>depression due to being unloved is /r9k/
I wanted to kill myself after my fiance left me and said she didn't love me anymore. It's definitely one of the worst feels there is, and I still have crippling depression.

That said, this book looks more appealing every day. Definitely going to add it to my list.

What is the foundation of the association cryptic=aesthetic value?

Let me explain: Im not talking about books being an impossible riddle, but about the fact that generally, in literature at least, there's a tendency to 'veil' the message trying to be conveyed (I know most works dont have a definitive meaning, but I hope you get what Im saying).

Another use for 'hiding' stuff from audience/readers that comes to mind is the concept of suspense, which undeniably produces an effect, but it could be discussed if this is the whole purpose, or else the fundamentation of its aesthetic value/use comes from something more.

Wat did I just write

im not sure what you're talking about. But the whole point of literature/poetry is that is demonstrates something that couldn't be described in any other way, at least when it's successful. If you can reduce a book/poem's point to a sentence than it is most likely poor or mediocre. If you're talking about how authors in oppressive regimes sometimes use irony to say something potentially undermining to the king or whatever that is a different conversation.
>>
>>9767743
I disagree with your thesis, although considering the amount of Joyce fans here, I will be in the minority.

Post-modern obscurantistism in prose is awful. The point of literature is to convey a story. If you want a mystery, use the narrative to convey it, not page structure. Vollman is particularly egregious in this.
>>
>>9767743

I agree. It's something especially prevalent in song lyrics, a number of artists constantly make obtuse autobiographical references in their works, they are making a living from "my diary desu"

As an entrepreneur or self-employed you can do rather well but in any sort of corporate environment you'll struggle.
>>
>>9767558
Even people with degrees struggle. Occupations like journalist, op-ed columnist, fiction author, etc. are really what (You) make of them, degree or not. If you have talent and a willingness to exploit yourself, you will be successful.

>>9767563

I don't think there's a way to become a self-employed scholar.

Let me tell you about the literary lifestyle:
>you wake up at 4:00 and brush your teeth
>you eat a yoghurt with cornflakes, grapes and coffee
>you write for 4 hours
>then you go for a half hour run, shower quickly and go to university studying for a useless degree, no matter whether STEM or liberal arts
>when you ahve no lectures you are at the university library studying the material
>at 17:00 you go to the elderly care residence where you clean old peoples' asses and make their beds
>at 20:30 you return home, prepare for gym where you lift weights for an hour
>You shower, then read a book for half an hour until 22:00 when you sleep
>whenever you can browse /lit/ and /pol/ and despair a little more

When you are older you can switch the 8 hours of uni with more reading, work and perhaps a walk. Forget the learned literary circles meeting together to discuss books. Forget /lit/ girls or bros. The /lit/ lifestyle is one of solitude. You will cease to be able to connect to people and people will try to avoid you in return.

William James says conversion is basically when religion becomes the primary mover in someones life.

Being literary is when books become the primary motivation or object of consumption in someones life

AKA A waste of money. What do you guys think about it? Like I said I personally believe it's a waste of money. I have to spend 100 bucks on a stupid ass device and I still got to buy the books? Why not just buy the books themselves?

Okay, I don't want to sound like a /pol/tard. But I was thinking about The Chronicles of Narnia, and are the Calormenes meant to be an allegory for Islam?

Think about it. And considering they were largely responsible for the fall of Narnia... what was Lewis getting at here?

>you will NEVER nervously put on your formal robes in a spare compartment of the Hogwarts Express feeling so out of place and unprepared to be around people who have known about magic their entire lives and many of whom know each other already and feel your heart thudding in your chest as you get on a boat to cross the Great Lake and have the kids around you talk and laugh and have one blonde-haired kid stare at you menacingly the entire time until you step off onto a stone platform and follow Hagrid up a flight of winding stone steps towards the main entrance, where Ms McGonaghal introduces herself and reminds you of procedures and tells you to wait there while you hear the sound of hundreds of people talking and cheering in the Great Hall and feel a tap on your shoulder and see the two people you sat with in the train, Hermione an Ron, who you didn't think liked you that much, standing there and hear Ron say "blimey, we thought you'd fallen in the lake or something" and hear Hermione say "where the heavens did you disappear to? and why do you look as if you've seen a ghost?" and have Peeves the ghost fly in through a wall at that moment and swoop down over the hears of your fellow students-to-be and look up open-mouthed as he performs a loop then dissapears through another wall and have Hermione say quietly "really Anon, you don't need to worry, I'm sure you'll end up in the right House. I'm sure we both will!" and have her smile and blush a little and avert her eyes as the doors open and Dumbledore shouts for the older students to stand and welcome the new yeargroup

Did anyone else feel like there was something fishy going on between Dante and Virgil? Dante is always talking about him in a really obsessive manner and Virgil's really touchy with him all the time. Yes, I know Virgil was Dante's idol and Virgil had to protect Dante at all costs and yes, the book was written in the Middle Ages, but still.
