how do i know which version to want

Is this worth reading? I just finished my first Bolano book (Amulet) and loved it, and I've heard that he saw himself more as a poet than a novelist, so I figured his poetry would be a good place to continue reading him. However, I've heard mixed things about this collection and his poetic work in general. Was he incorrect in his assessment of his own work, or is his poetry actually his main achievement?

Also, what are his best translations, in terms of both novels and poetry? I like the fact that this one is a bilingual edition since I have a decent grasp of Spanish from taking it in high school, but I don't feel comfortable reading literature in the original.

I say this as an avid Bolano enthusiast, go to The Savage Detectives or some of his shorter works (Nazi Literature, Last Evenings...). while I have not read his poetry collections, his poetry does translate into his fiction and SD is sort of a parody of his poetic ventures. Though I have no doubt that his poetry is just as blissful as his writing, I think his fiction will be more of a welcome to you.

Fuck it, Bolano thread!

If you have to try to convince them in the first place, it's best not to bother. Either you like books or you don't. You can recommend something you think they'll like, but if they're an ADD pleb who keeps complaining about not being able to focus, there's really no changing that.

Okay guys, I've decided to write a screenplay for a TV show adaptation of Lolita. I was wondering, how would you go about doing this? I'm having a hard time deciding if I should change the time setting of the story. Like perhaps it's set in the 70s or 80s instead and they travel around in a VW van and Humbert is disgusted with American pop culture of that time instead. I want to keep things in Humbert's perspective because I feel lile a lot of average readers gloss over that, and the fact that he is an unreliable narrator. Have any advice for me? Any preferences or recommendations or requests you habe for my little project?

Watch Kubrick do it far better than you could
>>
>>9765528
the main issue with the tv show adaptation would probably be the unreliable narrator. hard to distort facts the way Humbert is supposed to when what is actually happening is occurring before your eyes. part of the genius of the book is the fact that we truly don't know what happened precisely because we *didn't* see it with our own eyes, and making it into a tv show would make interpretation more difficult

Les Miserables, some of the dialogues there seem very forced and not something one person would say to another.

I'm trying create an illustrated children's book, something directed towards 9 years old and more.
I want to write a dark story, something in the vein of Coraline or A monster calls.
The thing is that I have absolutely no experience in writing for childrens, especially when adressing themes such as the ones explored in darker stories.
Has anyone here some tips and advices, or even articles or books that I should read to help me build and write a consistent story aimed toward kids?

Read the actual children's classics like Anne of Green Gables, Heidi, The Hobbit, Narnia, Madeline, Alice in Wonderland etc.

As an example this is a page from a book for the age group that I am aiming for.

What do you guys think of this man and his work? Favorite storie/s? Also Poe vs Lovecraft thread and I'd very gladly take recommendations for similar authors. Even more recent good gothic horror, not necessarily with the gothic aspect

I've always had a soft spot for The Cask of Amontillado and The Telltale Heart. I like the way The Murders in the Rue Morgue is written but the reveal is fucking stupid. The Fall of the House of Usher is a must too.

I think Lovecraft's Mythos stuff is overrated but his Dream Cycle stories are actually really good early sci-fi.
>>
What's his dream cycle? Agreeing about Telltale Heart and House of Usher, should read Amantillado soon.

So how many hours do you read a day, a week? I'm a fucking slow reader and I don't think I've read 30 books so I'm starting to get a little more serious now. I read about 2 hours maybe 2 and a half a day. Is that a good start? I'm preoccupied with other things to do more than that for now.

>>
2 and a half is great.

I read only about 20 minutes before bed before I fall asleep. Used to read a lot longer but I accidentally conditioned myself to associate reading with dozing off.
>>
>>9765217
Yeah that was my problem as well but I think it helped not reading at all for about half a year and then starting to read in the morning on my couch with a cup of coffee. I couldn't fall asleep if I wanted to.
>>
Depends on the day. If I work all day I'm lucky to have the energy to read 30 minutes. On weekends I usually read about 8 hours, but this is spread across a few books I read concurrently to not get bored/overloaded.
