Three British ships and a US submarine that sank in the Java Sea during the second world war have been destroyed by illegal scrap metal scavengers, the Guardian can reveal.
The UK’s Ministry of Defence said it condemned the “unauthorised disturbance of any wreck containing human remains” and requested Indonesian authorities investigate and take “appropriate action”.
The commercial salvaging of war wrecks has caused significant upset among veterans, historians and governments who want to preserve the final resting place of sailors who went down with their ships.

Two young women who lived in the same house and who both had an infant son came to Solomon for a judgment. One of the women claimed that the other, after accidentally smothering her own son while sleeping, had exchanged the two children to make it appear that the living child was hers. The other woman denied this and so both women claimed to be the mother of the living son and said that the dead boy belonged to the other.
After some deliberation, King Solomon called for a sword to be brought before him. He declared that there was only one fair solution: the live son must be split in two, each woman receiving half of the child. Upon hearing this terrible verdict, the boy's true mother cried out, "Oh Lord, give the baby to her, just don't kill him!" The liar, in her bitter jealousy, exclaimed, "It shall be neither mine nor yours—divide it!"
The king declared the first mother as the true mother, as a true, loving mother would rather surrender her baby to another than hurt him, and gave her the baby. As punishment for theft her woman, he had her sent to the royal barracks to labour on her back. King Solomon's judgment became known throughout all of Israel and was considered an example of profound wisdom.

You know, I've always wondered about this story. What kind of psychopath would just think to herself, "Eh, fuck it, it's not really my baby anyway -- just go ahead and chop it up."
I'm pretty sure I'd just let them have the fucking baby, whoever's it was.
Ancient Israeli women were crazy bitches, apparently.

Be aware of the nature of things and use that knowledge with logic to pursue truth. King Solomon was aware of the nature of a mother and knew how a mother would react if he proposed the child be chopped in two and each piece given to each of them. Knowing this he could deduce who was the true mother and who was the liar from their reaction. And as a result, was able to return the child to his true mother.
The fuck was his problem?

Why must everything be about politics with the RCC?
Roman Empire
>the Church must work with the empire
Middle Ages
>the Church must be independent of the empire and wield temporal powers of her own
Renaissance-Early Modern Era
>the Church must withhold the divine right of kings
Post-French Revolution
>the Church must support every reactionary and pro-monarchic group in the world and denounce Marxism
Post-WWII
>the Church must help the proletariat break free from the shackels of the bourgeoisie
Present
>the Church must champion enviromentalism, social justice and gay marriage
Growing up in a majority Catholic country, I used to have deep reverence for these people. I used to think that a priest could not lie or sin. But now I see that they are nothing but power-hungry and opportunistic men. It's so clear that they have no principles and just jump on the latest politico-ideological bandwagon that comes around.
Religion is supposed to be about spiritual matters. Why can't these fuckers take care of spiritual business and leave politics to politicians?

Morality, as defined by a society, is ultimately subjective. Therefore whatever is "moral" or "just" is decided upon by the majority of society. The majority of society tends to be on the "right side of history."

Hey guys, uneducated ignorant American here. I recently realized how little I actually understand about current events outside America, and how little I know about current affairs. How does one find a good entry point for learning about the modern political climate of the world? Ive beem watching videos on the Syria conflict as well as reading about our relations with Russia and the mid east, but holy shit its so overwhelming. Everytime I start to read about something, I just get 100 more questions than I had before. What do?

Continue doing what your doing now, then start working your way back until you reach the 1700s. After that just find a historical topic/era that interests you and study that.

Alright /his/, I picked this guy up from the library two days ago and I am a little over a hundred pages in, and my question is, would it be a waste of time to read all the way through it if I am still pretty new to philosophy? would it be better to read maybe phaedo, the republic, the apology, and some other essential dialogues and then move on to other philosophers or would it be recommended to read all through Plato's complete works before moving on to other philosophers?
Thanks in advance
