Is it really necessary to read Greek mythology before reading the philosophers? Why or why not? Are there concepts one will miss unless they have a background of mythology and history of Greece?

start with the greeks is a meme no one actually reads those books
>>
>>8482658
It's just like the bible, it doesn't hurt to know them. You'll understand where a lot of modern stuff has its roots. And understanding is always good. And yes, it might make you understand greek philosophers a bit better, although I don't think it's really necessary.

Homer is all you really need. Herodotus is actually a very comfy read that suffers the indignity of translation much better than Homer does IMO.

Charlotte love, it's not you I like, but your thighs. If I could separate you from your thighs, and take them home with me, I'd call your thighs: Paige, and I'd love them dearly more than I could ever love you. But for the time being, I love you too.

So I was starting my English 1201 class, to which we write introductory essays on the form of a narrative essay on one of our life experiences.

I write mine, all's going well, and then the professor checks it.."Wow, Anon, this essay's amazing, I guess your previous course helped you out a lot" she says, in her typical British accent.

>She doesn't know the entire reason why I got better at writing is because I wanted to 1-up the writing in my ERPs on google docs.
>tfw your writing improvement can only be attributed to porn

Probably this.
Been in the same situation a few times, might just be my inability to perceive praise as genuine, or that my half assed effort, was more than anyone else bothered to put in.

This. In my high school English classes I always got C's or low B's on all my papers. Then in college for all my classes that writing is involved the teacher can't seem to stop sucking my dick over my writing.

I honestly view my writing as unorganized without a unifying idea. It seems like I write whatever comes to mind and I find relevant. But for some reason I college the teacher's always give me A's when in high school the same paper would've gotten me a C.

Balzac anon here, if anyone cares to remember.

So I went through and purchased the full set for just over 200 (with shipping). They're absolutely gorgeous, I love them.

However they're very very delicate, some of the covers are peeling a bit and could fall off I think. (Pic is them, though not my photo.)

The condition is fine, though I worry I paid too much for them.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any advice for taking care of them as I read them (any common pit falls or odd ways I may be destroying them). That would be a big help, I'll post pictures some time next week (in the middle of moving) if anyone is interested.

War and Peace, a significant plot point but not the focus.

YA and a critical eye is probably a goldmine but I don't have any specific recommendations.

From the little I've checked out, it's along the lines of choosing the right industry to focus on, generally manufacturing. He basically says that the easiest route to a wealthy state is to promote stateside manufacturing instead of primary industry, such as China's development from preindustrial agricultural society before WW2 to the economic powerhouse of today, while many shitty europoor countries remain economically stagnant for hundreds of years despite long-term access to automation, etc. Or something like that. I'm a geologist, not a economist

"It is useless to argue about polygamy, it must be taken as a fact existing everywhere, the mere regulation of which is the problem to be solved. Where are there, then, any real monogamists? We all live, at any rate for a time, and the majority of us always, in polygamy. Consequently, as each man needs many women, nothing is more just than to let him, nay, make it incumbent upon him to provide for many women. By this means woman will be brought back to her proper and natural place as a subordinate being, and the lady, that monster of European civilisation and Christian–Teutonic stupidity, with her ridiculous claim to respect and veneration, will no longer exist; there will still be women, but no unhappy women, of whom Europe is at present full. The Mormons’ standpoint is right."

"With girls, Nature has had in view what is called in a dramatic sense a “striking effect,” for she endows them for a few years with a richness of beauty and a, fulness of charm at the expense of the rest of their lives; so that they may during these years ensnare the fantasy of a man to such a degree as to make him rush into taking the honourable care of them, in some kind of form, for a lifetime—a step which would not seem sufficiently justified if he only considered the matter. Accordingly, Nature has furnished woman, as she has the rest of her creatures, with the weapons and implements necessary for the protection of her existence and for just the length of time that they will be of service to her; so that Nature has proceeded here with her usual economy. Just as the female ant after coition loses her wings, which then become superfluous, nay, dangerous for breeding purposes, so for the most part does a woman lose her beauty after giving birth to one or two children; and probably for the same reasons."

It's about a pedophile man who eventually gets hiw own little girl and travel around the USA with her.

This was the phoniest book I've ever read, it really was. For one part it made me feel really depressed, I don't know why, but it did. Old J.D. really killed me with his writting. He writtes all this corny stuff about being young and all. For Chrissake, half the time he was being very lousy, and boy, that get to my nerves. I swear to god, this was even phonier than the movies for Chrissake. After a while you get used to it though. It's not like I feel sore about it, but it really got me thinking and all. What a terrific bore.

Hey /lit/, I'm writing a novel and want your input.

Is this trite/overused?

> scene introducing minor antagonist
> m.a. boards protagonist's ship
> dialogue between m.a. and p.
> one of m.a.'s lackeys laughs at p's comeback
> m.a. plays along with lackey
> m.a. devolves into hysterical, maddening laughter
> m.a. sucker-punches lackey

I'm wondering if the whole "bad guy beats up his own henchman" trope is overused. It seems too easy as a means of conveying how dangerous the villain is.

yeah thats real shit n overplayed tbqh senpai

i know you've probably seen breaking bad, so think about how the writers portrayed gus fring. the real dangerous people are the people that know they shouldnt act in ways that would mark them as dangerous.

here's a toast to you developing a character past flatness.
>>
>>8482132
Yeah, I feel I've seen this exact scene somewhere before...

And I don't know, if your intention is to convey how dangerous the villain is, then doing so in a humorous scene like that doesn't really work. Because it's mainly just stupid and laughable, and makes the villain and his forces look like non-threatening idiots. This kind of thing only fits a pirate movie for children.
