is there anything that has the bad guy win in the end?
i feel really tired with the storyline of "this one girl is the prophecy child, the only one who can stop this giant evil magic monster" or whatever the fuck, and against all odds they just luck or dues ex machina their way into the enemy base, sidestep all reality and get right to the enemies one, easly defendable weakness and exploit it to win.
is there anything where its just like, no fuck you, your main character's journey was shit and useless, they just lose at the end.i suppose that book ending would leave a really bad taste in the reader's mouth, but is there some short story or something like this?

>/lit/ what are the essential books to a subject largely irrelevant to literature?
I just started to read fiction because I exhausted all of the good video games that exist. I've read a bit in high school. I just finished Crime and Punishment and am looking for a shorter novel of around 300 pages as I alternate and finish the rest of Dostoyevsky. Preferably a classic novel.

Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol
https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=timer&oq=timer&aqs=chrome.0.69i59.479j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=stopwatch
Took me 1 minute and 49 seconds, I'd say it's around average.
If I am thinking about how quickly I need to read this page or how soon will it be that I have finished this book, have I really read anything?
>>9732436
Just read a few pages first to get into the flow of it and then time yourself after a while for a page.
>>9732447
i think you almost completely missed what he was saying
What translation do you have?
>>9732419
i have p&v. i like it and have compared it to garnett. would be interested in trying another, but honestly i find it very colorful and enjoyable, even if a little awkward. i prefer awkward and colorful in dosteovsky to reading like a timeless novel "should read." for tolstoy it's another story, i'd rather not read p&v

If I am understanding the ending of this book correctly, why was it that the genetically engineered beings who presumably 'wrote' the events in atomised wrote more about the intricate details of the tip of Bruno's penis than the life of Michael's Djerzinski and the intricacies of his science that made them?
Pic unrelated
a lot of men live for the intricate details of their cockheads. maybe most of them
so what was the point of clones again, to eliminate sexual frustration? was Houellebecq serious or joking?
>>9732379
I get that but the story made sense up until the last 2 pages when it was revealed that it was them. It sort of came off as wee bit lazy when you think that the book really did spend more time telling the story of Bruno who is no where near as important to the telling of the history of these Beings as opposed to Michael who essentially created them.
What does /lit/ think about Barnes&Noble Classics? See pic related.
>Not those retarded try-hard plastic/leather bound editions but those in pic related.
I avoid buying them because they say Barnes and Noble on the spine. Call me petty but that to me is like having Walmart or a Target logo on the spine.
I love them because they're economical. They're not the most sturdy, but they get the job done. The designs are a bit hideous, though, but you get what you pay for; these aren't for display.
>>9732167
They sell them for $5 at my local branch. That's hard to beat for books that usually run in the $10-$12 range.
I started reading this book recently and i really like the style in which it is written and the story so far. Opinions?
It's a very good book. Edith gets raped; by whom is a mystery
>>9732135
Finished it a week ago, I enjoyed it. Williams draws out the common essence of the human soul (he'd probably refer to is as "love") so effortlessly that I was often caught off-guard. The prose isn't unnecessarily florid, and there's the occasional sentence that's so complete that I can't help but reread the entire paragraph; mostly character descriptions, but occasionally Stoner's own train of thought.
His relationship with Edith was particularly disturbing as I recently I got out of a long-term relationship with a similar woman.
Been wanting to know other's thoughts as well, though.

>By whom is a mystery
Her father?
How do you pronounce the word 'symmetry' in this poem?
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
I'm not a native speaker and I though the '-y' in symmetry rhymed with "tree", not "try"?
"symmetry" does rhyme with tree, but word pronunciations change over the years. It could also just be a half rhyme.

>Hades was actually one of the nicest Gods
>portrayed as an asshole even though the others have done far worse things
>Christcucks demonized every Pagan god and so Hades was doomed as the portrayal of him being evil
When is Hades going to get the recognition he deserves. At least that faggot Agamemnon got his comeuppance for not giving Hades his due. The only really bad thing he caused was due to his innocent courtship. It was his bitchy mother in law who decided to fuck over the greeks but that wasn't his fault
Also even other god of death and god of other things that are considered negative are shat on. They're just doing their job

I love how you're talking about christcucks, but you're still sooooooooooo influenced by Christianity in the way you write.

/memo/ -- Memorisation general thread.
This thread is for talking about works of literature, poetry, speeches etc. you have committed to memory, talking about techniques to do so and sharing ideas for good works to memorise.
Basic list of suggestions from last thread: https://pastebin.com/nmFvNjBf
i do not memorize, my brain automatically retains everything that i find meaningful, only the essence is kept
The Raven is quite a good one, it's use of repetition makes it quite easy to memorise
>>9731627
Yes that is generally how normal humans operate, the point is to precisely memorise, to heart works of literature which one wants to keep with them at all times.
