How did American (both confederate and union) generals during the civil war fair against European generals from the greater powers? Were they on par tactically and strategically with the likes of generals from, say, France, England, Prussia and other German states, Russia, and Italy?

Lets use guys like Robert E Lee, Ulysses S Grant, William T Sherman, and Stonewall jackson for examples

Hard to calculate. A general works through a tool in the form of his troops. There's only so much you can accomplish with rabble, and rabble is what most of them had to work with through most of the Civil War, what with there not being a standing American army, and most troops being fresh conscripts or militias from dozens of different states with all the communication problems that brings.

>The Convention of Sintra was an agreement signed on August 30, 1808 during the Peninsular War. By the agreement, the defeated French were allowed to evacuate their troops from Portugal without further conflict.[1]

>The 20,900 French soldiers were evacuated from Portugal with all their equipment and 'personal property' (which was mostly looted Portuguese valuables) by the British Navy.

>They were transported to Rochefort, Junot arriving there on October 11. Avoiding all Spanish entanglements and getting free transport meant the French travelled loaded, not light like a defeated garrison marching to their own lines.

>"The Sack of Constantinople was justified by the Massacre of the Latins!"

I think the above statement is wrong. Let us review how first how so many Latins (Westerners) happened to settle in Constantinople in the first place.

Following the First Crusade, the Venetians responded to the calls for aid from the Kingdom of Jerusalem against several Muslim lords in the area (particularly Tyre). On the way to the Levant, the Venetians besieged the Byzantine port of Corfu, and proceeded to destroy Byzantine trade outposts and the merchant fleet in the Aegean, which was a serious blow to the Byzantine navy and economy. The Venetians did this in order to force the Empire to grant them concessions, which the Emperor was forced to do.

Following the granting of trading privileges and concessions to the Venetians, the Pisans and Genoese followed suit after making similar threats. So let it be known: the Latins were only on Constantinople due to their explicit war-like actions against the Empire! Having attacked and destroyed the lifeblood of the trade-oriented Empire, why should they have been tolerated to begin with? It was never possible: not the way the Latins made their way into Byzantine society.

Not to mention that the Latins of Constantinople often rioted violently, or that the Latins crushed native Byzantine merchants and trade.

Besides, if you happen to be so stupid as to ignore all of what I said, the Franks besieged and sacked Thessalonica in 1185 in direct retaliation - the second most important city of the Empire, so the two events (the Massacre of the Latins, and the Sack of Thessalonica) cancel out, making the Sack of 1204 completely unjustified.

They were more adventurous and didn't care about health and safety

Humans have always been daring and adventurous, otherwise we would never have developed and progressed

The only reason we have stifling health and safety now is because of WWII and the Cold War. WWII scared everyone with the level of death that it brought about, and people thought "never again" so they deliberately tried to stop everyone from being adventurous/impulsive and tried to wrap everybody in rules of safety

And of course the Cold War with its threat of nuclear annihilation had the same effect

In a way, the modern era is the biggest human experiment in non-violence. Never before has any animal society been able to maintain such levels of non-violence for so long. I guess it sort of works - I reckon we'll eventually have another world war (might even be in my lifetime - I'm 25), but I think a lot of today's principles of safety, precaution, all that boring shit, is probably here to stay. Why? Because we've become incredibly good and efficient at eliminating certain sorts of problems through the use of precaution and safety, that's why. Injuries, health problems, diseases, etc.

Sorry for the ramble.

I did not say reality does not exist. Neither did I say that reality exists.

I said 'things' (objects with inherent, independent, intrinsic existence that has one essence that can not be divided into smaller parts and does not depend on any previous causes or conditions or reactions for its existence) do not exist, neither do they exist.

If reality can only exist on the fact that reality does not exist. Then those 2 notions arise dependend on each other.
That is possible, but I reject that they have inherent existence or inherent non-existence.

>>2060579
If you base the existence of a taco on your observation, that means that the taco only exists dependend on your observation.
However according to your logic the taco does not have independent existence.

Furthermore the quality of "taconess" also does not exist independetly, but only exists based on your mental projection of what a 'taco' is.

Thus proving my assumption true:
1. The taco does not exist entirely by itself
2. The taco exists in your own mind
3. Your own mind does not exist entirely by itself, because it is dependend on the body
4. thus the thaco neither truely exists nor not truely exists.

When a person is born into society, they are given knowledge and history accumulated by those who preceded them. Essentially we are groomed to think and act a certain way, this is normality based on past perception as well as expectations from those around us. As we mature, we put our beliefs into a school system learning from teachers; basic authority and rules along with mathematics and language among things. Grade school is where problematic outliers within humanity such as unruly behavior or failing grades and important indicators. While it is only the beginning, your journey is first written into records for the state. (While not uncommon some will skip school and enter work such as farming in less developed areas.) What motivation is there to meet goals set by the curriculum? At this point one can expect rewards or punishment from their guardians. Materialistic awards such as toys, games, treats. Or perhaps adoration and approval from your guardian, which then translate into the pride and boost self-esteem. The punishment conversely can be physical harm, or can be disparaging remarks on your failures, utter disgust and lambasting from those you respect or follow. We are exposed to competition and introduced to what it means to win or lose. This is the origin of domestication. While it may seem like a pejorative and demeaning I truly believe "domestication" is the most descriptive expression of this process. Like breeding wild dogs, feral cats, wild pigs etc., humans are breed into domestication for society's standards. After all this simulation requires order to prosper and chaotic elements must be eliminated. Fairly standard programming in those years but once puberty occurs we come to a very primal yet absolutely core instinct of ours, which is sex. Our motivations change, now we receive chemical stimulation and pleasure simply from attraction. Sperm or egg develops which matures sexual drive

Teens are far more unpredictable, the surge of hormones creates instability and the body and mind need many years in order to adjust. The mind's potential increases while emotions fully manifest. At this stage most are in High school. While not considered technically adults, we transition into the perceived adult mentality. To quell anger and lust, embrace happiness and chastity. Humans are born with limits and these shackles slowly release to give us more potential. Promoted is obedience, regardless of entering the most difficult stage in life. The struggle with our very design, an instruction written in DNA we call instinct but we must ignore it and overcome. This is where the most errors occur in the machination. Despite this the plan is the same; finish education then attend your role in society as another gear in the system. Retirement and rest is something only earned much later in life, in order to minimize the wait for vacation of your dream and ideal reality, we pursue the best payment programs for our investment. However competition is immense, so higher education eliminates many candidates narrowing it down to the "best". The reach for zenith, we climb the pyramid for vacant but limited seats. An arduous journey with little respite and incredible sacrifice but we were developed for this moment! After all this is our purpose in society for what else to expect, nothing else was mentioned? The greatest conflict occurs here as those who climb the summit step over the fingers and faces of their competitors and those falls and failures are rarely taken gracefully. A system that demands limited winners but copious losers. This contract was signed at birth, without your consent much as life is awakened to thy self without your permission. A promised purpose for this agreement from regents at the top and security in pursue of it if you follow the rules.
>>
Choice was always an illusion because the alternative never existed. That option must be created by you because not one soul will do it for you. Domestication assumes you will accept because this simulation is apparently the most glorious option, the only option. An arrangement never questioned, and rarely observed by the individual who take part. What is the capability rate or success percentage? Those who cannot synchronize with their roles are the outliers: Losers, failures, rule breakers, the wrong, the poor, the weak, insane, and disabled.
Where do the rejected components go? It is unspoken but understood: death, prison, or decay into death. This is predestination. Our preordained fate is death. That does not conclude life has no meaning like the zero theorem suggests, because we can create our purpose thus find meaning. But we were given purpose, and opportunity to pursue that meaning when conceived? The illusion of choice served to greatly reinforce a perceived purpose, a necessary evil for the highest compatibility rate but by whom? Where did it all originate? It does not matter because those without purpose are simply a testament to Darwinian natural selection in this simulation. But the system is not fair! No living was never promised to be fair; it does not bend to our whim nor perception! We cannot opt out and unplug, the system never allowed this alternative to ensure highest accuracy in the for the organisms assimilation. When we lose our faith in the matrix, what then? This truly free being is powerless, branded an utter irrevocable lost cause with no purpose, a true pariah. The answer is simple: create your own purpose! Take your priceless faith and create! The red pill is ugly, torment, despair. Those plugged in find normalcy: domestication is complete despite this epiphany because the alternative never existed in the first place so the choice is clear, to simply live on.
>>
>>2060136
Those unplugged lose their will to live without that guidance, that absoluteness ironically.
True free will, perhaps not? The cycle of conflict never terminates as life vs death, those who die rot but also fertilize the ground providing nutrients for new life. This is eternal recurrence. The preordained fate is the powerlessness to change our reality of life and death. We are truly the same, but artificially and systematically fragmented. We ignore the collective unconscious which exchanged our thought from one another with impeccable synchronicity; this network that allowed true understanding is lost but never forgotten. Social creatures which lost the universal sense that allowed us balance, true equilibrium with others despite differences and conflict. We seek to fill that void through the network we call the internet, to find those we understand.
