I inherited at least two hundred books of the star trek tng expanded universe.
What do.
drop it off at catholic charities, maybe a recovering addict or undocumented immigrant can learn to read from it
>>9770790
And i get what out of this?
Give me some sensible solutions.
>>9770793
so u want 200 star trek novels taking up space in your apartment forever? i guess u could sell them on ebay? after shipping and listing fees you might make 20 bucks or something i guess
What was her fucking problem?
she was pretentious as hell and up her own ass
but she was also tapped into some real shit
>>9770786
>her
found the problem
>it's another thread about some bourgeois jew
how about some diversity
What does /lit/ think of this collection?
Are they worth reading? Will I become a learned man?
>>9770774
I've never known anyone to have actually read the book themselves. I keep a collection for aesthetic purposes and read annotated/better translated copies of the same books.
>>9770868
So the books are good, but translations have improved since 1910
I work at an antique auction business and we just had a set of these come in the other day.
everyday i ask myself what it would feel to be James Joyce
do any of you does this with your favorite writers? i can't be the only one
honestly i don't give a fuck about the author
I work out every day
>>9770705
i take that as a yes
Why is magical realism the only fantasy favored by academia, and why is the dystopia the only science fiction favored by academia?
I though bradburry and burroughs and that guy who wrote conan were still studied in writing classes.
>>9770684
Bradbury wrote dystopian novels.
>Conan
>studied in classes
>>9770684
>conan
wait u mean i can read some pulpy shit like conan and get away with it
im so bored of modernists crap, proust is ok but the rest sucks, i either need some pynchonian japes and gags, or maybe some pulpy shit to get me back in the mood to turn pages
tell me if I'm wrong /lit/.
Death of the author is the concept that the intent of an author is irrelevant, or at least less important than what the people experiencing his work perceive about it, specially if it goes against something the author believes.
>>9770643
Sort of, it's not just about intent of the author though, its the idea that any knowledge about the author is irrelevant, including biographical information, personal beliefs, or even the historical context, and letting the work stand entirely by itself. I think it's useful in some cases, like reading Ender's Game, but ultimately leads to a flawed understanding of the material. It's not exactly /lit/, but I think Chris-chan serves as an extreme example of why it just doesn't work.
>>9770643
No, it's one should not be limited by speculating about "intent" since that's muddy territory. To be clear, a critical interpretation that does not have any basis in the text is not a cogent one. So it's not about "making up your own meaning," since it's all from the text itself.
>>9770643
authorial intent literally never mattered.
/lit/
my housemates keep insisting that i read Infinite Jest because "it will change your life, once you've read it, you will be a different person". I want to discuss literature with them but they refuse to read any of the writers I like (for record, IJ is the only novel either of them read last year). What are some good ways to BTFO dfw and get these plebs off my back?
>>9770595
>What are some good ways to BTFO dfw and get these plebs off my back?
Read the novel you fucking pseud.
You're worse than your housemates that praise the meme book, because you are disparaging something you know nothing about.
>>9770608
It's not so much that I don't want to read it but there's a bunch of other shit i want to read more and for better reasons. I resent this idea that i absolutely have to read any particular book.
>>9770719
if you have friends that really love a book just read it for them wtf. relating with literature with someone else is awesome
Autist here. Have I been misusing this reaction image of Bloomkun? I usually use it to express contempt but on 2 separate occasions people seemed confused so maybe I have misread his expression
to be honest, i don't understand 80% of reaction images in this website
>>9770589
use this one instead
>>9770589
to me it's like "expressing shock aloofly"
is there such thing as high brow sci-fi with good prose? i'm not sure.
>>9770364
Book of the new sun
>>9770369
ok im gonna get the first one and see how it is. thnx
No. Gene and Vance produced some interesting prose, but nothing artistically sophisticated.
I finished with Dracula yesterday. There is no words which represents the sweet tears of my heart that this novel made me drop. It's the first book that made me feel in love.
What do you think about it?
>>9770313
It was alright. I read it in high school and everyone that got past how hard it was to read wouldn't shut up about how amazing it was.
That being said I don't think it's neither hard to read or amazing. It's pretty good though. My personal vendetta being how rushed it seemed to get near the end.
I started it several months ago and was liking a lot but then some major life events happened and I haven't finished it.
>>9770313
It's okay. I get the praise since it's usually babby's first literary horror. But do read more literary horror, f a m, and then join us in the Lovecraft / cosmic horror threads.
What's your book about, anon?
which one?
>>9770266
Its about a telephone conversation that becomes increasingly convoluted as the various people involved demand to speak to others in opposing parties if that makes sense. It starts with a man calling the call center of mid level pharmaceutical company and spirals out from there. I have no goal other than 1. Making it very funny and 2. Ranting against healthcare/doctors/big pharma. It's personal
>>9770311
This honestly sounds hilarious. You better actual start and finish this book anon, I'm holding you to it.
Is it possible to write actual good literature about unrequited love? Examples of this?
Yes, if it's from the perspective of the person being pined after rather than the person doing the pining.
haven't read it myself but I think "The sorrows of young Werther" is this
>>9770254
>t. gay fag
"Life is just another state of matter, given the right physical conditions it arises because its just a collection of chemical reactions"
"Consciousness is an evolutionary development just like an eagle claw, but because its use is not to tear flesh apart but analyze abstract concepts and give meaning to things it can be directed inward with mixed results.
Basically im at this philosophical point in my life, what should i read?
Read about how consciousness can't possibly be an emergent phenomena. That is a topic covered in the umbrella of books on Idealism.
>>9770222
That can't be asserted with certainty. Cite something credible. You can't.
>>9770230
I wasn't arguing for the position I posted. I recommended it to OP as a topic he should read if he is interested in having his own philosophy argued against.
If we consider "Beat" an actual genre and not just a scene would Bukowski and Thompson be considered beat?
if by beat u mean west coast homosexuals then sure why not
>>9770123
What defines the "Beat" genre?
>>9770123
What is beat
-Best work is short fiction
-gay eye patch
-Drunk
-Alleged fart sniffing pervert
WHY?
>>9770118
>Alleged
You're new here, aren't you?
>>9770118
Joyce is like Shakespeare. People will be reading his shit forever.
>>9771239
Joyce didn't think he would be timeless
