I always see this held up as being really good but no one actually says why.

Is this just a meme book or is it actually good?

I was in solitary confinement for a while once. It fucking sucks. It made me realize that books were just some guy sitting in your room telling you shit, but from really far away, and sometimes from beyond the grave in a decidedly spooky manner. Being alone sucks, man. But it's interesting, you can't really be alone, taking a page from another thread, everything that surrounds you is just a piece of someone else, sitting alone in your room? that desk is made by someone, it's a phantom of a promise that there is still some permanence to the social world that you can potentially return to. Even nature has a creeping feeling of a personality.
>>
>>9059125
You must be a really uninteresting person then.
Also you sound shizo.

I doubt I'm schizophrenic, that seems like it would have come up. No, I'm fairly interesting, do cool things, think cool things, but everyone has their limit locked in a small room for days and days and days, afforded no tools, just food and water, occasional book you read 4-5 times, no pen or paper, since you're in solitary, too dangerous. how many times can you sing all the songs you know? how many hours can you contemplate your navel? it all sounds like fun and games until you're in the thick of it, my friend.

>How does one improve one's poetry interpretation skills?

Read every word carefully, try to understand and see the reason and value of every word chosen.
>>
>>9059080
Basically the same way one improves any other skill. Get an intro to poetry textbook and read it. The practice

Maybe finish learning English before you start something harder.
>>
>latin
>ancient
But it's not? It was in active use by literary academia and science and only fell out of fashion ~200 years ago
>Greek has the cool alphabet, mysterious alhpabet
Greek's alphabet is extremely similar to latin/romance. If you want a cool alphabet you should look at arabic or korean
>>
Latin has been kept alive by the pure power of pseuds wanting to sound smart. It is the only choice

How do I get over the mindset that reading a translation is not worth it? I feel like i'm getting the information second hand and that the translation has probably butchered the book.

What are some good websites to visit regularly?
I feel like joining a forum or something, but at the same time there is something about the anonymity you can get here that just eliminates the need to impress or withhold.
Are there any other websites you visit regularly?

I'm interested in books, philosophy (mostly christianity at the moment), some gardening and botany.

I started a book club /lit/, since i couldnt find any in my area. we got about eight people and our first book is orwells burmese days.
do any of you belong to any literary associations outside of this board?
what are they like? i havent run a book club before, so if anyone has any advice i'd like to hear it.

i don't belong to a book club but burmese days is one of my favourites by Orwell
>>
>>9058598
Thanks for this thread, OP. I just ordered Burmese Days. As an Indian i am ashamed to say there is not much of Orwell being taught in Indian schools. So, taking inspiration from you, i have started a book club in my building. Good Luck to You as well. I guess the idea would be to let people read at their own pace and wait for everyone to catch up. I don't want to rush anyone because reading Orwell for the first time is a once in a lifetime experience.
>>
>>9058734
Glad to hear it! I'm in australia. is Orwell popular or influential in india?
I've read a bit of rudyard kiplings books, especially Kim, which i like a lot.

She was pretty huge in the early 90s, though. And the lack of respect she elicits is due to her political views more than anything else.
