What is the best way to make a liquor bottle drinking glass? I have an empty bottle of russian standard I would like to turn into a glass but theres a few different methods, I've heard the string fire method won't work with a thick bottle. I can't find any other proper guides just unclear comments on forums.

Just sharpen your cleaver and slice the bottle in half.
Practice a lot on beer bottles until you think you've got the method down.

would this method work?

So I've got this old sewing machine that I recently took apart and there are so many pieces to the mechanism that it got me thinking.

I want to make something out of the parts. Other than the electric motor, it's completely gears and such. So give me some ideas!

I went to install a new tail light assembly in my mom's car, but after I connected the new one I got no response from turn signal or brakes. I connected the other one that works and it was functioning properly on that side also. I am assuming that the new one is defective and am going to get it swapped out, but just wanted to make sure that I am not missing something. Do new tail light assemblies have anything that need to be done to them before being installed? Any tabs or such preventing contact? I didn't see anything, but I am not the best when it comes to these kinds of things.

Did you put light bulbs in it?
>>
In a majority of modern cars, lighting modules are 'plug-n-play' so this sounds to me like you have a faulty replacement.

My go to would be a multimeter and check there is a voltage at the terminal when the signal is on.

If it is like for like you shouldn't have any CANBUS error/lighting module check errors, although this wouldn't be expected on every car but some cars have voltage and resistance checks to ensure you're using the correct items.

Very light touch and dunk it in water all the time. It's almost impossible to not over heat the blade edge. Even if the knife isn't hot to the touch, the edge you're removing material from (and going to cut with) with be hot enough to anneal and get weak.

What is this old tool used for?

It says Bowes Seal Fast stamped on it, and there is a little wheel at the end.
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
as far as i see it i think its a glass cutter
>>
>>1056735
it's for pushing caulk into gaps between planks on the body of a boat
>>
It would have been part of a Bowes tyre repair kit.

The rough file at the bottom would be for making adhesive stick better to rubber.

The wheel is what is called a 'stitcher'. I'm not absolutely sure how you use it as I've never done it.

Hey guys, I'm looking to design a power supply that will give me a good + and - 5V output. Probably only about 1A at most would be required.

I'm thinking the easiest way to do this would be a linear supply with the appropriate voltage regulators clamped to a heat sink at the output. But, this design is rather boring and requires a large transformer.

I've never designed a switched mode power supply (like pic related) but I like the idea. They seem to be generally safer (?) due to the incorporation of an optoisolator.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any advice on what I should go with.

One more crazy idea I had is using a smaller transformer (no center tap) and then using a voltage inverter IC after the regulated +5V output to achieve the -5V line. Would that be feasible?

Just find a little transformer and split the output, pic related. A 10W transformer shouldn't be big at all. Switching power supplies are a meme.

Huh, well sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. For a practical circuit, maybe I could just slap some regulator IC's on it and call it a day lol.
>>
Look for "atx power supply breakout"

Get it and a $10 power supply and you will have a great 5V, 12V, 3.3V and -12V (which can be turned into a 24V)

I just bought a house and have no idea what I should be getting to maintain it besides a lawn mower and weed eater. I guess I would need a hedge trimmer for the shrubs around my house.

Should I spend the money on a pressure washer or just pay somebody $50 a year to do it?

The grass is pretty yellow in the front yard but lush green in the back. I have no idea. How do I fix it?

Can you paint vinyl siding or would I have to replace it with the color siding I want? It's like an off white ugly eggshell color probably because of age. I want pure white.

The drive way is pretty much just dirt from where they parked in the grass so many times. Where do I buy gravel to lay for the driveway?

Are there any could companies that make large prebuilt sheds? The metal shed kits at Lowe's and such are trailer trash tier and their prebuilt wooden sheds sitting in the parking lot are a bit small. I don't have the time to diy a project that large.

Given that you have to ask id imagine paying a handyman will work out a lot more financially viable than doing it yourself.

Buying quality tools to do a lot of jobs is costly. You have to consider how well and frequently are you going to do these jobs so the tools in effect 'pay for themselves'.
>>
>>1056701
>Pressure washer
These (especially light duty electric ones) go on sale a lot. Just wait and eventually you'll get lucky. A light duty one is almost a good thing sometimes because it's a built-in idiot limiter (you won't etch a penis into your siding accidentally).

>Grass
Is the front full-sun / south facing but the back partially shaded? Normal, calm down. It'll green up in a month or so as fall hits.

>Paint vinyl
Not a good idea.

>Gravel
Gravel guy. Has a big truck, will blast the horn if you ask nicely.

>Shed
Building a shed is a weekend job if you plan well, it's not that bad. The prebuilt ones are cheap for a reason (it's because they're cheap). Life is a series of choices.

Im building a metal shed to store some gym equipment. It's nothing large, but it will be used daily.

I'm at the final stage of planning, I have a few questions though and would appreciate any help.

1. I'm going to buy a battery powered LED Lamp to light the shed, what should I consider when buying one of these? I want to mimic natural light, I don't want anything too bright or straining to the eyes.

Should I put up a little insulation? It's a metal shed so perhaps it will get too hot in the summer?
If sol what kind of insulation? It can't be took thick as the inside is barely big enough as it is.

What else should I consider?

It won't necessarily get hot in the summer but you'll probably find it will hold a lot of moisture during winter. Personally I'd insulate the roof lining if anything but that's if I were to bother.

As for lighting, battery powered or mains? If you have mains power I'd look for warm white LED lighting strips, the self adhesive ones. They're as good as anything.

If you mean like a pre-packaged battery solution then the best will be something from a tool company but most will be bright and cool white.

Insulation is better than no insulation. Insulation foam panels is easy to put up. Finish the inside with plasterboard like any interior.

Lamp could be anything. Normal led bulbs on a usual fixture will work like any other rooms in any other houses. Just wire it to a battery. A shed is not much difference than a room in a house in terms of lighting.

First DIY project but I've run into an issue. The wood I bought (mostly 2x4) had a slight warp/twist to it. The headboard frame I've built has a slight wobble in it that I'd like to correct before continuing on.

How the fuck do you correct wood that I've already screwed together. Currently trying to weigh it down. If that doesn't work, I'll try to apply water + weight and let it dry.

>ayy lmao working with fucked up wood that needs to be corrected
