The British Empire was always going to separate but its successor states would be much more closely tied and would constitute a more important global power bloc.

Russia would transition to constitutional monarchy and probably end up something like the present day UK with devolved powers.

The US would consolidate power in he Americas much like it did in reality and would be something like China geopolitically, powerful but less assertive and influential culturally.

The European powers would be pretty varied, some would cling to Empire, others wouldn't.

A tiny backwater nation that still relies on slavery industrializes in a single generation and slowly takes over the entire Old World except for the UK and India, reducing their entire populations to chattel slavery with no substantial difficulties. The US spearheads an alliance against them and the two sides engage in a prolonged Cold War, only with much higher stakes, interrupted only by frequent sessions of lesbian sex.

What do you think would happen to places like France and Germany or The Ottomans and Japan?

>be British
>fight in irrelevant backwater theater of the Napoleonic Wars
>only opponents are severely outnumbered, under-supplied and demoralized second rate soldiers from the French Army
>have ample support from Spanish guerrillas
>run away from Napoleon at almost every turn
>only victories gained are by outnumbering the enemy
>get kicked out of the Peninsular several times
>eventually win after almost 6 years, and only because of the fuck up in the 1812 Invasion of Russia

Why did the British Army do so terribly in the Napoleonic Wars, especially compared to their Navy?

The British Army for a long period of time was really nothing special in terms of the European ground armies of the time and even in the next century. It was the normiest of all normie armies of the period.

Their colonial forces however were pretty competent, funnily enough, in comparison towards the army at home.

>The expression “scum of the earth” uttered by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, has become etched in history as a great commander's miserable opinion of his men. In a letter to Henry, Third Earl Bathurst, from Huarte Spain, on 2 July, 1813, Wellington wrote, “we have in the service the scum of the Earth as common soldiers.”

>His opinion did not change with time. On 4 November, 1813, he declared in a conversation with Philip Henry, Fifth Earl Stanhope, “I don't mean to say that there is no difference in the composition or therefore the feeling of the French army and ours. The French system of conscription brings together a fair sample of all classes; ours is composed of the scum of the Earth—the mere scum of the Earth. It is only wonderful that we should be able to make so much out of them afterward. The English soldiers are fellows who have enlisted for drink—that is the plain fact—they have all enlisted for drink.”

Do let me get this straight

Japan was one of the great powers of WW2, and yet they probably couldn't have beaten the Russian forces in the far east?

How laughable is that

Not very

The Japanese were strongest at sea, and though their army was large their doctrines were dated and their industry would have never been able to manufacture what was needed to keep the Soviet juggernaut at bay.
>>
>>1966835
>and though their army was large
"No." The casualties Germany took alone amounted to more than the living bodies that Japan could muster for the IJA.

>Argument with his house-surgeon. Was the red, pulsating tumour in a small boy's neck a straightforward abscess of the skin, or a dangerous aneurism of the carotid artery? 'Pooh!' Liston exclaimed impatiently. 'Whoever heard of an aneurism in one so young?' Flashing a knife from his waistcoat pocket, he lanced it. Houseman's note – 'Out leaped arterial blood, and the boy fell.' The patient died but the artery lives, in University College Hospital pathology museum, specimen No. 1256.

>Amputated the leg in 21⁄2 minutes, but in his enthusiasm the patient's testicles as well.

>Amputated the leg in under 21⁄2 minutes (the patient died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene; they usually did in those pre-Listerian days). He amputated in addition the fingers of his young assistant (who died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene). He also slashed through the coat tails of a distinguished surgical spectator, who was so terrified that the knife had pierced his vitals he dropped dead from fright. That was the only operation in history with a 300 percent mortality.

What the fuck was his problem?

A strain of life will propagate itself as far as it can numerically and geographically, in doing so diminishing or destroying strains which are not able to compete.
There is no disputing this fact. It is a fact regarding the very nature of life itself.

Why then is European colonialism a matter of such guilt?

If America decided tomorrow that they're God's Chosen People and The Greatest Nation On Earth and therefore has the right to nuke everyone, would you like that?

>>

America is factually speaking the greatest nation on Earth, and if god were real America is certainly in his favour right now.
There is no therefore. Righteousness is derived from authority, and authority is derived from power, and in regards to worldly power the US has the greatest.
If authority lies with the Lord of Isaac and Abraham, father of Christ, Allah, Jehovah, Jahweh, God, it is in full accordance with His divine will that one group should use their worldly power to dominate another, to take their cities, their lands and animal, to take from their number as slaves, and to impose their beliefs upon them.
Since their is no higher worldly power than America, and of those in America who believe in a power higher than the worldly believe overwhelmingly in the God who led Moses and the Jews from Egypt, yes, your assertion is correct, they have the right.

Unironically Operation: Iraqi Freedom. Most plebs would say Vietnam, but given the context that was Containment Theory, it was far more justified for the period.

Had Britain any reason to attack the Zanzibar Sultanate?

WW1 had plenty of causes and was absolytly justified from the view point of countries facing foreign aggression (Serbia, Belgium, France...)
>>

>Had Britain any reason to attack the Zanzibar Sultanate?
Ending the slave trade which was the stated purpose. Zanzibar was THE center of the slave trade after the transatlantic slave trade was shut down. More slaves went through Zanzibar in the 19th century than went to the whole of the Americas in the 16th through 18th centuries.

"Battleship at War" is a pretty good book I think. It follows the USS Washington which was one of the most decorated battleships the USN had that served pretty much from beginning to the end of the war.

When did the Romans stop reclining to eat? Is that something that went out with Christianity? Long before Constantine? Well into the Byzantine period?

>>
>>1966227
This isn't something you'll learn in history class, but the Roman patrician class reclined to eat because they cut the tendons of their women in childhood to keep them from straying too far outside the house/from their husbands (it was originally a Greek practice but it spread to Rome). It was a little like footbinding. So it literally caused their women pain to stand or sit for too long.

The practice was going out by the time the Republic transitioned into an Empire and was almost unknown by 100 AD.

I want to buy some (cheap) ancient coin for my /his/tory friend as a Christmas gift. I was thinking something Byzantine during an interesting period of the empire, but I don't really know where to look.

I've never dealt with historical coins before, but some of the stuff I find online is rather cheap. Are they actually legit?

Below is some Constantine era stuff I found.

https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.aspx?search=true&searchQuery=&searchQueryExclude=&searchCategory=315&searchCategoryLevel=4&searchCategoryAncient=True&searchCategoryUs=True&searchCategoryWorld=True&searchCategoryMedieval=False&searchBetween=0&searchBetweenAnd=0&searchDate=&searchUseThesaurus=True&searchDisplayCurrency=&searchDisplayAsList=False&searchIdStore=0&searchQueryAnyWords=&searchExactPhrase=&searchTitleAndDescription=True&searchDateType=0&searchMaxRecords=100&SearchOnSale=False&Unassigned=False&searchOrderBy=price_asc

Also, it doesn't have to be coins. I'm really looking to gift him some cool historical artifact that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg and coins seem to be the logical option here.

If it's cheap it's a fake.
>>
>>1966016
Their quality is really crappy though, so perhaps it's legit? Where can I shop for real stuff?
>>
>>1966016
I wouldn't say that. If they are cheap and not fake, it is usually because they are not in very good condition, depict a not so popular emperor, are very common, and were very low in purity, with some being made with as little as 5% precious metals.
