And here it is. The ol' AK or AR thread.
I've rekindled my interest in firearms as of late. I'm looking to buy an auto rifle. Problem is, I am far from wealthy. I want a rifle that is reliable, easy to maintain, and MUST be under 800 USD. It will be used for fun, but main idea is a SHTF situation. I am no mega gun enthusiast, nor do I think that I will be some uber commando or even live that long in a SHTF situation. However, I do want a fighting chance to protect my family. I want something I can grab, abuse, and go boom when I pull the trigger.
I keep coming back to the AK due to it's simplicity and proven track record.
I've narrowed it down to the Century Arms C39V2 (I know Century isn't usually that great, but this rifle has got tons of positive feedback with a milled receiver). The ARs I'm looking at are S&W MP Sport II or Windham Dissapator.
I do not plan on doing any tacticool shit, I would rather put that money towards ammo. I'm fine with gorilla taping my streamlight flashlight to it as apposed to spending 200 bucks on picatinny and a light if necessity told me I needed a light.

What defines a assault rifle?

I am mostly curious about assault weapons. What defines "assault" weapons?
I personally believe any weapon that can engage multiple targets before needing to reload and has the option of firing full auto is a assault weapon. Actually... Maybe full auto anything could be considered assault weapon?

A rifle, in my opinion, is just a weapon with a certain barrel length too unwieldy for usage with one hand (A pistol).
A sub-machine gun/ carbine are weapons too unwieldy for one hand but do not have a barrel length long enough to be considered a rifle.

Ar sucks at long range tho. Im shooting in 1000yd prone matches. And to be competitive I have a custom rem700 action etc. Most are target rifles are more expensive than my setup but suck. Just look at the leaderboards. Aks are fine for what they are. But ars are just overhyped by fanboys who think 223 is good.

/k/ I got a concealed carry permit and I need to know of a small pistol that still has enough stopping power to stop the never ending shitstorm of muggers where I go to work at late night. I have pretty high price range (up to $1250) and will buy extra mags and a holster. I need it to be compact yet strong and have a clipsize of maybe 5 or more bullets. What ya guys got? So /k/, I have been looking into getting my CC permit but was having worries about how I'mm actually go about doing it.
The only handgun I own is a fullsized Springfield XD 9mm. How uncomfortable is it to iwb carry something of that size? Is it worth it to buy something lime a Shield that's so much smaller? When I open carry, I just use a belt holster at 3 o clock, so I figured for cc I'd do the same position, just iwb. Good idea or no?

Im a 5.10 Auschwitz reinactor And I CCa CZ-52 IWB at about 11 O'clock.
Due to my super skinny frame, it is a challenge to CC things IWB without Exaggerated printing. and it is impossible to do so on my hip.
For example, in the same position, my CZ-52 prints LESS than my G19 due to it being thinner. it is significantly longer however, so on occasion it is uncomfortable to have a CZ-52 jabbing just above your groin when you bend over.

OP, you want something like an alien gear holster, worn at 5:30, I carry both an XDS45 and XD and they both disappear under a decent shirt. Wearing it in an area like 3 o'clock will make you print like a motherfucker. Alien gear holsters are pretty decent, and run about 30 bucks, perfect for the poorfag on a budget. Don't ever wear a 'soft' cc holster, they will make you ND into your leg and die a stupid, stupid death.

I carry a Canik TP9SA in a kydex AIWB holster. I'm not a big guy and it disappears effortlessly. Keep in mind, a good belt is necessary for full size concealment as well as dressing around your gun.

A few years ago I was in an armory and found a very old AR-pattern riflr. It's lack of forward assist, slabside recieved, pronged flash hider and triangular grip made me think it was an M16, but on the receiver was stamped "COLT GOVT MODEL AR-15".
