What does /lit/ think about the Dresden Files series?
>>9062968
i dont know i read the first one when i was like 12. one of my sisters friends left behind like 8 dresden books and theyve been sitting on my shelf collecting dust.
not sure what to do with them.
>>9062968
Essentially, they are The Hardy Boys but with magic.
>>9062968
I honestly don't know if Jim Butcher is just a manchild who thinks Dresden is actually cool, or a decent writer who intentionally made Dresden stagnate emotionally at 16 due to trauma. I doubt it though. Still, it's infuriating. SHUT UP ABOUT MARCONE. JUST WORK WITH HIM YOU STUPID FUCKING CHILD.
Okay /lit/, I'm trying to pick up reading again, I used to love it (but am definitely pleb tier) and I've had a bit more down time to do so lately.
I have three books with me at university: Steppenwolf, A Confederacy of Dunces, and Dune. All of them seem interesting enough. Which should I read and why?
making an obvious choice by literally posting a pic of which one you wanted to read, eh? HESSE
>>9062962
I did really like Siddhartha. Figured this board wouldn't be as into sci-fi, though everyone says Dune is THE sci-fi book, and Steppenwolf does seem the most interesting in terms of ideas. But I also read the first 50 pages or so of Confederacy a while ago and was laughing my ass off.
In any case you're probably right.
>>9062969
dune is great. there's gene wolfe but i have yet to read him. i guess sci fi will get bumped up in literary heirarchy for the years to come since we are literally in it. also this is a catholic marxist board or was.
>mrw normies think they're library composing of stephanie meyer, harry potter and god knows what else garbage demands the same level of respect that my library of heidegger, satre, kant and others does.
why do normies have no respect anymore? I wouldn't go and say to nietzsche or James Joyce (who fucking learned Danish to read the plays of henrik ibsen) that I have an equal or even similar aptitude for reading as them.
show some damn respect.
>>9062907
>bait
>>9062907
cut all contact and move on op
>>9062907
It has been quite a while since I have witnessed bait of such an unappealing quality.
OP I respect your lack of effort in making such a lackluster topic, but I must mention that in order to gain more of a reaction from me personally, please try harder to irritate me with your opinions.
What are some other books that are liberal arts college as fuck? Anyone who went to state school need not respond.
Bump, any other ideas /lit/?
Rules of attraction by Bret Easton Ellis
My illiterate dad has just said that we should read poetry
>out loud
>standing
>being serious
what a loser
Seems like you're the illiterate one in that conversation, OP.
>>9062879
I disagree but I am open for interpretations
>>9062873
Damn Picasso was so fucking good
redpill me on charles dickens
>>9062858
Take the bluepill in this case. He's a very entertaining author with a wonderful prose style and a great imagination for characters and settings. Pretty much every one of his novels is at least very good.
Also don't fall for the "paid by the word" meme. He was paid per installment.
Fuckwick club was quite amusing
>>9062919
yeah, this frustrates me a little. the guy was a genius. though, david copperfield was way too fucking long.
Are there ANY contemporary books worth reading these days?
Everything seems like irredeemable shit
>seems like
Based on what?
>>9062847
Junot Diaz; Zadie Smith
>>9062859
Based on reading contemporary pieces and the current climate of literature
Post more pics like this
>>9062837
No. Go fuck yourself weeb
Agreed
>>9062837
>start reading
>asleep in 10 minutes
>go to sleep
>awake 10 minutes later with a book in hand
>>9062836
u have to masturbate, make some food, eat it while watching some netflix show, then pick up the book and chip away
>>9062836
Don't read in your bed. You have to find a spot that is comfortable, but not one which your body associates with sleep.
Find a good chair or couch.
Any philosophers or essays on media besides Walter Benjamin/Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction? He's really the only toe I've dipped into that area. I've heard mixed things about McLuhan
Any recs?
>>9062825
There is tons and tons of literature on propaganda.
Got 500 dollars?

>>9062825
mcluhan is the foundation for this type of inquiry and is absolutely essential
>>9062825
>I've heard mixed things about McLuhan
What do you even mean? Are you suggesting you wouldn't read a seminal work because some people disagree with it or dislike it?
Can lit give me the rundown of this book.
>>9062800
quick or thorough?
>>9062805
I want to grasp the validity of its content before I purchase it.
I don't want a neo-nazi spin.
Or an over sensitive liberal view either.
>>9062800
A bad hoax that worked
What books do i need to read to understand all of Ulysses? All the references, allusions, themes etc
You don't need any. Ulysses will help you understand all the other books rather than the other way round.
Well, you could go either 2 ways: you could just pick up a book that analyses the content or you could spend years reading philosophy and similar works.
>>9062767
Yeah i kinda meant before reading Ulysses. Like as i'm reading it i'm already understanding the references.
So I just finished studying this semon demon's works. Am I done now?
>he hasn't read PI, OC and CV LMAO
>>9062776
>he didn't correctly read my post LMAO
>>9062778
You clearly haven't if you have to ask "Am I done now?"
In other words, you didn't get it.
Did Pynchon really have a cameo in that movie?
>>9062750
Really?
>>9062755
yes
I've got a question. In this debate Chomsky and Foucault at a certain point almost collaborate on their ideas of reality and, though I haven't watched this in a while, describe it as fields
What the fuck are they talking about here. Is this an image each of them use to conceptualize reality, like with the utility and conceptuality of a flowchart for example?
https://youtu.be/3wfNl2L0Gf8?t=15m38s
>what did they mean by this
>Hep a doo a dippy woo woo wowa wee a flippy floo
That's what you sound like OP.
Congrats, you fell for the meme.
you dont speak dutch?
