You can find something with 8gb RAM, an i5, and 1tb HD for $350 if you do some searching, those are the specs I'd go with.

I bought a t420 thinkpad on eBay with a 3rd gen i5, 4gb of ram and 500gb hdd for $250. Spent another 60 to put an SSD in it.

/spoiler I sold it about 2 months later but it was nice to have. Very well made
