What's the deal with monasteries? Why did so many young men chose to devote their life to god?
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2324703
The life of a monk was a cut above what you could expect on average in the Middle Ages. Monks got plenty of food and a LOT of booze. It was also a good place to put troublesome claimants to thrones and fiefs after defeating them. Also, I'm sure the life genuinely appealed to some for its quiet and spiritual aspects. Just bear in mind that monasteries were powerful and had a lot of wealth and influence. There was very little that was unattractive about being a part of one.

I find historical eunuchs really fascinating. Why have so many societies around the world had a special social class for eunuchs (Byzantium, Persia, China, etc)? And why were they so valued within government bureaucracies?
29 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>2324686
Cuz bureaucracies tend to favor themselves and expand to quietly and slowly get more power for themselves.
Cut the possibility of inheriting bureaucratic positions, and you make bureaucracies more effective, and not nearly as bloated.

>Why have so many societies around the world had a special social class for eunuchs?
Because they can be close to the royal family but not procreate with them.
>And why were they so valued within government bureaucracies?
Well, if we're talking about China, it's because the entire basis of the government was on being a giant bureaucratic nightmare, so this one is sort of a "what comes first, the eunuch or the bureaucrat?" thing. Not sure about the others.

How were the interactions between the numerous peoples that made up the ottoman empire?
Did people mix a lot or was everyone isolated from eachother?

>>
>Did people mix a lot
According to modern population genetics, not really. Serbians remain genetically closer to Russians than they do Arabs. Egyptians are still largely the same people genetically as they were in ancient times.

Near the core of the empire. In the rims of Anatolia, Constantinople and parts of Bulgaria.

Defiantly.
Turks have mixed with Greeks and Slavs who converted to Islam.
Now due to the way nations formed these Slavs and Greeks consider themselves Turks.

There were also many Turks in Thrace, parts of Bulgaria and in Macedonia.
Also, there were many people who were Greek in Anatolia and in the areas around Constantinople.
These areas were for the most part cleansed in Balkan wars and population exchanges.
There's lots of things to visualize here, and i'm not really going to post them all.
Look up ethnic maps of the Balkans, i have half a dozen of different ones with different takes on certain things.
Also, look up population exchange between Greece and Turkey for a chart of the Greek population of Constantinople over the years.

On the periphery not a lot of (genetic) mixing happened. Places like Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, as well as Kurd and Arab areas who didn't mix with the Turks and only populations in proximity mixed.

Now in a sense south-east Serbia and some areas of Bulgaria were ambiguous and more similar to each other than either Serbia or Bulgaria proper, but in the end they chose their national identities. Serbs tried to turn them all into Serbs, Bulgarians into Bulgarians and so on. Torlak dialect (pic related).

While Turks did mix with people who lived in Anatolia who were in general Greek converts and Slavic converts that moved there.
They didn't mix with people on the periphery.

In regards to a certain meme about ius primae noctis in Serbia.
I've generally seen it used by Turks and Bosnians while fighting with Serbs over the internet. Firstly, local officials were generally local converts, but they were called Turks as a slur. Secondly, the work quoted is from a Serb in 1993, it has no historical sources and refers to folk tales, and was probably just Serbian made up propaganda to justify raping muslims in Bosnia (cuz they raped us amirite?)
>>
So basically as you came nearer to istanbul things got more multicultural.
Thanks for the answers guys.
Also people here keep saying that bosnians are muslim serbs so how true is that?

Stop believing in the fantasy that there is no God and that every person can just make up their own moral values.
>>
First convince them that the foregone conclusion of positivism is nihilism. Tell them that they now have two options:

1) Embrace the absurd, in which case their only course of action is suicide
2) Reject the absurd, in which case their only reason is to reject all other belief systems other than one that they love and bask in the glory of the lord Jesus Christ for eternity.

Wow, that projection is ugly as shit.

I've never understood the "stop hiding the REAL size of Africa" thing. It's true that most westerners don't know very much about Africa but does anybody really think that's because it's too small on our maps? Everybody's well-aware of how much history & diversity is crammed into relatively small areas around the Mediterranean, in south/southeast Asia etc, even though they're not that prominent on the map.

Nobody thinks that Siberia and Greenland are loci of civilization even though they appear huge.

Could we live in a simulation created by beings more powerful than us, yet not divine?

Long time ago I used to troll some forums on the Internet using spamming some crazy theories I read about that, yet as time passes more and more people give credence to the possibility that we live in a simulation. I read many people nowadays, even notable scientists, who state that such may indeed be the case.

What do you think about this matter? Is it really feasible that we live in a simulation?

>>
>>2324235

Why do you think I should be ignored? I am the OP.

Theists of /his/, I come to you with questions that I hope someone can answer for me. First some background. I'm from a loosely practicing southern baptist family, only my grandparents attended church regularly. What little time I spent there I didn't enjoy, it seemed only to reinforce the idea that they were only religious to avoid the consequences of not being observant. They were always too old fashioned and naive to make me want anything to do with it. My mom is not very smart and accepts anything she is told by her parents or church members, so she was never any help. By the time I got to middle school, I was a completely faithless person in denial, accepting it by high school. I wasn't even vocal about it for several more years, as it's the kind of thing that will make a lot of people around here view you with less respect, if only for a while. Conservative politics have always been closely entertwined with religion around here, which only alienates me more as a leftist. 1/5?

Fast forward a few more years and I'm a second year college student who has lost or feels like I am in the process of losing most of the things that really matter to me. I'm so depressed and anxious that I'm losing the ability to even function as a person. I haven't made it to a class yet this semester because I'm trying to work part time and I'm now suffering from horrible insomnia and only sleep around the time that I'm actually supposed to be in class. I barely even leave my bed at this point when I'm in my college town. As I type this I'm milking a minor surgery to avoid going back to my college town, which is only made harder by the fact that my ex who was practically living with me last semester and is also one of my best friends, has broken up with me and is kind of avoiding me right now. She's one of the only people I can talk to about anything because she suffers from a lot of the same problems as I do. Earlier in high school, she was a staunch agnostic and also one of my only leftist friends, so I took her seriously last summer when she wanted me to check out her church with her.
>>
It's run by the family of one of our smartest, most over achieving friends and some of our other close friends attend and supported the idea. It's non denominational, and I originally went out of curiosity and a desire to support them and show appreciation that they invited me and wanted to know my thoughts on it. I went in expecting not to hate it because I knew that if those particular friends went there, it was at the very least not as bad as some of the others I had attended. I did not expect myself to continue to go back week after week willingly, but I have, even since the beginning of the new semester. I now find my mental health in worse shape than it has ever been and I'm experiencing a lot of the problems I have always experienced with religion. I've become a person skeptical towards most things I can not actively see and touch. Every Sunday morning I wonder if I'm just becoming a more bitter and cynical person because I can't force myself to have faith in anything. If only I could experience some undoubtable proof or example of a miracle I feel like it could keep me going enough to really start to believe the things they tell me every week. I just can't FEEL anything. I want to experience these feelings and ideas that my friends are apparently having so often. I feel they are too smart and too honest to fake or exaggerate their claims and their tears that come out of their faith. The closest I feel I ever really get is thinking that a line or two of the service speaks to me and my own particular problems. 3/5?
>>
>>2324193
get on some antidepressants. Jesus Christ, if this isn't a classic case of depression I don't know what is. I'm not even going to get into the rest of this, just go see a psych. You have an illness and it needs to be treated with as much force as possible. If you feel like you should also go to church, then go. It can provide a good community to socialize and get away from isolation that is feeding your depression.

Why did Vichy French colonial forces fight against the allies?

Because they were ordered to and surprise surprise soldiers followed orders. Not the brightest bulbs in the box, shocking i know, but then again they rarely claim to be.

Because more often than not their families and friends were still in France. They feared reprisals.
That's why resistance never used their real names as the Nazis would kill or imprison their families.
This is why for example general Leclerc, used the leclerc name and not his real name : Philippe de Hauteclocque.

The Schlieffen plan is often regarded as a "bad plan", but realistically, what other option did the Germans have?
The actual border Germany shares with France was heavily fortified.

It was more hubris than anything, it relied on the french fighting like they did in the Franco-Prussian war. However, france has this weird rule since they got rid of their nobles where they throw down their rifles every other war, and the rest they become unstoppable machines of war.
>>
>>2324124
The plan would have worked just fine were it not for two major factors

1. The effectiveness of Belgian forts in slowing the German advance.

2. The lack of discipline (partially attributed to pride) in the southern sector, where German forces should have pulled back instead of attempting to advance.

With these two factors remedied, you would see a much deeper penetration in 1914; potentially to Paris which was, what, 100 kilometres away? 150?
