
If you're looking for isolation, i suggest you head inland towards the forests or over the hills

Moron here, I don't have time to post in another thread (since I'm leaving for a week long trip earlySaturday morning) so I'll ask here. I just bought a JetBoil stove, and after looking online and skimming through the operating manual I haven't seen a clarification as to whether this is solely intended to boil water, or if it can boil food (example: oatmeal, ramen, etc). If it's the former, do I just pour the boiling water on top of a bowl of oatmeal or MRE and call it a meal? Or can I do the latter? Thanks

...why wouldn't you be able to cook food in it? of course it does both, boils water and boils food inside. not useful for much more than that....
>>
Stoves are useful for if you bring food that needs to be cooked for lunch of breakfast. You shouldn't have to stop in the middle of the day and make a fire to cook something, because then you have to wait until the embers burn out. If you have unlimited source of water to drown it out, then I guess it doesn't make a difference, but it's still just easier to bring a stove.

I've posted the same before...

If youre going to cook in it the Jetboil flash and zip need to be boil in the bag food only, you'll burn anything else.

It is possible to cook with a Minimo as the flame is a lot more tweakable. I bought the Minimo to use the stove, and run with my old Jetboil pot as it packs better for me. I'd also advise buying a Jetboil pot stand, it lets you cook/use normal pans as if it were a normal gas stove. This way I have the balls out fast efficient boil of a Jetboil for some stuff and the versatility of a normal gas stove for cooking beyond the scope of boil in the bag.

This is just pancakes but when the weather is fine, I often do a full cooked breakfast on the beach with mine

>This is OC but I liked it and pasta'd it so I wouldn't have to retype it if I felt like sharing again.

I live in a rural town, it's all woods and farmland. The tallest hill in town has been a farm since around 1690. It's behind my parents' woods. They own several acres of forest (with the neighbors all owning several acres as well) and this large hilltop field abuts the back of all of our land, with a stone wall separating it from the forest. I think it's about 25 acres cleared. The farm itself is long gone but a farmer still owns the land and comes and hays it once or twice a year.

My childhood was filled with adventures in the woods, and when we were old enough to explore all the way back to the field it was like a rite of passage. That old stone wall, laying there in the shadows, overgrown, covered in vines. It's hard to even see out into the field during summer because the brambles and vines are so thick at the edge. Old trees of cider apples grow feral in the thicket beyond the wall, too deep to even sample an apple. This is what made the field itself so great. It was hard to get to, and when you did, the world opened-up into what seemed like an endless green pasture with the biggest sky you could ever get to see in New England. The view from the top was amazing, especially for a kid. The slope down the opposite side would grow acres of milkweed in the fall and we'd spend the day out there having wars with milkweed pods, throwing them at each other until someone got the juice and their eye and cried.

I move a lot as an adult. In one city or another, around the US and overseas, but every few years I come back when I'm between things - jobs, moves, etc. I get back into camping and enjoying the woods before my family sells the property. I still walk out on nice days and follow the stonewall, fight through the prickers and walk around the field and enjoy the view from the top. Even as an adult I throw a few milkweed pods, despite the fact there's nobody there to thrown them at. I still love the vines, the sky, the forbidden apples.

Hello friends, this is my first time to this particular board, i normally frequent /o/.

I will be buying a rural property in australia soon to build a mansion on, something i plan on being entirely self contained

I've only ever owned city properties, though this has been my dream for a long time with frequent countryside trips.

>Are there any anons who know how this process will go?
>Any anons who have built their own homes?
>How to be self-sufficient so i don't have to deal with utilities if possible?
>What pitfalls to look out for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and i guess we can also make this a self-sufficiency thread for discussion on that sort of stuff (solar, rainwater tanks)

Where in Oz? This will determine a suitable set up.
Whats your budget? And what do you mean by mansion?
Do you want total self sufficiency or just off-grid utilities? What about food?
Do you have any idea what you're getting into?
What about building experience?
>>
>>715636
Victoria's east, somewhere nice and green. At least 100 acres plus.

My budget is 5 million, including the house, landscaping, ect
If i liquidated assets or got a loan i could raise another 10 in capital. So i'm very well set for this, i've been working hard towards my dream for a long time.

I plan to go to the supermarket for food, i just mean i don't want to be paying for electricity or water in the long run.

I don't really, but it's something i want to do. I've lived in the city my whole life and i always go on roadtrips and see how beautiful it is out in the country.

I have no building experience, but i do have the money to get workers. Not sure how that works on a rural property though.
>>
>>715638
Mate with that kind of money you can do whatever you want, like maybe hiring project manager to hire a green architect and off-grid system engineer to hire workers and telling them how you want to live instead of asking a bunch of suburban homescrubbers on 4chan.

We're flattered that you thought of us first but get your ass a professional consultation and get this shit moving, you can actually live the dream here so do it right.

Having a five day trip starting on Sunday, today I see that one of my sleeping bag zippers has come off the track: since I'm expecting below-freezing temperatures for my backpacking trip, I've been desperately searching for any way to fix it: I've taken it to a tailor who couldn't do anything, the people at REI couldn't do anything, and literally not one fucking arts & crafts store in my area carries any kind of zipper repair kit. I have one day to fix this, what do I do?

If you're an REI member can't you just return it and get a new one? Assuming it's from REI.

Loneliness is just boredom. Look around for some woods porn.

Pretty much what this Anon said. When you're innawoods, you shouldn't have the time to get bored. You always have something to do, so you won't get lonely.

Sorry I could not resist.

If you don't get the joke watch the Big Lez Show on Youtube.

I did it for 2 years. I built a shack from plywood and pallets I got from the dump, It way in the back of this summer camp property. I made a little garden, outhouse, wood shed, and workshop. I got tools off craigslist for cheap including furniture. Dumpster diving, salvation army, I even learned guitar and did cover songs at bars for $50 for 20 songs and learned crafts to sell at the farmer's market.

For all you who live in large metropolitan areas, how /out/ is your city? I know not everyone here lives the /out/ dream of complete self sufficiency and isolation in the woods.

I live in the San Francisco area.
Pros:
>a lot of woods and nature close to the city, makes it easy to get away quickly.
>wide variety of outdoor environments with a several hour's drive- desert, forest, mountains, coastline, meadow, etc.
>pretty good solitude in some natural areas, so long as you don't go during peak times to popular easy places.
>possible to live in the woods and still commute to work in the city

Cons:
>lots of traffic, makes it hard to get away
>expensive unless you live in a shitty neighborhood
>some natural areas crowded with fuckers (Marin headlands)
>natural areas are dispersed, making only a few sites within an hour of SF suitable for backpacking

So where do you live and how /out/ is it?
