How do you write something unsettling (rather than just scary)? When I'm watching a film like Mulholand Drive or A Clockwork Orange I sometimes get this unsettling/disturbing feeling like its uncomfortable to keep watching. How do I achieve this when I'm writing. It seems so much easier to do it with with films because you can show images, I get stuck writing this sort of stuff because so much in films does not translate into the written medium.

Pic related. It's a little unsettling but not in a 'loud', 'spooky' sort of way. I found it somewhere on this board I think, I don't remember what's happening in it.

Was thinking about this too. Like the dinner scene from Mulholland Drive, I think its hard to make that scene work in written form.

youre unsettled by david lynch because youre a pseud who is trying too hard to understand the meaning, yet your mind can tell it's all posturing. that feeling comes from the disjunction.

/mu/ loves to go on and on about "underground" hits that still have artistic merit. But we never do the same for books, until this thread.

I can make two suggestions for occult literature which nonetheless are stellar exercises in poetic prose: Yeats's A Vision and Thomas Browne's Urn-Burial.

there have been a few threads like this before, actually. Some anon in one of them recommended Ferdydurke and Insatiability. And now that I've read them I have to agree -- both, despite being relatively unknown, are excellent.

I'm inclined to agree with this. I hear many """""intellectuals""""" say Howl is but I thought that poem was actually garbage.

Something that's relatively comprehensive, decent standard translations and has a decent build quality.

Currently reading a Wordsworth Classics edition which is infuriatingly cheap. Would be nice to have something that will last after I've read it once.

James Joyce considered How Much Land Does A Man Need to be the world's greatest story.

I liked it, it's a parable though and it sort of reads like a kids book.
>>
>>8484732
Thanks but you misunderstood, I mean which book features the best collection of his work, not individual stories.

I'd agree, his writing comes across as didactic a lot of the time but the writing style and imagery is 10/10.

Have there been any good non-fiction works written on school shootings as a general phenomenon?

There was some really crappy pro-mass shooting book that came out in the 90s that analyzed a bunch of cases, but that was more around mass-shootings in general (I think it came out before Columbine).

It was called Postal, I think but I don't remember.

Do any of you guys have any book recommendations/tips for learning how to develop a keener eye for visual art, especially paintings? I've always wanted to understand visual art, but have never really understood how to. Of course, I still get emotional reactions from certain paintings, and one can say that this emotional reaction itself is an "understanding" of a sort, but I also want to develop a more concrete, technical sort of understanding.

Buy an intro to art history book. Read it. Go from there. Google: prominent contemporary art critics and historians. Google: art museums near me. Go there. Too far? Read more books then.
