How do you folks like Under The Skin?
The book of course, but talk about the film is welcome too.

How are the other books about Michel Faber good too? I've only read this one by him, but it's probably one of my most favorite sci-fi stories.

oof, I meant "How are the other books by Michel Faber?"
>>
>>8789859
Is the book worth reading for someone who loved and was kind of obsessed with the film, and who ranks it among the best of the century so far, alongside TWBB and Mulholland Dr. etc.?
>>
>>8789890
The book is more conventional in storytelling than the movie. It has way more plot, and is actually quite different from the film. It's a scifi story about aliens being presented as humans, and actual humans as cattle. A story about seeing things from other perspectives, or something like that...

It's very good, but very different from the film. I'd suggest it if you like science fiction that isn't genre trash.

Chapter 1: An Announcement

Of voter's disobedience and the fall
Of royal blood whose vict'ry was assured
From Wall Street down to Pennsylvania Ave,
Her crown confirmed, till one man tall and thick
Stepped from his lonely castle, and emerged
The champion of the long election year
Which rippled chaos out to distant shores
Sing Heav'nly Muse, the tale of Underdog
With memes reverberating through our souls,
Our prideful television host transformed
Into our nation's host. What drove these two
To fight with such a fury? It was us,
T'was me and you, our feast upon the news,
Our overdose - Amer'can's love a show.

Sing muse, of Neil Young's timeless voice that day
That Trump descended cooly from upstairs
With stunning Slavish wife at his right side
And both thumbs pointing upwards to the stars.
A salmon tangerine exterior
With monstrous build and bright blue eyes to boot,
He said we need to make Amer'ca great
And great again it would become in time.
The Mexicans, he said, are criminals,
They're rapists, murderers, and job takers,
The Chinese leaders are quite smart, he said,
Quick on their feet with trade deals, debt, and war.
Our politicians are invertebrates
Compared to canny leaders from afar,
They send their worst into our humble towns
And we just take them all without regard
For common folk and real Americans
Upon whose backs the work of men is done.
They send the lowest of their hooligans
To rabble rouse our righteous souls anew
And take our jobs, our women and, our rights,
Our sacred rights which, passed down from our sires,
incur offenses daily from without.

He spoke of cars, of manufacturing jobs
Sent overseas by vile Clinton laws
Which to this day have torn from modest men
Their livelihood and dignity and means
Of living simply in our honest land
At factories and workshops coast to coast,
From Madison Wisconsin up to Maine,
To Reno, Amarillo, New Orleans,
From Lexington Kentucky to the Burg
To Witchita, Fort Collins and St. George.

He spoke of ISIS stealing the crude oil
Which by divine authority is due
To no-one except these United States,
Our soldiers died for nothing afterall.
He spoke of all our idiotic men
And women who would give the enemy
The time and place of battle weeks before
Our troops had ever left their wife and kids.

He spoke of unemployment on the rise
And weak recovery from our country's slump
Of yesteryear when bankers in New York
Convened to take a wild risk with loans
To unsound purchasers of hefty homes.
After the bubble burst it was Barrack,
The polished politician who was friends
With Michael Froman, Citigroup exec,
Who chose the whole of Barry's cabinet,
Yes it was our Barrack, our hope and change,
Who stole our cash and gave it to the Jew.

After his speech was over it was clear
To all the pundits in the media
That Trump was solid gold - comedic gold,
And laughter boomed throughout the cable news.
Jon Stewart and his cohorts on TV
Rejoiced, for they knew not what was in store
Next year - they focused only on their mirth
With howling giggles heard 'round the wide world.
Another John, with surname Oliver
Had urged the Don to run, he begged the man
To run, please "Do it, do it, do it, please
I'll even write for you a campaign check
From us, the liberal media, we want laughs,
We don't want you to be our president
But we can't wait for you to run, do it."

The ratings for his speech went through the roof
And cable news executives were proud
Of their newest creation which was born
That day. A billionaire with golden locks
Which flowed from back to front then back again
Who promised then to make America great
Was just a joke to media far and wide
Across the world, a joke to bring in views,
The youtube views, the search results that claimed
To have the latest updates from the man
Himself, a direct link from twitter feed
To mainstream media's TV spectacles.
The Chairman Les Moonves of CBS
With newfound money flowing, said it so:
"It may not be good for America
But it's damn good for CBS." He knew
Not of the coming revolution then,
But in due time he'd come to know it well,
He knew not of the plight of common men
And hardships putting common men in pain,
He only knew his ratings grew in size
With numbers that he'd never seen before.

And so a sleeping giant had begun
To wake. Encouraged by our faithless press
To wake, to rise, to revolutionize
Our politics. And liberals near and far
Had clapped his entrance, they had seen the end
Of right-wing policies once and for all,
But still the giant stirred without consent
Of the elitist press, he open'd his eyes
And changed immortally the way we see
Our country, changed the way we see our flag,
Our working class, the way we see our vets.
A sleeping giant took a tiny step
That day, but it was one of many steps
That one day men of future times and lands
Will see as giant leaps for man at large.

Let me preface by saying that I haven't read any books I haven't absolutely had to, i.e. high school-required or suggested material.

I picked up two books this evening, Catch-22 and A Farewell to Arms. I plan to pick up Brothers Karamazov and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Which one would /lit/ say is an easier read? Which is more engaging?

I have aphantasia, a poor memory and more often than not have trouble following plots, even in film. Can anyone relate? How does it affect your reading?

A Farewell to Arms is an easy read.
>>
Read Catch-22, then read All Quiet on the Western Front. They're pretty light and will prepare you for some hard-reading material like Brothers Karamazov.
>>

Already read the first volume, lots of gibberish and running in circles. Really captures the feeling of the process well but isn't that descriptive.

www.ideologylit.com

Ideology is accepting submissions for our third issue.

We consider all unpublished poetry and prose. Each issue also has a sort of "competition," centered around its theme. The best submission(s) that feature this theme will headline the issue.

The theme of the third issue is "The Future."

Why not submit and give it a go?

>What is this?
Ideology is an online literary journal that consists of unsolicited submissions.

>Is this the first literary journal from /lit/?
No. There's been others in the past, perhaps most notably TAR: The April Reader which ran for three years and 22 issues.

Is it possible to become more intelligent through proper training, or can the brain only become more and more debilitated (e.g. through substance abuse and illness)?

No spook discussion, please.

Don't delete this thread, janitors and mods, it's within the rules Hiro outlined.

There are principally two things killing /lit/ that no one is addressing;

1. Threads which have no relation to /lit/ e.g. "What is purpose?" and "Is x drug /lit/?"

2. Beginner threads e.g. "Is this worth reading?" "What does /lit/ think of x?" and "What is some x literature?"

In order to restore /lit/ to its former glory, every single thread which breaks these rules must be deleted and a message given to the poster saying "not /lit/" or "read the sticky"

I suggest the janitors start doing their job and implement fascist order (who cares if the threads decrease) and institute a culture of high quality posts.

And before any newfags or people from Ribbit start crying, kill yourselves!
