I'm going on uni exchange next year in the first semester (northern hemisphere so Aug-Dec-ish) I'll be 21/22. I'm from Australia and mostly considering Europe. Where would be the most fun?

As a person who has only vacationed in Europe I'd personally say Czech Republic. It's a good mix of the comforts of western Europe while maintaining the lower prices of Eastern Europe.

What are you studying?
What are your priorities/preferences when it comes to language/architecture/history/food culture/party culture/prices

If I had to make a general recommendation I'd say the Netherlands. Lots of small super nice university cities, good mix of quality/cheap when it comes to food and partying, they speak English, nice architecture and history, etc.

I want to go somewhere for a month, but I'm worried I'll get so lonely. How do you prevent loneliness while travelling?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Try not to have expectations anon. Just go into it knowing that you might have a lot of time on your own and just be happy with your own company. Do you plan on staying in a hostel? If you really worry about being lonely staying at a hostel would probably be the first and best place to start and meet other solo travelers from there you guys can plan activities with each other.
>>
>>1272313
Travel isn't any different than life at home. Even if you are alone during the day you can make yourself comfy in your hostel bed and start shitposting away.

Im going solo for 4 weeks around Europe, because none of My Friends likes to travel.
This is actually my first big trip but i think it Will Go well. Just trying to be open and talk to People and stay at hostels.

the northern and eastern coast are the best places, but all of sardegna is really beautiful
>>
Gorroppu gorge is great. I really liked the cute old villages in the north, but maybe there are cute old villages in other parts too. I've never been south of Bosa.

I've got a piggyback question; what are some cool cities there? I've only spent time in Alghero and Olbia.
>>
>>1272247

What this guy said. For villages, Mamoiada and Fonni are pretty interesting and right in the center.

If you´re in the north anyway (i.e. Alghero and surroundings), also visit Stintino and Sassari. Both are good for at least an afternoon / evening. The first is a cutesy fishing village, pretty touristic but in an acceptable way. Sassari is older and in parts a bit more rundown, but still very much worth it.

Where are some places I can face some really terrible racism?

India, china, the usa, korea, russia, japan are in my experience the most racist.

But lets face it, every country is racist, i heard in south africa there is violence towards other africans
>>
>>1271790
Define "racism". In South America you will be called a "Chino" in Spanish countries and "Japa" in Brazil, but they really mean no harm, we just nickname everything based on appearence. if with local friends they may joke about little dick too, but Asians are generally welcomed

Hi guys :)
I will cross the Alps in August from Germany towards Italy. My equipment-shopping-tour is slowly coming to an end, so my focus now is to plan my tour.
I've got a MTB, I'm fairly fit (like riding 140km is no big deal, and one time a year I'm doping a MTB-race) but coming from a flat area and having a fully packed bike including everything needed for camping in the wild, I don't want to overdo it; so no steep slopes.
Has anyone done an "AlpX" with a touring bike? Which routes are advisable for a touring-bike ride?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1271732
Yes, as part of a longer tour this March. Rode the Via Claudia Augusta, a bike route from Venice to Augsburg, most of the way, which is good and took us along many pretty places. The bike paths in Austria were full of snow, so had to ride on the road. In the South Tyrol part of Italy, they cycle paths are beyond excellent, seriously, they would impress even a Dutch.

This route takes the Fernpass (1200 m) and Reschenpass (1550 m), which are both not particularly high and major routes for trans-alp traffic. It's easy, but if high, remote alpine scenery is what you are looking for you might want to take another pass.
>>
>>1271735
Thank you! :) I've stumbled across the Via Claudia Augusta moments ago.
I'm fine with the alpine experience and camping in the woods - I surely won't be able to do such tours as in the pic with my bike anyways. How long did it take? 5-6 days? Cuz after the Alps I want to head to the Tuscany crossing the Appenines and then backwards towards Munich if it's possible within a month.
>>
>>1271739
7 days from Verona to Kempten. But I'm really slow and that figure includes a day I didn't cycle much due to rain, so it can be done faster easily. 1 month sounds great for what you're planning.

Scenery like in the pic is actually not too hard to find. Find one of the many many MTB tracks and it most likely looks like this. The Alps are very scenic - I've ridden from China over the Tibetan plateau, Tianshan, Kunlunshan, the Pamirs, the Albroz and Zargoz ranges on this trip, and still found the Alps to be very very beautiful and impressive.

Got back from Belgium today.

Brussels- dirty shit-hole. Some parts in the very centre (grand place) are nice to look at, but full of tacky tourist restaurants selling awful Belgian food. 90% of the city reminded me of Egypt, bland and filthy. Airport is quite decent.

Leuven- Pretty nice, although quite small. The museum has a great bar, and there are lots of decent beer bars and nice quaint restaurants. Got drunk and went to a chess tournament, which was fucking wild.

Brugge - had to go here on a trip to Belgium I guess, and obviously it's a horrible tourist trap. Very pretty place, interesting architecture all around, but really not much to do aside from trying to dodge fat American tourists on the narrow sidewalks.

Gent- this place fucking ruled. Easily the best place we visited. A really good example of old and new coming together perfectly.

Is Tijuana a decent place to visit? I'm in San Diego and thinking of going there for the weekend, since the hotel prices are awful right now in SD.

Anything to do other than hookers and drink with American college kids?

How are the hookers?

Any other places around (Mexicali?) worth visiting?

Tijuanon here

Hookers are fugly and go from ~60$ and up. Although you're better off with the top tier putas at Hong Kong Nightclub, Adelitas and La Malquerida. All 3 located on calle Coahuila.

There's also plaza fiesta, where you can score some middle shelf at the Buda bar for 3 bucks per baggie.

Ensenada has some natural beauty and a decent nightlife, Mexicali is slightly better but hot as Phoenix, AZ.

Tijuana is as good as it gets, so I recommend you to stay in tj for the price but have hands down, fun in SD is unmatched. Culture, Nightlife, food.

SD is miles ahead in terms of quality of life

>SD is miles ahead in terms of quality of life
Ahh yes. I remember visiting Tijuana for the first time when I lived in San Diego. The difference is shocking. It's like, as soon as you cross that border, there's no mistaking that you're in a different country.

Kind of crazy when you consider that just a few miles away, you got some of the most expensive real estate in La Jolla and stuff.

I'm planning on visiting Maine around late July. I'll probably stay for 6-7 days. What should I check out while I'm there, like which cities, national parks, or beaches? What should I do while I'm there? My home base will probably be Portland, but I plan on renting a car for the duration of my trip. Also, I plan on moving to Maine, so, while I'm there, I want to get a good sense of what the state has to offer. Thanks.

Check out the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad Museum in Phillips, or the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum in Alna. These places preserve fragments of a 2 foot narrow gauge railroad system that once criss-crossed the state over a century ago. The one in Alna is not far from Portland and the coast.

Hey all,

Semi-experienced /trv/fag here. Been to about 35 countries since 2013 and lived overseas for a couple years.

I'm 23 and about to finish both of my BSc programs. I'm considering taking a motorbike trip from my home state of Michigan to either Panama or Argentina after I complete my undergraduate education or, alternatively, a masters.

A few questions I have for anybody with experience:

>Would it be more economical to purchase a bike in Paraguay or Chile and then ride northward to the United States? I'd rather keep whatever bike I use than re-sell it at the end of the trip, and I don't want to double the trip length by riding back.
>How much of an issue is two-wheeled transportation in Central America? The thought of transiting through El Salvador or Guatemala on back of a motorbike and with all my valuables strapped in seems somewhat unsettling.
>Do road use fees and whatnot constitute a large part of a motorbike trip budget, or are they fairly inconsequential?

I'd like to buy a used or almost-new Suzuki V-Strom 650, although I'm also considering the BMW F650GS and KLR 650.

If I go from the United States to South America with a bike, rather than from there to here, I'd probably buy a bike next summer and take the trip after I get a masters (2-3 years in the future; I want to do the Peace Corps in conjunction with an MS, then apply for PhD programs after a brief break).

Otherwise I'd do immediately after graduating. I have a work-from-anywhere income of a couple thousand dollars per month and am hoping to grow that to $3,000-ish per month by the time I leave.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help.

Oh - and for what it's worth, I'm already an experienced rider. I have my own bike in the States and have done some touring in Central America (on a rental) and India.

Hi OP. I'm in the middle of riding from SF to Ushuaia, Argentina.

>>Would it be more economical to purchase a bike in Paraguay or Chile and then ride northward to the United States? I'd rather keep whatever bike I use than re-sell it at the end of the trip, and I don't want to double the trip length by riding back.

It'd be extremely difficult because you're not a resident of those countries, so border paperwork becomes a massive headache. Why ride North anyway?

Just sell the bike in Argentina. It's what most people do.

>>How much of an issue is two-wheeled transportation in Central America? The thought of transiting through El Salvador or Guatemala on back of a motorbike and with all my valuables strapped in seems somewhat unsettling.

It was fantastic, I loved those countries going through the most. Much better than by car because roads just turn into dirt patches, and everywhere has cheap hotels with secure compounds you can turn into, or simply natural areas / parks you can camp out. Just ride smart. And avoid cities.

>>Do road use fees and whatnot constitute a large part of a motorbike trip budget, or are they fairly inconsequential?

road... use... fees? I haven't paid a single peso / dollar / quetzal in any kind of road use fee. Vehicle import fees? Yes, those exist, and they will try to shake you down too.

>I'd like to buy a used or almost-new Suzuki V-Strom 650, although I'm also considering the BMW F650GS and KLR 650.

All good bikes. Check out the two girls that did it on DRZ400s, those were fun too. If you go KLR, REPLACE THE DOOHICKEY otherwise like my buddy your engine will literally blow up in Toluca, Mexico and you gotta look for KLR parts which despite what 'muh kawasaki reliable' people tell you is IMPOSSIBLE to find in any part of Latin America.

Oh, you'll do fine then. It's extremely cheap. Gas is expensive. Bolivians won't sell it to you. Carry gas cans, so you can fill them up. Other expenses will be tires (just put on Heidenaus, they go so long), parts, perhaps. Take your time. Seriously. There's way more to see than you can do in a year's worth. Take two years if you can.

Got a plan for the Darien Gap yet?
>>
>>1265700

Thanks for the response.

I'm not really sure what I was on about with road use fees. I've never crossed a border with a personal vehicle before, excepting between the United States and Canada.

I do remember a Serbian driver I'd hitchhiked with having to scrounge around for a few Euros to pay some fee upon entering Bulgaria. I seem to recall that some countries levy some sort of tax or fee, on top of selling mandatory insurance policies, but I could be mis-remembering.

>Why ride north?

Dunno, senpai. I guess I just have this sentimental idea of keeping the bike I crossed continents on.

Plus, I'd have to buy another bike when I got back home.

>doohickey

Kek, thanks for the advice.

My strongest inclination at the moment is towards the DL650. So far as I can tell, it's a rock solid bike that'll perform fantastically with only a few minor aftermarket additions and adjustments.

Looking for suggestions for a last-minute trip starting really soon, lasting about two weeks.

Any suggestions of places in central/south america that are reasonably cheap to get to from the US and are cool to see in July?

Most of the obvious: Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc - seem to have awful hot/humid/rainy weather in July.

Right now I'm considering Colombia (Bogota/Pereira mostly since I haven't been there) or Panama. Any others?

I'm looking for outdoor activites, good culture, and easy gorgeous women (or at least hot hookers). I'm an obvious gringo but pretty close to fluency in Spanish.

Help /trv/,

At first I thought it was a coincidence, but now I think it's something more malicious. I'm half way through a month long trip through Europe and I've noticed people spitting as they walk by me too many times to be a coincidence at this point. Is this a "fuck you" gesture or am I just crazy? Could they be catching onto the fact that I'm not from around here when I'm speaking English or have my backpack on? I've been doing my best to not be disrespectful or loud, and I can't think of anything else that would generate this kind of reaction from people if it's a real gesture.

It doesn't seem to be at me or in my direction, but they spit on the ground as we walk by. Does anyone have any insight?

>>
>>1272069
I do the same (Germany) just to clean my mouth sometimes and when i did it abroad in south america a burger was outraged at me that i would spit on the ground lmao

keep in mind that train stations attract not the best kind of people though (mentally unstable tend to hang out there)
>>
>>1272073
It's probably just my imagination then. We've been walking a few miles a day so I guess the chances of it happening are more likely since spitting is just something people do.
>>
In some euro countries spitting on the ground is considered "normal" (they do this in.albania i think) and immigrants from Asia and middle east are huge ground-spitters, especially chinese and algerians/moroccans. I noticed it's not common between black people and subsaharian african.

I really think it's a subhuman and disgusting habit and, but no worries OP, chances are no one is doing this to piss you off. They are just clearing they dirty.mouth.

Where are you exactly?

Hello I need some advice about bringing tools through customs on currently in the US
On my twentieth birthday I am purchasing a 300$ carving set, two 100$ spokeshaves, a 50p dollar set of planes, and a small 80$ table saw
Soon after I am sailing to Spain
From there I will walk to France, I have spoken to several buildings owners about potentially purchasing their property and opening a shop
Would it be better to ship the tools directly to France or can I carry them with me
I would enjoy being able to work while I travel and the endurance training of carrying them seems to benefit me

Of course I will not have a blade in the table saw but is the rest manageable

Wow, okay, you seem like cool dude. What's your business idea? Are you like a wandering handyman of sorts? If you're honestly walking then you probably don't have to be worried, i just biked through six countries in western Europe without seeing a single border control, and not once showing any ID.

Same if you're arriving by a normal "private" sailing boatouldn't be any controls in the port.
>>
>>1272059
You should be fine to take them in a boat. But tell us, how are you planning to sail to spain? This sounds like a pretty neat adventure!
>>
>>1272134
I'm not OP but you can just sail straight across you know? I'd personally not do it with a boat much below 30ft but it's not an issue as long as you're prepared.

You usually depart from Portugal, take a break at the Azores and then head straight for the Caribbean
