Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Okay OP
>>
>>55606149
If nvidia drivers are telling 3dmark not to use async why is there a jump in performance? Shouldn't it just use the original paths for dx/ogl? To say nvidia says, no don't use async, and then turns on some sort of proprietary driver implementation when async is signaled, but not used, that boosts performance seems sillly. Why not just always use that driver implementation and give dx11/ogl games a constant boost?
>>
The developer is just beating around the bush. They're using synchronous compute instead of asynchronous.

No one would throw a shit fit about this if they just named the option in the benchmark to synchronous compute instead of asynchronous.

So for my 18th birthday, my mother booked us a trip in Singapore. Although I had somewhere else in mind, I was very grateful anyway and was very excited nevertheless. Singapore, as far as I knew was also a really nice country; we'd be going to Universal Studios, traveling around the city, etc. It was all cool -- until I found out that she booked us at a hotel in the red-light district.

And when I asked her about it, apparently, she didn't know what a red-light district was, and when I explained to her what it was (slightly distressed), she fucking blew up on me?

Anyway, the point is, is it natural to feel distress after discovering that your mother unwittingly booked you @ a red-light district hotel in a foreign country or am I just being too paranoid?

Context of paranoia by the way:

The night before I found out where she got us booked, I had a dream. In my dream, there was this some sort of Hunger Games and I participated to save my s.o. who had been held captive as a prize.

Anyway, during the game, I met these professional sex workers in training and we became well-acquainted only to see them get slaughtered in front of me? The dream ends with me finding the bloody corpse of one of the sex workers in the bathroom.

(Then I wake up, do some research about the place where we're going as my mother requested me to do -- then I find out what I found out. To add insult to injury, I search for images of the place (the district) and many images of bloodied bodies/corpses appeared and a hotel room with bloodstained bedsheets.

And I just fucking broke down inside from there. And my mother blowing up on me didn't help the situation one bit. I felt so helpless, like I was going to walk straight into a trap which I knew was a trap, but everyone else didn't.

I was kinda mad at the world for a moment there.)

Anyway, just wondering if that's normal.

I'm part of the iCloud botnet. All of my pictures seamlessly upload to iCloud. iMessage makes communication on my computer amazing. Picking up a book is easy on multiple devices because of iCloud as well.

Anyway, I don't want to be a slave to it, I want the flexibility to use an Android device. Is there any workarounds to using an Android in this ecosystem?

Mostly, is there something like iMessage for android where I can send text messages from my computer easily? All the other apps I use are platform agnostic.

I already delude myself into thinking that I have control by jailbreaking my iPhone though.

I'm putting a 3-disk home server together, and I need a recommendation on drives. I currently have a 2TB WD Black, so I need two more.

Looking for 2TB 7200RPM SATA disks. Also not looking to spend a fuckton on them. Any thoughts?

>>55643645

The Deskstar NAS? Is there anything else that I won't have to wear earplugs around?

P.S. The WD Black is still in the box, so I'm not sure how loud it is. If it's nearly as loud as Hitachis, I guess I'm fucked.
>>
>>55643582

Looks like my best bet is WD Red for price or HGST 7K3000 for MBTF.

Is there any way to muffle the sound of a Deskstar? The server is going to be a media server, so it'll probably be relatively close to my TV.

I had a laptop fixed by a local computer repair store (they replaced my motherboard). A couple weeks later, my computer froze and the screen turned to a solid white screen with horizontal gray bars. I had to turn it off. A couple weeks after that my computer kept crashing after only an hour or so of use. I took it back to the repairman and he said it was my hardrive, but the screen with white bars was my video card. He already said he would fix the motherboard if it was faulty. Could the defective motherboard have messed with my hardrive? He's making pay him $79 for a new hardrive.

Pic related is my laptop

Get him to repair the screen
Buy a new hard drive for yourself if it really is kill
The white bars are not caused by the hard drive

He already downloaded windows on it. I'd have to buy windows again for $85 anyways if I bought a new hardrive, so it comes out cheaper this way.

If you could have the money and the resources to design your perfect laptop, how that laptop will be?
Mine:
>3:2 OLED or IPS at 4095x2730 15.4"
>Magnesium Alloy body
>a traditional 7-Row keyboard, but with the switches of the Lenovo Y900, spill proof of course
>A design so modular that you only need to undo six screws to get to the motherboard out of the shell, without the need to take apart the keyboard
Literally, I want a sort of Chromebook Pixel with Thinkpad fusion.
