FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

>>2581063
>what is google?
Reminder that if you pander for likes/shares/(You)s/etc. and the like, rather than doing art because you love making it, you should fucking end yourself you back-patting whore.

I feel that anime/manga is only popular because of the mid 80s and 90s generation of people. Nowadays kids think anime is gay and would rather watch minecraft streams or whatever kids like these days. The oversimplification of western cartoons is popular with kids today due to adventure times success. In other words animes popularity ends with the millennials.
>>2581043
#2 as a sidenote what I used to do was ask kids what their fav anime is in younow streams and the response is always - "anime is for losers" or "I don't watch anime" or "I tried watching anime and like, I don't like it" etc
>>2581047
Anime appeals too teenagers really, wait till they hit 13/14 and they will get into it.
I'm a "millennial" and I didn't watch it until that age.
How does one tell if an artist is either sheltered or from a low income area? Is it the simplicity or that they 'copy-paste' ideas?
>>2580988
omg stop
wut
Do you mean if they come from an academic/art-aware background or not? Just ask them?
Why don't more people of color draw? Why is this hobby crowded with just white people?
>>2580793
what the fuck are you talking about, more than half of /ic/ who posted pics of themselves online aren't white
>>2580793
>with just white people?
There are quite a few hispanic artists and lots of asian artists though. I suppose when you say people of color, you mean black people?
>>2580793
>Confirmation bias
I HATE when my eyes get far better than my skills...
I see all the errors and don't know/have the hand to fix them

What's going on d/ic/k heads?
Any of you guys know of some great Dinosaur artists I can follow on twitter or tumblr? I was on Abiogenesis but unfollowed him when I couldnt take all the feminism crap he talked about any more. Concept or official, it doesn't matter, just as long as they are good.
Do memes count?

>>2580745

Put in sincere effort.
In your opinion, who was the best surrealist painter? Dali? Miró? Ernst? Tell me.
dunno but I like Geddes
>>2581257
That looks good and weird but I wouldn't really call it surrealist
>>2581261
What's not surreal bout it? Beskinksi is my pick.
>buy 5 pack of pen nibs
>all 5 get worn down in a week
What the fuck.
>>2580670
Maybe stop shoving them up your butt? Would you like to reorder a pack of 10 white nibs? I'll use my employee discount just for you.
>>2580670
r-r-r-retard strength
I've been using the same spring nib for years and it still works fine. What are you doing to your poor tablet?
What tips do you have to improve drawings without reference?
just keep drawing without reference, no shit. what did you expect?
draw with emotions and let your mind go blank. Or just go totally blank, start drawing simple shapes and see where it goes.
You could try making unnatural hand movements.
>>2580657
>drawing from reference
look at the reference more than your drawing
>drawing from imagination
look at the drawing more than your reference
if you do it that way, you'll retain the form a lot better than the first way
have any of you experienced a dream when you solved an art related problem in your sleep?
on 2 occasions this has happened to me, one where i was painting this epic forest scenery in front of me in a dream, and it almost seemed to go in real time.
another was when i was at a market and i got a crit on my drawing of a face from a salesman. it was a problem i was trying to fix the whole day before and fuck me it it literally improved my faces overnight.
i'm currently working on trying to lucid dream, hoping i can make these kind of dreams more regular.
>>2580538
Ask /x/ how to.
Just, really, really try to ignore the other "astral" shit they post.
>>2580538
Well shit OP I might just do the same
How do you lucid dream?
>>2580538
lucid dreaming does help with it
i mean when you think about it your mind is capable of cataloging so much detail down to people's faces and architecture accurately enough to portray it back to you in your dreams
if you can tap into that then you can do anything really
This is a thread for screengrabs from books, tutorials and videos on the subject of "weight" with regards to visual art.
It's a subject I rarely see come up, but is perhaps as valuable a topic as the more ubiquitous perspective, gesture and anatomy. Without a sense of gravity or "weight" in either a drawing, painting or an animation the sense of reality is lost with figures and objects that appear to "float" listlessly amongst their surroundings. In this thread let's discuss this esoteric concept of weight and try and help each other understand it better, and practice utilizing this concept in simple pieces of artwork.
>>2580297
To be honest I don't really think it's something you need to train specifically it's just something to keep in mind as you compose the figure or composition, it should come naturally as you get better at gesture, anatomy, perspective. etc All of these things are training you to see in 3D the better you get, the clearer the picture is in your mind. All that stuff Vilppu says about feeling the pose, the idea is to just imagine yourself doing a pose picture how your weight would be distributed, if you're holding something then where is the centre of balance of the thing you are holding and how is your body reacting in order to accommodate the weight, imagine you're looking at someone else doing the same pose, look in the mirror and observe, take note of how gravity affects clothing etc do anything you can in order to help develop a clearer picture in your mind.

i feel as though i'm on the moon, and the image is just a hole in my monitor
>>2580282
"When asked about the 'grey and black' paintings, he said, quite simply, that they were about death. They are desolate, empty images, but they also afford a richly ambiguous visual experience. Their landscape-like qualities, with the black at the top — an Arctic wasteland under a vast and empty sky — is at the same time more deathlike."
What about this one?
>>2580295
simiar feeling. though rather than a hole in my monitor it's more like a window peering into another room.
keep posting this is fascinating
