Looking to buy myself a Goliath bird eater, had a chile rose when i was younger. Can anyone advise me on how these are temperement wise, how hard are they to keep/handle etc

Pic related.

they're expensive, hard to find, and if you find them they're mostly wildcaught.

and wildcaught swamp spiders are the hardest to keep in the hobby and you'll end up killing them.

so stick to Grammostolas buddy.
>>
>>2024942

i know what you mean about hard to find, in the UK the only place i can get them says every 6 months they get one or two in if they're lucky.
>>
>>2024944
yeah, those are all wildcaught, probably already dying when they arrive in the store due to internal parasites and the majority of wildcaughts are adult males that don't have much time left anyway.

you'll end up with a dead spider.

even if you get captive bred Theraphosa species they're still tricky to keep.

you can order them online on bugzuk, I've used that site before, they have a pretty neat collection and the prices are good.

I think these are coming out of one my house plants. I have one currently with me and I don't know what to do with him. I usually only see them during the summer months. Will he die if I try to put him outside? It's really cold.

Maybe, but they don't live very long anyway. Just leave it near leaf litter so it can bury down and stay warm.

I've been trying to catch this little dude for the past three days. He's been hopping around my yard near the bird feeder when the other sparrows fly in and finally managed to grab him to check him out. I thought he may have a broken wing at first because he never used them but I gave him a look over and it appears he's just missing his tail feathers. One wing still might have a problem since he still should be able to fly without them(if not just poorly) but from by just looking at it, both wings seemed ok. He appears to have his tail vertebrae intact still(i checked because i've found complete tails of birds once with some bone attached).

What are the odds for this little guy? I already let him go and I piled more wood near the fence, bird feeder and fire pit where he hangs around so he has more cover to duck into. I figured there's really nothing I could do for him by keeping him, and all it'd do is stress him. Even if he can't fly, he can at least still hang out with his bird friends when they stop in. Besides the typical bird seed I leave out, is there anything extra that might help like mealworms or something?

His name is Jeremy. I'm rooting for the little guy, if not for the fact I'm surprised he's survived this long with all the outdoor cats around.

If it's winter and cold where you live it might be a good idea to put some fat balls there as well. Especially if he's injured it might help him overcome the winter.

I have those in block form. There is snow on the ground here so it's pretty cold. Should I put them at the bottom of the bird feeder so he could reach or toss some bits in the woodpiles? I'm worried if I put any food in his woodpiles it'll attract other animals to him but I do want to make sure he's getting something.

So a couple of days ago i found some unwanted pets. Currently have 5 of them in a container (used to be 8 but 3 died; 2 didn't tolerate the radiator heat and the other drowned in lemon juice). Anyway, how do i stop them from spreading to other rooms? Im thinking of putting sticky traps around the entire door but i was wondering if there was an easier way. Perhaps something that would deter them from approaching the other rooms to begin with.

As much as I hate the "KILL LE BUGS WITH LE FIRE XDD" meme, I have to second this.
Bedbugs are a complete fucking nightmare, and the only really good option is heat treatment.

There isn't anything worse that could be infesting your house.

Steam clean EVERYTHING, temperatures above 140F/60C kills all stages make sure to move quick and do all nooks and crannies. And they still might come back.

I own a Pomeranian similar to pic related. We live in an apartment. Ever since he reached puberty, he likes to bark whenever he hears people passing by in the corridors outside of our flat. How do I get him to stop barking or should I tolerate it?

Evening, all.

I just wanted a second opinion from fellow rat keepers. Pic attached is Hanako, who looks rather nibbled around the face. About six weeks ago, I was given a seven month doe because she kept beating up the rittens that her former owner tried to put her in with. The way the owner described it, it sounded like normal dominance behaviour, but the owner hadn't been keeping rats for very long and didn't really know how to do introductions. I took the doe, named creatively 'Rattie', and over the course of a week introduced her to my two adult girls, Hanako and her sister Sawako. Hanako and Sawako are big girls who'd never been apart, so I figured they'd together be able to take on Rattie. Rattie, rechristened Toshiko, is smallish and incredibly sweet, very intelligent, an excellent climber, an INSANE Rat Olympics caliber jumper, and, as it turns out, indeed something of a bitch to other rats. She immediately started pushing around Sawako and Hanako, who weren't quite sure what to do despite the fact that Toshiko is two thirds the size of either of them.

Yesterday I noticed these marks on Hanako's face. Sorry for only the one picture, but I've no one to help pin her down for me. There's more on her muzzle and some just past her eye. I was a bit alarmed so I checked her and the other two for mites, no problems. I watched them carefully today, and there's been a new development in the pecking order: if Toshiko gets too uppity, Sawako and Hanako will join forces and pin her down together. The look on Toshiko's face when they do that is something priceless. As a result, I'm 98% certain that the marks on Hanako's face are from her pining Toshiko. However, as for the other 2%, would you fellow rat keepers mind giving me your opinion? Many thanks.

General rule of the thumb is 'no blood, no foul' but the marks on her face obviously were bleeding at some point. With fighting rats, you either separate them or spritz them with water to break them up so they go back to their usual business. If it's extreme aggression with blood and gashes, then you have to consider removing the aggressor entirely.

It could just be hormones. They can get pretty uppity when they're in heat, vice versa with out-of-heat does bothering does in heat.
I never had problems with females unless they were kept in a group of 2-4. When I took in a litter and combined the females with my 4 other unrelated females, they barely even squabbled. Also the names of your rats are stupid.
>>
Your rat names are cringey af. Weeb names are worse than the Harry Potter ones.
>>
>>2033172
>>2033174

Yeah, the names are kind of dumb, aren't they? I named one of my first girls after a DS9 character and I just sort of ended up with a theme. I used to have a friend who named all of hers after cheese; "Tyrolean" sound pretty cool when it's read out loud for the best in show. It's actually a reeking, mold encrusted cheese from Austria.

> It could just be hormones. They can get pretty uppity when they're in heat, vice versa with out-of-heat does bothering does in heat.

There is that. I don't keep bucks and I only desex if a new kitten is especially stroppy. Toshiko is definitely over sexed and does harass the other two. Hanako I can very rarely even tell if she is in heat, so when Toshiko tries to mount her, she's just confused and pissed off. Sawako's a middle to strong heat, but often she'll push off Toshiko even then. It's pretty weird though, the way their heats are so out of sync. This is the first time I've ever had girls who don't form the four carriage lesbian hump train whenever I have friends over.

Hey /an/
I'm going to the shelter tomorrow and I might end up bring home a cat if we find one the family agrees on.

Two questions I can't find answers too.

Is there a way to influence a kittens personality as it gets older? My fiance really wants a cuddly cat since his cat was put down a few months ago. Our current cat loves being around people but hates being held. He loved being held as a kitten but became more and more distant as he grew up (which was the opposite of the cat that was put down, who was a feral kitten who grew into a cat that always needed to be on your lap)

And is there a way to prevent a cat from becoming overly vocal? The cats I grew up with never made a sound except when they were hungry. Our current cat meows nonstop all day and night. I'd rather the new cat not fall into that habit.

Why not get an adult cat? Kittens are cute but a pain in the ass, and you won't know what its personality will be like when it grows up. Generally just try to pick the most out going, friendly kitten, and play and socialize with it as much as possible if you want it to be friendly and comfortable around people. Like with your current cat though, there's no way to tell how it ill grow up to be. Kittens are a gamble like human children, sometimes even with the best parenting they grow up to be dicks. Best to check out grown cats that are allready fully mentally developed, so you know reasonably well what you're getting. Tell staff what it is you're looking for in a pet and they'll do your best to match you with an animal that best fits what you're looking for.
>>
>>2031846
You can't be sure with a kitten, not for (some people say) up to 2 years, although in my experience just one year has been enough.

Spend time with the adult cats instead. You'll have a much better idea of their temperament, and you can easily ask the people at the shelter about how vocal they are.

And I will say, cuddly cats just tend to be noisier in my opinion. My buddy has to nap with me all the time, he loves lap time and cuddling when I just wake up in the morning, but he's one whiny mother fucker. I love this little asshole to pieces, but he definitely has a lot to say.

Thanks guys.
Just got back from the shelter. There weren't very many cats there, surprisingly. There was one cat we liked but it can't be housed with other cats so we didn't get it.

I suppose we'll go back next week and see if any new cats are up for adoption.

You want a bowl with plenty of room to grow and hot chlorinated water. Probably around a 2:1 ratio of water to "dino eggs". Short lived, enjoy it while it's warm.
