Hello. First time posting on DIY, saw this at my parents place just now and it kinda gave me some feels. Is it reverseable och can I slow the prosses down some how? Pls b gentle

1. dissolve citric acid in warm water, then pour over it
2. scrub with magic eraser and some water
3. repeat until clear
to prevent this, drop some citric acid over it regularly like once a week or once a month
>>1052162
Thanks pal I appreciate that. You have a nice day.
>>1052171
no problem, remember to let the citric acid sit on it for a bit, maybe a few hours before pouring again
a more hardcore method is citric acid in boiling water, turn on hot water and run it into the drain to heat it up first (to reduce thermal shock), then citric acid in boiling water pour onto it, slowly
Hi Guys,
i was on a festival and after the houseowner told you to take everything you want, i decided to take every piece of wood and build this boat. the sails are fully functional and 20 people can dance to progressive music on it. What do you think
Looks like a fun place for kids to play pirate, and to have a few drinks with friends.
I suspect, however, from the look of the railing in your pic, that, either the building codes in your area are quite lax, or unenforced, or that you did not build to them.
I don't know how seaworthy this would be, as you don't show the hull, but even as a play structure where it sits, I would recommend getting a copy of local building codes, and having a look at safety and durability issues.
What function do the sails have, other than edutainment value? Do you plan on floating it?
Its on private property and the parties and stuff are private so i guess the building codes dont matter that much. Its build on stones so the structure is not falling apart after one year.
Sadly its not gonna be floating, its just a better garden house :). Everything is screwed together with m12 Stuff and i build it together with someone who is doing festival stages so i guess its pretty safe. The sails are for decoration and for beamer projection space, it worked great at night.
I found these boards at home and I want to do something useful with them. I was thinking about doing paintings or maybe printing a photo on them or something. Left one is conglomerate, the rest are okumen wood.
Kinda newfag at all this crafting shit. Any ideas?
Also sorry for bad english.
>>1052119
Looks like nice wood. Make a box or something, I dunno. Painting on it would be a waste and not look good anyway. Painting is for canvases.
>>1052137
>nice wood
Its just cedar plywood. Those offcuts he has there probably cost $4 at most.
>>1052157
>>1052137
OP here. Yes, actually is pretty cheap wood.
My idea was to do something similar to the board in the photo. Sinmilar technique, I mean

Is it possible to make a hand-cranked motor out of a sewing machine? I bought an old sewing machine at the thrift store to take apart and it's got plenty of gears and bits and such and a nice electric motor.
I want to attach a power outlet to it, the kind you see on the wall, so I could use it for different stuff. Not like a TV or anything big because I'm not a retard. Would this be feasible?
>>1052057
Does the electric motor have permanent magnets in it? Some motors use electromagnets to generate the magnetic field which means you can't use them as generators since you've got the Catch-22 of needing power to generate power.
Even if it's a permanent magnet motor you'd need precise speed control to generate the 120v 60Hz most appliances need. Something simple like a lightbulb or heating element will handle whatever random RPM you can produce, but not a laptop charger or monitor.
>>1052069
How can I tell which is which? Electromagnets would be just a coil of wire around a piece of metal, right?
>>1052077
basically, yeah
Anybody ever build a houseboat? Or just live in one?
I'm pretty confident I could build one off of catamaran pontoons or something, but I'm curious what kind of maintenance these things need, and hidden costs (ie, insurance). Especially in a part of the world where the rivers can freeze!
>>1052017
Are you going to build a boat house for your house boat?
>>1052017
>I'm curious what kind of maintenance these things need
Check your local building codes where ever you plan to do this.I used to live on a TVA controlled lake around the Tricities area. They didn't regulate houseboats untill the 60's-70's and the whole lake turned out to be really trashy and shit looking. These days they heavily regulate every boathouse, dock, boat, and everything else on the lake. They also stopped giving out permits for houseboats decades ago, so even a 30 year old, moldy, rotten out piece of floating piece of shit houseboat is worth several thousand bucks, just because it's a grandfathered-in houseboat, and you can rebuild/replace the whole thing, a few parts at a time untill it's totally new.
Just buy 5000 55 gallon drums and stick them under a shipping container filled with imitation crab meat.
Would a steel tape measure increase a handheld radio's reception?
That's pretty much it. I want to do pic related for camping/hiking reasons, but can't seem to find whether it's just something that looks cool, or actually increases a radio's incoming reception. On my Baofeng UV-5R, want to be able to hear some radio stations and pick up weather statements when I'm out and about. Don't know much about radios, other than I reduced the power and narrowbanded my Baofeng to keep it legal.
>>1051989
I would doubt it, but who am I to say? The only true way to know is if you try it yourself.
Are we talking receiving only or are you also transmitting? If the antenna is not the correct length and width you'll burn out the finals in your radio quickly. Tell me the frequencies you'll be using and I can tell you the length you'll need.
>>1051997
I'm only looking to receive, though I'd like to be able to transmit if I need to. I'm using: 162.400 for weather, 151.820/151.880 as alternates in case I'm with a friend.
To clarify: the tape measure would not replace anything on the radio. You would take the tape measure, and "seal" it to the antenna with a heat shrink sleeve. The tape measure basically sits right next to the antenna, there will be no power going to it whatsoever.
After reading/translating a bit, some people are saying the steel tape inhibits the antenna, and makes signal worse rather than better.
How do I make a proper firepit in my backyard? Going to heat up a big caldron the old-fashion way.
>>1051958
clear out some grass or find a spot open and away from trees
rock circle to hold ashes, dig around 1/2 foot down and form a /\ with wood
make two forks like Y---Y then bridge them with metal and hang the pot.
make a fire underneath
dig a pit, make a fire in it
Gabion walls. (Wire fence filled with rocks.)
Anyone have experience with these?
I work at a rock quarry and can get rock at 60% of normal price with free delevery.
Where i live is rocky as fuck. Im talking 2 weeks with a rock bar to put in 10 4x4 posts for a privacy fence. I dont have much frouble digging about 2 feet down though.
My thinking is dig a trench and tamp screenings into it, then instal one of these gabion walls.
Having trouble finding a price or wtf else i need to do this myself.
Any advice or guides?
Need an 8 or 10 foot fence.
>>1051889
They sell glass rock i can us to decorate. If finances allow ive considered a small layer around the top with white led backlighting.
>>1051890
Mostly just looking for an affordable setup with minimal work.
Hi /diy/. Has anyone worked with acoustic speakers? I have a pair of old Marantz (pic related) and I would like to repair them (starting with the woofer's suspensions) but being new to diy I don't know if it's worth the time and the costs. Any advice?
>>1051668

do you even google?
>>1051716
I know it's possible to change them smartass, I'm asking if it's worth the time and money because the speakers are roughly 30 years old and I am inexperienced
>>1051750
Are you capable of deciding for yourself?
Are stairs easy to do? I have to rebuild this staircase and add a 90 degree landing to the base so I can make the steps longer so the wiener dogs can make the hops without hurting themselves.
I have been watching a lot of videos and it doesn't seem that difficult. Just a bitch because I dont own a truck and have to rent one for the materials ect.
>>1051639
the real question is why you would want to own dachshunds
>>1051641
They are step children. I had a cat once, and never wanted to be hurt again.
I would just leave the fucking stairs but the SO insists I fucking rip them out and build new ones.
She has made this remodel a fucking nightmare but learning experience I guess
>I can put a washer and dryer hookup under the floating kitchen counter since theres no space anywhere else
>NO I DONT WANT THEM THERE 100% NEVER HAPPENING DONT EVEN TLAK TO ME ABOUT IT KEKEKEKE
>Finish kitchen 100%
>WOW WHY DONT WE HAVE A WASHER AND DRYER JEEZE WHY DIDNT YOU JUST PUT THEM HERE?1?!
a lot of rage here in this remodel, and I am hoping I can do the stairs. Its just kind of spooky because 100% perfect cuts and first time doing it
>>1051791
>but the SO insists
say no more senpai. i understand and live by the 'happy wife happy life' mantra. go do whatever you gotta do to make your life easier, even if it involves re-doing fucking stairs for no reason, just keep in mind that making them deeper is gonig to kinda be weird when you consider that the door is right there....idk though
I fucked up, i just shot a hole in my carpet with a .45 is there any cheap way to fix the carpet and padding without tearing anything up majorly?
>>1051569
I'm going to need you to post picture and definitely describe how it happened in maximum detail.
I live in a sketchy place and was drunk and very paranoid, so i cocked back my pistol and accidentally pressed the trigger. Foundation is fine but padding and carpet is fucked. Pls help
>>1051569
Tear a patch of carpet off of somewhere unnoticeable and stable it down to cover the hole.
WHERE i can get this pneumatics for this aplication. In my country this kind of furniture is over 1k US I want to make my own !
car scrapyard (rear hatch door on estates best for a pair) maybe an idea. Be very careful if you have to remove these yourself tho ;)
>>1051353
Why not just build it with drawers...
That thing looks like a deathtrap. And how are you going to build strength into that flat piece?
I have a freezer, it stopped cooling. However the compressor is hot and is running constantly. After disconnecting the thermostat the compressor shut off (as expected). How to debug this freezer?
The condenser is room temperature (so not hot)
>>1051323
sounds like it is leaked all of its gas away
>>1051323
Sounds like a new fridge.
Calling someone out is going to be around the ballpark of 200-400 dollars to fix it. A new fridge (as long as your smart and just buy the bare basic it is just a box to hold your food, not an art piece. ) is around 600 dollars. I recommend GE for fridges. For dishwashers, Samsung or maytag, and for stoves GE or maytag.
So I thought it'd be cool to try and create my own furnace to melt some soda cans and make them into little ingots. Problem is, I dont know anything about working with molten metal or anything else for that matter, at those temperatures.
So, I was wondering if anyone, who has some experience on this subject, could explain the basic safety measures when working with something this hot; for instance, what type of gloves am I looking for to avoid burning my hands off, any specific material I want my shoes and pants to be made of to minimize the chances of me getting too severely burnt, in the event that I drop some of the metal on myself, that kind of stuff.
Any other advice regarding the operation of a homemade furnace etc. is also very welcome.
its not usually an issue but
leather gloves and boots so any molten shit runs off, pants no shorts/etc.
If you use plastics they will melt and the plastic and metal will hurt you. So cotton/canvas and leather are your friends. tennis shoes have vents and shit that it could run down, plus are made of plastics
have a bucket of water nearby for any burns, the quikcer you cool off the better.
Learned most of that from plumbing/soldering before. When I was younger I soldered in running shoes and if it wasnt such a small amount could of been bad
>>1051288
Sure thing pal
>long sleeves, pants from leather or cotton or a specifically designed high temp workshirt
>tuck boots and shoes under pant legs, molten metal can fall down your pant leg, you want it to go onto the ground not to fill up your boots
>specialty high temp gloves or thick leather. gloves dont protect, they just buy you time
>eye protection is a must, preferably full face mask. Seen drops of aluminum go into people's faces, that shit is permanent and will fuck you up before you can get it off
>CLEAN. MOLDS. the last thing you want is to pour 3 cups of steel into a nice mold only to have it blow up in your face because there were a few little drops of water at the bottom that immediately turn into superheated steam and spray metal all over. Keep em in a hot oven until pouring time.
>some metal fumes from galvanized stuff is really harmful, i always recommend doing this knd of shit in a well ventilated spot
>if your keys fall in they're already gone, dont try to fish them out Dale you fucking idiot
>radiant heat is really harsh, get shaded mask
>fire extinguisher type B C and a bucket of lime for metal fires
>>1051301
Oh, also quenching should be done with a high volume, low surface area container. I use a big metal garbage can.
