The Reformation.

Was there a more Alpha male in history?

>Be lanky, bad smelling neckbeard Russian peasant.
>Rose from humble peasant background to the Royal Russian court,
>Fucked almost every woman he wanted,
>Literally cucked Tzar Nicholas by banging the Tzarina
>People who fucked with him were done for.
>Literally waved his cock out of the palace window laughing 'this rules Russia!'.
>Took a ridiculous number of attempts to kill him

Can /his/ name a more Alpha historical figure?

Maybe this isn't the right board for this, but this has been a question I can't get answered. So from what I understand; Human ancestors were primarily nomadic herbivores. The Ice Age came and forced them to adapt, giving them intelligence. Then the Ice Age ended and they started farming and so on. My question is; Why do we think that life on other planets would have required complex thought in the first place? It seems to work fine for all of the other animals so why do we think something as rare as us pops up all around?

So how did you get into history, /his/?
Where/when did you start?

>School teaches what felt like a weird and biased version of NI Troubles
>Start reading about it myself
>Read a few books and figure out which papers were and weren't biased too much
>Learn about The Troubles
>Learn about Ulster's history
>Then research Ireland's history
>Then Britain
>Then Europe

By no means well versed, but like to imagine I have an approximate knowledge of a lot of things. Don't intend to actually take a degree or anything, nor do I think I'll ever be considered an expert, but I do just fucking love reading interesting shit about history.

As a small kid I loved pictured encyclopedias, they were so bloody cool, I admit I loved them originally for pictures but by age 10 I had read 4-5 encyclopedias full and full.

Amazingly I still remember so much from those first books I read and it set a big hunger for knowledge in me.

When I was a small child I thought dinosaurs were cool and I thought dinosaurs were history. Turns out they aren't but I still fucking loved it, it helped that my school history teacher was awesome, he was one of those guys who manage to have a perfect balance between informative and interesting with a lot of flavor trivia. Plus I've always thought learning about the past and how we all ended up in this situation is pretty damn important.

Who built the megalithic structures in the pacific? On Malden island, which has no trees, no fresh water, and no natives upon European arrival, there are stone temples and basalt roads that run straight into the ocean. So who built them? I find this subject really interesting, pic is of Nan Madol ruins on Pohnpei, the 'pacifc venice'.

Polynesian settlers. They had sunk wells, which have since become dry/brackish, so it seems there had been a fresh water aquifer.

Tell me why Nietzsche wasn't the greatest philosopher of all time.

Protip: you can't.

>I know my fate. One day my name will be associated with the memory of something tremendous — a crisis without equal on earth, the most profound collision of conscience, a decision that was conjured up against everything that had been believed, demanded, hallowed so far. I am no man, I am dynamite.

When did Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Hinduism disappear from Central Asia (modern "stans")? They certainly must have lingered for some time after the Muslim conquest. Was it Timur who finally destroyed them?

Robert Brasillach is a fascinating figure.

For those unaware, he was an intellectual who openly held Fascist sympathies in Vichy France expressed in the newspaper Je suis partout which he edited. Infamously, he was executed by the state for his role as editor, which included publishing the names and addresses of various Jews and members of La Resistance. He later spent his time promoting collaboration and German victory, and also called for the execution of political opponents in his paper. His execution is controversial because his crimes, rather than militaristic or political, were intellectual, raising serious questions about the role of speech in wartime and the degree which one could be held culpable for the content of one's words.

On one hand, he called for the execution/deportation of thousands of people. He wasn't a passive agent who merely spoke his mind. He backed up his calls for execution by literally doxxing the Jews and dissenters during that time. On the other hand, other collaborators guilty of similar crimes were given meager sentences while he faced the highest possible penalty.

So tell me. How culpable do you believe Brasillach was? Were his deeds worthy of execution? Would you have acquitted Brasillach? Tried him for crimes against humanity the same way you would a military general?

>>
>>1421848
Who were the similar criminals?

I wouldn't have executed any of them, I would have put them in prisons, thrown away the keys and see what happens. Not because they're fascists, but because what they did resulted in innocent people being executed.

If they get killed in their for being traitors in the prisons, so be it, and the same goes for if they don't.
>>
>>1421848
He did basically the job of an informator. I dont see intellectual work about those deeds. Maybe about the rest of what he did, but denuncing people is sure not an intellectual work.

It's not because someone is labelled, or an intellectual overall, that all he does is intellectual work.
>>
>>1421848
Aiding genocide is a heinous crime and those other collaborators should have been given harsher sentences.

The handling of the Rwandan genocide was quite exemplary: People such as Kabuga, Ruggiu and Bemeriki who were involved with RTLM, the radio responsible for broadcasting calls for genocide and giving out the position of groups of Tutsi to massacre, were charged with complicity in genocide or public incitement to commit genocide and ended up in prison (except for those still on the run.)

I hate this meme.

Germany was a constitutional monarchy like Britain. The Kaiser did not make the laws. They had a parliament that did that. He was not the executive head of the government. That was the Chancellor. His power as Kaiser was essentially the same as the Queen's power in Britain. They formally approve of and dismiss the Chancellor/Prime Minister.

The worst that can be said of Wilhelm II is that he was a boob. He loved extravagance and regality and pomp and ceremony. He loved Germany and its martial values. He was effusive and impetuous which often caused him & Germany embarrassment. (Kruger Telegram, Daily Telegraph Interview, Moroccan Crises)

But what was his real crime? Was he instrumental in the building of the navy which strained relations with Britain? Yes. Was it a blunder? Certainly. Does it qualify him as being the worst leader? Not even close.
