Ridiculously overpriced in the U.S.
Other than that, one of the most technology- and society-furthering ideas of all time.

Meme degrees like Dance are cancer though.

one of the oldest human art forms that's continuously practiced by all cultures forever, also demands high degrees of physical fitness and training and is stacked with top tier qt's. Sounds way better than some programming bullshit that nobody cares about and is gonna be irrelevant in 3 years

Culturally speaking, was ancient Greece closer to the Near East than Europe?
45 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
They had a number of commonalities: their alphabet, the obsession with olive oil (and corresponding scorn for butter-eaters), and a sedentary lifestyle.

Greeks had nothing but scorn for the Northern barbarians, it's true--but at the same time, they were not part of the neighboring Mediterranean cultural hegemony as such. Circumcision is an example of one thing that divided them, it was everywhere in the Near East but Greeks wouldn't even let someone who was circumcised into their baths or gymnasiums.

It's also important to note that much of ancient Greece was IN what is now considered the Near East. Many prominent Greek philosophers were born in colonies in what is now Turkish clay.
>>
>>2323842
A lot of Muslim attitude towards women is really similar to the ancient Greeks, while Europe's comes from Rome and thr Germanic tribes.
>>
>>2323842
At the time, yes, because the rest of Europe were barbarians.
But Western Civilization is now descended from Greece, so we'd call it Western, now.

Found this weird Money clip today while walking out near a trail in the pacific northwest. Im wondering if anybody here know what this symbol is or if it holds any significance? it looks to me like a man in a headdress looking to the left with something coming out of his mouth. There is also, imprinted on the front what looks to be 4 crescent moons. The only marking anywhere in it is one engraved "Mexico" on the back.

Pic related is the money clip.

I've heard that at the start of World War 1 there was debate in Britain as to which side to join. Was there ever a serious chance that Britain might have joined the Central Powers over the Entente?

No and no. There was never any question of which side Britain would be on.

Are modern Poles/Lithuanians legitimate successors of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or is it another case of WE WUZing?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2323571
Yeah senpai why not.
>>
>>2323571
Poland is a prime example of russian communism ruining a beautiful and modern culture/state. Poland currently is viewed by most of the 'western' part of europa as cheap labor land with a backwards culture, and it once was perhaps the only western and modernized nation in the region.
>>
Looking at that map is a reminder that it's a complicated issue.

The thing is only Poland and Lithuania had a "proper" cultural identity and their own elites within the scope of the Commonwealth. Ukrainians and those who were to be called Belarusians were mostly just peasants, subjects so they don't really have that much of a stake in that period of history.

Thus Ukrainians consider breaking away from the Commonwealth (only to immediately be conquered by Russia...) as a fouding moment in their history central to their identity - or at least 19th century Nationalists cast the narrative in those terms.

The Belarusians are the closest to "proper" WE WUZing as they tend to recall the Commonwealth somewhat fondly and like to consider themselves in part successors of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (which irks modern Lithuanians).

With Lithuania the problem is that while they've had their own identity and elites, those elites ended up Polonised. If you look for the descendants of great Commonwealth-era Lithuanian families (e.g. the Radziwills) today you will find them in Poland and considering themselves Polish. In this way you could say the Lithuanians were robbed of that identity and the remaining modern Lithuanians are not much better off than the people in Belarus and Ukraine. This is part of the reason why the 19th century nationalist sentiment in Lithuania rejected the Commonwealth past. Modern Lithuanians look at the era as being under Polish domination so they are not prone to WE WUZING (except to pre-Union times).

Poles have had a very continuous cultural succession from the Commonwealth times (e.g. with many of the same major families remaining prominent - some still are), even though the commie era really chewed their old order up.

tl;dr: Poles are sort of legitimate, Belarusians are WE WUZing a bit, Ukrainians are WE WUZing but about something else, and Lithuanians are actively rejecting that identity.
