So today I mounted a TV in my bedroom with a small swivel mount that was rated for 12-32 inch TVs and under 25 pounds. The TV is 32 inches and with an unknown weight and I decided to mount it anyways. The entire night I started having panic attacks and staring at the TV because I don't want it to fall. Is there anything I could do to reinforce or make it stronger? If it was going to fall would a 24 hour test be good enough to relax about it?

>>1053412
whats the model of the TV?

have you tried google TV name and then weight?
>>
>>1053424
Yea I finally found the model weight and it seems like it's in the upper range of 20+ lbs. I'm still skeptical about it and would like to put some type of safety. Would 24 hours be enough to test if this thing is every going to fall and kill me? Lol
>>
>>1053430
So it is outside specification, it could fall, I would get a bigger mount and stop thinking about it

No, it might fall off next week because your mount or the screws need time to work themselves out.

Lesson of the story is do your research before buying stuff.

i can't find anything about the following on the internet. Evaporation takes heat out of an object, so warm air, inside a metal tube with wet cloth on the outside could cool the air inside.
I can't find anyone who has tried it, like in the setup for heating air. (see picture).
Any ideas if it could work?
I lack the equipment to try it, like lots of cans and a thermometer to measure it, but will save up on cans so i can make a larger setup to try it.

What's the application? Just read up on basic refrigeration cycle, compressor vs adsorption cooling, ground geothermal cooling systems if you just want to learn theory, those subjects should get you started.

I want to build two desks for me and my brother.
I found a very nice solid pinewood board (18 mm thick) for a decent price, so the countertop part is covered, at least in theory, in both desks.
Now, I was thinking on make the legs on iron pipe, like pic related, but I'm cheap, and also I believe (but not 100% sure, I will ask to their customer support in a few hours, because is too early here) that my nearest hardware store doesn't offer threading and sizing the pipes.
In case of that, I'm looking for some other stores specialized in pipes for that service, but I'm pretty sure that they will me charge a lot for that, because they're small business in a third world hole and shit.
So, I tought: Can I make the iron legs from PVC pipes? Could they resist the almost 10.5 kg of countertop in both desks? Could they resist at least other 20 kg in varied crap, like, for put an example, a PowerMac aluminum case? (that shit weights a lot)
Thanks in advance, /diy/

no, pvc is bendy, i wouldnt put anything expensive on it

unless you get some large diameter pipes
>>
>>1053399
You'll probably have to over design the supports to use PVC piping.

Why can't you cut and thread your own iron pipes?
>>
>>1053405
I was thinking on that, that PVC is too bendy for furniture related crap.
What about build two cabinets of 18mm MDF and put them like pillars?
>>1053408
For the same reason stated in my first post: Too expensive. A thread cutter here is too darn costly to justify it. I have a plumber friend, but that guy doesn't work with iron pipes, he only does copper related shit.

I'm new to electroplating, is it possible to plate a metal over another one? I got this cadmium plated steel lines, is it possible to get them brass plated or I'll need to remove the cadmium plating?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Cadmium reacts before brass. You'll have a galvanic cell if you put them both in an electrolytic solution. I don't believe you can plate brass onto cadmium. See this table for the galvanic series of metals - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_series
>>

Also, see this table of standard electrode potentials. It's been a while since I've done much electrochemistry, but this should be useful.

Well you could start doing minor repairs yourself. A lot of things are far less hassle to just do yourself rather than call the landlord, have someone come over to the place and get near all your precious stuff, etc.

Of course just keep in mind you're responsible for anything you attempt to do and screw up.
>>
If dad bought you tools I would assume he knows how to use them. Take new tools to dad's house and help him with his projects. Learn how to use them. You won't live in an apartment forever.

Bonus....father / son time that is priceless.

To their credit, they found them after about 10 minutes. They had some shit tier Huskey's that I picked up, since my needs are pretty minimal for the time being. I swear though, I felt like I was asking for something pretty standard, like nails or screws, and they were reacting like it was some kind of gold-plated specialty item that only Woodcraft or similar would carry.

I've run into one or two employees that seem to be semi-knowledgeable about their sections, lumber, mainly, but anyone who looked under 50 or anything other than white (not trying to be edgy, just had terrible luck with other groups) could barely ID a mop properly.

My calculator's screen suddenly started looking like this, I didn't drop it or anything, it is stored in a cabinet and only I use it. This coincided with me buying and using a linear power supply and an oscilloscope (Rigol DP831 and DS1054Z)

Now, I don't give a fuck about the calculator, but I'm worried about my computer monitor, which is also near the cabinet and both instruments - I'm wondering if they might have anything to do with the calc failing

Is that even possible? Can I measure it somehow? Or was it just a terrible coincidence?

Hello /diy/.

I have an extremely bad "humidity" problem in my basement.

As in, one of the walls is WET all the time from water leaking in from the backyard.

Now, a bit of background:

>My basement is a 5x1.5m room. Three of the walls are interior walls, and one of the small sides is an outside wall.
>The outside wall is built like shit. Like all the other walls in the basements really. This is a very common problem in pre-1970s buildings here in Turin, Italy.
>This is a 5 story building, so I cant jus't tear a hole in the backyard and tar the wall from the outside.
>The side joints between bricks mostly have no mortar in them, there's literal holes in the wall where water was seeping through. The bricks themselves were completely wet to the touch though, so I doubt mortar would have made a difference.
>The basement did not even have a floor; it was bare earth. This is also common in pre-1970s buildings here.

So, the first thing I did was rebuild the missing wall obviously.
Then I laid a 5cm concrete floor on top of the bare earth.
I didn't mind the loss in height since the basement is unusually high, and those 5cm will help prevent flooding if a pipe bursts in the rest of the basement.

Next, I plastered all the walls since they looked like shit, and I hoped this to help with the water leakage issue as well.

It didn't.

If you run your hand across the wall, it gets wet.

How the fuck do I fix this?
The only solution I can think of is to build a fire against that wall to dry it out, and then leave a small fan running 24/7 to bring in fresh air from the outside.Luckily, there is a window.

I also thought about using one of those polymer-based paints on it but I'm worried that water will still seep through the wall, get trapped behind the paint, and make a mess of everything.

At least like this it's spread out and it has a chance to evaporate.

I just now realized I didn't tell you why first thing I needed to "rebuild the wall", and which wall I was referring to.

One of the interior walls was collapsed when I bought the house.
This is presumably because of the extremely humid environment; the mortar was so crumbly it could be broken off the bricks by hand.

Here's shot where you can see the wall being built.

You also get a lovely view of the sewage pipe in the unit next door.
>>
>>1053096
Man, and here those Europeans would have you believe that their brick homes were indestructible. Brought low by shitty building standards.

There is a known good solution but you are not going to like it. You have to rebuild the wall and seal it from the outside. That means you have to dig the dirt away from that wall and put a heavy duty water sealant on the brick after you rebuild it. I'm not talking something you buy in a paint can and put on with a brush. I'm talking the real deal. You have to rest a sprayer and it goes on like a coating of asphalt. The fact that the building is 5 stories has nothing to do with the solution. You can't fix the problem you have with half measures.

I'm looking at buying a used popup camper made by Four Wheel Campers. These things are usually quite expensive and sought after, and since this one is pretty cheap and has been sitting for a while I'm suspicious it might be in terrible condition. I'll preface all this with saying I am not handy at all and probably asking some stupid questions. The fact that no one else has bought it and my lack of knowledge makes me think I shouldn't buy it.

The seller says it has two issues - rust on the outside latches and it needs a new headliner. If this is as simple as buying some RV ceiling fabric and attaching it on then that's fine, but if the insulation and ceiling are severely damaged then that's another thing.

Also is the rust on the latches probably not the only place that would be rusted? Right now I'm relying on the seller being honest and not wasting my time since I've told him I'm several hundred miles away.

I've been reading up on used campers (and this specific manufacturer) on other forums, but any input here would be appreciated.

OP, I would be very very cautious with buying an RV in that condition. This is coming from someone that has lived in a 30ft 5th wheel for the last 3 years. The first thing that comes to mind is mildew and mold concerns with the ceiling and insulation, or even possible rot. I've never dealt with pop up RVs. But if the ceiling liner is anything like mine, and every other Rv I've been in, the liner is more like a very thin cardboardy particle board. My guess is that there was water damage and he took off the ceiling and put new insulation in. The problem with RVs is that they are very expensive to fix and restore, and no matter how much you put into it, you'll never see that money again when selling it. They're literally money pits, and possibly bigger money pits than boats. They depreciate in value faster than any other "toy" and it's almost ALWAYS not worth it to restore one. That being said, if you're set on buying this, check the plumbing. It looks like it was kept outdoors and possibly not winterized. If it wasn't winterized then it's most likely got leaking and cracked plumbing. Make sure the black tank is not leaking they're a PIA to replace and pricey. Make sure the electrical is good. Inspect the axles, suspension, and tires. But honestly I'd look elsewhere, unless you really really want this and are not afraid to throw 4-5k into fixing it. My best advice is to keep looking and find something in better condition.
>>
>>1053041
5th wheel guy again. Offer him 1k. A 15 year old pop-up camper that sits in the back of the truck, with needed repairs is not worth 2k.

What is the thermostat controlled by? A bulb? Is the bulb clear of debris, and functioning properly? If it is only sensing 200 at 300 degrees, it will be too hot. What I'm getting at is replace the thermostat with a universal adjustable one.
>>
Run it with the back off so you can see the state of the element. If it never turns off then some thermostat isn't tripping.

Looking to build a freestanding woodie to practice climbing on, but my I had one question. I'm building this contraption in my garage and was wondering if anyone had any experience with suspending a rock climbing wall with rope? My thought was secure the bouldering wall to the rafters and the angle on incline can be adjusted. Take in the slack and you have a 90 degree surface to scale. Let out the slack and the surface becomes more inclined. Any thoughts?
