As for the extent as to which a layman political analyst/theorist should believe in the validity of the theory, I'd say that one should look at the chronological order y which the theory was developed.

I read before that 1776 by David Mccullough.

Both good books. After I read Rhodes' book I am going to read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Beevor is excellent, particularly if you're American. Because he's a Brit, it's nice to get a different view. He was also a student of John Keegan. His book "The Second World War" is really, really good. Covers the war in its entirety, all over the world with a lot of primary sources.
