Got a bench band saw super cheap, but it didn't come with anything else. Suggestions for making a fence, besides just clamping a piece of wood, or preferably angle iron, to it?
I'll probably take a shot at a miter gauge as well. As long as it's reasonably accurate, I will be satisfied.
>>1056576
You're trying to over complicate things. If a piece of wood or angle iron works then use that.
If you make a mitre guage out of two pieces of wood fixed at right angles to each other and it works, then use than.
The type of bandsaw it is, won't be as accurate are you're hoping for anyway.
I just saw someone on youtube who made something like the op pic, with one end fixed and a toggle clamp on the other....that was pretty cool.
It will at least be better than trying to cut it by hand
I could see a miter gauge from 3 pieced of wood, a cheap school protractor, and a screw on handle of some kind working really well.
Long thin piece of wood for the slide. A piece of wood to hold the protractor and handle assembly. The last block of wood at 90 degrees standing as the pushing block, Attached to the last block. A bolt going through the guide, protractor block, and protractor. The handle screws down on the bolt clamping it all together.
I'm looking for a small desk top toy or project to build. Something like a stirling engine or one of those walking strandbeast kits. Not interested in a model airplane or anything like that. Something mechanical or with an interesting movement. Any recommendations?
>>1056572
No, no recommendation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O0DeRL7P-w
Yeah, get a Stirling engine
What sort of tools do you have etc? Anything you can actually make a Stirling engine/strandbeast?
Otherwise buying a prefabricated "kit" is not diy, it's model building
Go my ESP8266 to connect to IFTTT and send me a notification every time a pin detects a change.
Going to mount it above my front door and let me know when it is opened.
Problem is I only want it to send notifications when nobody is home (based on phone location) but incredibly IFTTT doesn't support AND/OR operations!
Could use tasker but don't want to set that up on each phone.
Any ideas how could this be a archived?
Also port you ESP8266 builds
Set up a static IP for your phone on your router then have your esp ping that every few seconds. If it can't ping you, you're not home.
This'd only work if your router is close enough to the entrance of your house to connect before you make it through the door.
Also, if that runs python, it'd be really easy to use pushbullet instead of ittt. I'm sure other languages can do pushbullet stuff too but I've only ever used python.

You can export profiles though.
I beat the shit out of it and had to replace the hd. Now my drivers will not up date e.i. network controler and it will not show a wireless adapter. I need help
Op here ive been all over the net looking for help. I can connect with an enther net cable but i want my wifi. Do yall think a wireless usb might work

Google the model number + drivers
Download your Wlan driver and install it. It should be on Asus website.

I’m into everything sustainable, so I decided that I want to make a bamboo bike. Most places on the internet instruct to connect the joints by using hemp or carbon fibre in combination with epoxy glue. However, epoxy isn’t very sustainable (big footprint), and I’d rather like to go all the way. Unless epoxy proves to be farly superior to any alternatives.
>The joints are connected by soaking the fibre in epoxy glue (gained by mixing epoxy resin with hardener) and strapping the fibre tight around the joints.
I could replace epoxy with soy glue, what are your thoughts /diy?
bumb
my thoughts are to stop being a fucking hippie retard and use some goddamned gorilla glue like a normal person
Try substituting shellac-based resin glue.
Needed ideas and tweaks for good fan ideas in tight spaces.
Ive used swveral fans in diy air filtration, diy evaporative coolers.
But now I need to know is can a stand fan survive if I hang it from the celing?
And if so about how long can it work this way?
Pic related.
>>1056206
>hang it from the celing
it will work as long as you give space for it to allow air flow
>>1056206
Do you mean hang the fan horizontal? The bearing isn't designed for that, it might or might not wear down faster.
I had a desk fan mounted to the wall above my bed...kept it clean of dust and pointed out toward the room when I wasn't sleeping. Ran constantly. Lasted just over a year. It was a Honeywell from Target. It didn't run as well mounted as it did sitting, because of the angle I suppose. There are ceiling mounted oscillating fans but they aren't cheap at all.
I have an extremely rusted WW1 trench knife of my great grandfathers and ive sanded down all of the rust but now theres a load of black stains on it and I dont know what they are. Obviously rust related stains.
The knife is still sturdy and sharp, is it possible to put a patina on it and paint over the blade with a rust eating metal paint? Will the patina be visible if I use silver paint?
thanks
1. post a pic of said knife

Mansfield toilets: why don't they have "normal" flappers?
This design just seems, well, over designed. It's not difficult to replace (I just did so this morning) but it's more complex than just swapping out a flapper.
The tldr of it is: is there some kind of an advantage to a mansfield toilet that I just haven't figured out, or is it just weird design?
>>1056110
If you don't know, this is a normal, flapper style toilet. But you probably knew that.
Lets more water out at the first opening, full 360, rather than with a regular flapper where it's peeled up slowly, starting with a trickle increasing until fully open.
Think of it as an early version of low flush toilets, by combining the low material contact, wear, and replacement with the original power of a flush ball or disk.
compare it to the newer lower flush kohlers with a bucket similar to that, but with more buoyancy to raise quicker, or the toto or american standard version with a ring around a plastic flapper that moves straight up on a guide like the wire and ball flush balls.
I think Mansfield style designs are the norm in Norway, and unless there's something wrong with the float assembly or clogs in the exhaust line somwhere, they never struggle to dismiss even the largest of dumps.
Apparently, this is a problem in amerilardistan, whereas I've never really encountered "clogged toilets" here unless obviously trying to use a whole rolls worth of paper. Even for the hugest most solid of shits.
Hi /diy/
I saw these nice Boots (pic related) but I wantend them to be in a brown finish. Im a poorfag and can't afford the brown Version (about 150€, wheras these Boots are only about 50 €) How to dye? What Kind of colors/colorremover/whatever should i use? What Tools do i may need? This is my first time dyeing leather. Helpful sources and Tutorial are appreciated.
>>1056075
you're not going to be able to make black boots brown
>>1056075
They are dyed black forever. There is nothing you can do to make them brown. They are not nice boots. Save your money and buy a good pair of boots that will last.
Spray paint.
Has anyone tried to make a bismuth monocrystal ?
I'd like to make one during next holidays, but there is no website referencing how to get a single crystal.
What I did learn however was :
- Molten bismuth oxidizes quickly, so you have to keep a surface in contact with the air as small as possible
- You get a ~70% yield in crystal(s) because you have to pour the molten metal when the crystals have formed at the bottom.
>>1056032
Cool it as slowly as possible.
Use larger volume for bigger crystals (obvious)
Dont disturb it while it cools, vibrations cause small crystals to form.
Cover the crystals from oxygen when you pour the liquid off.
Use high purity bismuth, otherwise the crystals wont be colorful.
>>1056048
Why would I cover the crystals while pouring the molten metal off ? Wouldn't it cause the crystals to not become colorful ? Otherwise it would look like any other metal
>>1056032
Did this in highschool.
>melt elemental bismuth
>allow to cool down to 585f
>insulate container
>hang seed crystal of bismuth just below surface
>gradually lower as temperature draps or you see crystal formation protruding
>when temperature reads 581-2 hover a chunk of dry ice over the container and allow it to sublimate to fill the pocket with co2 gas.
>remove crystal
>keep it suspended in the co2 gas
>Wait for it to come to room temperature
The co2 will insulate against oxidation but will do so in a gradient so you get various levels of oxidation and sheen
The color of the crystal is directly related to the oxidation layers thickness and is a result of light waves interfering with itself just like titanium and niobium
I've got a bunch of men's clothing items I want to alter for myself to wear; primarily dress shirts, but also some sweaters and a few pants.
Is there any sort of of way I can standardize this process and make it easier on myself?
I really only want to slim the sleeves and take in the waist to create more of an hourglass shape instead of a box, but measuring marking and pinning every garment seems so difficult when im taking them all in for the same person
Pic mainly unrelated
>>1056023
Create a standard pattern for yourself. Or do one piece properly and measure the resulting dimensions. Then transfer it to the others.
>>1056568
Okay that makes sense
How would I do that exactly?
I've been out of practice with pattern drafting for quite a few years; I'm more than a bit rusty
Is it wrong that after years of 4chan I don't assume this is a girl. I immediately jumped to the conclusion of this being a trap or some sissy mental disorder.

I have an old snapper mower similar to pic related that finally died. The motor and the blade are pretty much the only things that work. However, I got a push mower that works perfect but has no gas tank.
Is there a way to Frankenstein these into a working mower?
>>1055957
ok so.. engine and blade work, but it died... uhm what exactly died on it that cant be easily fixed with a repair or replacement part. the engine is the heart of the mower, usualyl whe na mower dies its because the engine is blown beyond repair...
be more specific tell us whats wrong with it, what actually DIED?
>>1055957
never seen a mower design like that where it's essentially connected front and back through that tube
theres very little that isn't fixable on a riding mower, unless you totally stripped gears or something
>>1056258
Gas tank leaks, fuel line broke, fuel filter broke, carburetor is done for, starter doesn't work, the shifter is falling off.
