Are extreme performance tires okay for a daily driver? Kind of want to throw Dunlop ZII Star Specs on my DD between March/October for max grip while still having usable traction in the rain. How bad as the treadwear and noise?
>>15924651
You have to be really careful even on cooler nights in the summer. I was talking to a guy with a ZR1 Vette and those weren't like track tires but still really sticky and it was a September night in the 50s and he was about to put the thing away for the winter because the tires were borderline dangerous unless he really started driving on them.
>do a hektik burnout in front of a cop
"Sorry officer, I just needed to get some heat in my tires!"
Also I hope you aren't expecting the tires to last 40k miles.
Look for a 300 Treadwear Tire like Michelin Pilot Super Sports. They're a bit more manageable in colder temps and don't wear out as quickly as Direzzas. Add some negative camber and you'll be at 80-90% the performance of one anyways (dual compound iirc that's stickier towards outside of the tread)
>>15924651
They'll be fine, but be mindful of cold pavement.
Remember also that they'll be loud as fuck, and rotate them often.
Sup /o/,
I have a question about brake calipers.
I understand the basic principle of the fluid pressure behind the pistons causing them to clamp down on the rotors.
But what is the mechanism responsible for returning the pistons far back enough to not permanently lock the brakes?
If I take off my wheel and apply the brakes, those pistons will extend and are completely fucking locked in and there is zero chance I can return them to normal without bleeding the entire system.
how the hell does the brake rotor return them into position enough to not lock?
Vacuum in the hydraulic ayatem
nothing, they remain right against the pad but don't apply the pressure necessary to create drag/friction.
>>15924598
thank you. that makes sense. is the vacuum really that strong?

What percentage of your annual income should you spend on a car?
Also, under what circumstance is it acceptable to buy a new car? How many / what reasons do you think you should have?
>>15924522
>What percentage of your annual income should you spend on a car?
There are some rough guidelines out there, but I think it depends on too many factors for there to be a blanket percentage. Better to evaluate what you can afford after covering your other expenses, savings, retirement, and so on.
>under what circumstance is it acceptable to buy a new car
Assuming you mean brand new and financial circumstances, almost none. But from an emotional standpoint, I think being the first owner of a car you really like might be worth the depreciation hit.
TL;DR - It depends.
>>15924522
No more than 30% of what you currently have left over each month.
i like the 15% rule
take your gross annual income
if you're spending more than 15% of that on everything car related (auto loan payments, insurance payments, gasoline costs, and mods to some extent) you should probably reconsider your situation
15% is pretty good depending on what you do, gives you a good bit of wiggle room, but is well within margins so it doesn't obliterate your paychecks
Does a car exist that requires the engine to be taken out for an oil change?
I've heard about it once and I'm pretty sure its some old Italian car but I might be wrong. Thought it might have been something like a F355 or a Testarossa or a Countach but none of these seem to.
>>15924521
Not sure about oil changes but there are a few that are required to be taken out for maintenance.
The F355 and the older 911s for example. I think maybe the MR2 aswell.
The Veyron's oil change procedure includes taking off the cylinder heads to inspect everything. They look for every little thing that's not in tolerance and all the fasteners in the engine are one time use only.
Probably the Lotus Esprit and Europa. They need engines out pretty damn quick, regardless.
I have no idea what to get. Current car is an 08 GT with some mods, but some things are starting to bug me and going to cost ~$1,000 to fix, plus the car has some other quirks.
I like 2-doors, even 2-seaters. Practicality isn't a huge issue but I'd prefer to stay on the cheaper end. All cars suck though
C5 Corvette has piss poor late 90s GM interior and very small
5.0 GT has dogshit MT-82
GTI is pretty gay looking and fwd is a downside
BRZ underpowered
S2000 small and underpowered
350z dated. 370z pricey and dated
GTO dated interior, low quality, not many great ones on the market. I do like it though.
Terminator dated and pricey but i love them
Focus ST is ok but kinda gay looking. also fwd
please don't mention a 4th gen f-body even a ws6
Is there anything i'm missing?
>>15924455
Here you go
>>15924455
personally I would go for a corvette if you can find a good one
you should have your pick of 03-04 (between generations) at ~20k
interior materials are overrated anyway
if you really want to stretch you might be able to find a ~06 cayman or early 00 911 but good luck with maintenance
>>15924471
dated in performance for that price
>>15924501
would still kinda suck to daily

Also, my car has a loud whirling sound whenever the gears lock and I am not accelerating. Is that just a transmission fluid issue or do I have to take apart the clutch cylinder again?

Turbo kit. Easy 300 hp at the wheels. You don't have much choice in this weight class anyway.
Need help. I need a bolt, this bolt is a M10 at least 60mm long with a 1.5 inch pinch on it.
The problem I am having is Ford has decided to stop making this fucking bolt. Besides going to junk yards what would you suggest I try and do to obtain new ones.
Would getting them made be pretty pricey? I have no clue how that shit works, I just know it needs to be at least grade 10, 8 if I want the bare minimum
If I can't get them new I'll just buy all of them from a yard and horde that shit.
No luck at Ace hardware or Lowes?
>>15923620
Tried aces website, they only carry M10 bolts. None of the big three auto retailers carry the bolt above grade 5. I checked home depo and lose but it only pulled up bolts.
There is one way I can get it but it requires me to spend 50 bucks on ball joint kit from MOOG. But 50 bucks for 1 bolt is just silly even though I'd have a ball joint in storage if I needed it.
>>15923653
Go to home depot or tractor supply you nog.
Hey /o/, I would like to preface my post by saying my knowledge of car repairs does not go beyond rudimentary maintenance (oil changes, installing wipers, etc.), so I apologize if I am asking a basic-bitch question.
I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 and I have recently encounter a major issue. My headlights (low and high beams) and blower motor are not working at all. Conversely, my dash light, turn signals, brake lights, hazard signals, and radio work perfectly fine. Any ideas for where to start looking for the cause of the issue, /o/? Thanks in advance.
Check the fuse boxes. One will be under the hood and one will be under the dash somewhere.
>>15923666
I just did, Satan. My relays and fuses passed my novice eye-test; none of them were melted or corroded.
Reading that it might be an issue with the ignition switch. Going to do some more research into that.
one of the fuse boxes is under the dash right next to where the OBD port is. there's a large rounded panel that'll just pop right out, and that's the interior fuse panel.
The other fuse panel is up in the top right of the engine bay.
>>15923700
did the fuses all connect? You can look at them and with just a glance tell if any are blown.
Does your battery have any corrosion on it? Ground wire working fine?
Found a BMW 2002 Tii a few miles north of Watkins glen just off of rt. 414
