I generally wear contacts (with some basic glasses from Coastal for backup), but with my insurance I'll be able to get basic lenses for $25 and free frames. Are any of these add-ons worth it?
Anti-Reflective Coating: $52
Basic Polycarbonate: $40
Roll & Polish: $15
UV Coating: $14
Also, just a general eye technology thread. Do you prefer contacts or glasses. Anyone done LASIK?
Anti-Reflective and Basic Polycarbonate. I only wear glasses.
I can't use AR.
It gives me eye ache and migraines. It cost me around a thousand bux to figure this out. My life is hell.
AR and Scratch resistance is a bit of a meme though. Reminder it can start flaking off after a while and hot drinks can fuck it up. (though a lot of people change their glasses constantly anyway so it's whatever for 99% of people)
Anyone else noticed a decline in the quality of basic lenses in the past 5 years or so compared to how they used to be before?
>>56399519
>>56399608
I'll probably just use the insurance towards a year supply of contacts (can get contacts or glasses but not both).
Led vs. Lcd?
>>56398169
And might i add; why?
Unless you're talking about OLED, LED is just marketing bullshit for LED-backlit LCD screens.
LED is a type of LCD. That being said, LCD displays with LED backlighting are objectively better than those without. Plasma reigns supreme though. Darker blacks, better response time, the power of the stars.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm interested in this Thinkpad. It is in mint condition, except that sticker spot visible on the photo. Can it be removed?
>>56398208
rubbing some hand sanitizer on the back for about 30 minutes, then just kinda using it for a week and the spot should be completely gone
I got my thinkpad in the mail about a week ago and opened up the bios to be greeted by a Computrace warning. Am I boned? The Thinkwiki doesn't even have a page on it.
Also, I've found an option for "Intel AT Module" but I can't find anything on the internet about it. Is it safe to just disable it?

You find a brand new laptop in a unmarked cardboard box on your doorstep and turn it on.
After it boots, you discover that it has a fresh installation of openSUSE Leap with a KDE Plasma 5 DE. Other than the repositories that come with the vanilla installation of this distro, nothing else has been installed. The desktop environment hasn't been modified.
Name the first 5 things you would do to it.
First off I wouldn't have turned it on but for the sake of exposition, I'll ignore this.
1) see if there were usernames/passwords saved in Firefox so I could find out whose laptop this is
2) look to see if there's any text files left with information
3) look at the system specs to see how nice a `top it is
4) if I found out whose it was, get in touch with them about sending it back
5) turn off the laptop and put it back in the box
>>56398052
report a lost laptop to the police
I would install windows and play some games
Why hasn't anyone made a case where the side panel is a giant radiator for water cooling?
Could make it take a 20cm fan, or 4 120mm fans? Sounds like something I'd buy anyways
Because existing designs work just fine.

it would weight 8 million tons while being able to deal with 5kw of heat, and as you would have to really try to get 1kw these days pointless
>mousepad also tilts on the lower part for left and right click
>pad there is still active and senses touching in the click area
>move the cursor to a link
>want to right click, lift finger
>place finger on right click area
>the cursor jumps 20px when touching the click area
Who the fuck thought it is a good idea to fucking integrate the buttons into the pad
>>56397946
>laptop hinges are broken
>if put the screen down, the video cable that runs up the left hinge will disconnect, requiring a disassembly to reconnect
>if the screen is too far back, the wifi antenna running up the right hinge will disconnect, requiring a disassembly to reconnect
last time I reassembled, the wifi antenna only works intermittently

Don't buy a shitty fucking laptop then. It doesn't happen at all on my XPS 13.
>>56398004
it's even funnier if you know that this thing was way over $1000 new with this standard keyboard and the proper keyboard with clitmouse for it was over $200 extra.
I'm glad I got the helix2 quite cheaply (needed a x86 pad with wacom digitizer) and the keyboard itself feels really nice but the touchpad is a fucking insult.

Yeah a 1060 or 480 would be fine in that build, should run stuff pretty nice.

Douglas Crockford's work in popularizing JSON, authoring JSLint and developing the YUI compressor as well as his book "Javascript the Good Parts" are some of the main reasons why javascript is the most commonly used programming language worldwide and why things like node.js exist.
