Anyone have any good experience with homestays? im thinking about trying it this year in Japan but never did anything like it before.
I know its not as comfortable as a hotel but I wanted to try it for the culture experiences.

>cultural experience

m8, I'd hate to burst your bubble, but you should really not try to glorify things that you have no experience with
>>
>>1274932
what do you mean? i realize its just paying someone to stay at their house, but i imagine they live vastly different than im used to
>>
>>1274950
You're honestly better off just doing airbnb's or hostels if you want to get closer to the culture. To be quite honest you'll probably get closer to the "culture" via hostels and such, most hosts aren't going to want to spend all waking hours with you. To be closer to the culture, probably shouldn't even be spending time inside anyways.

You really think the homestay host is going to give a shit about being as authentic as possible to the 100th person they were a host for?

Yes... stray away from montego bay.. negril is laid back and the beach there is amazing.. the people are cool as hell... if you get away from the resort areas be prepared for slums poverty and beggars... can recommend negril for sure and heard ocho rios is chill as hell too

t. sandals pr rep

kingston is perfectly safe for tourists. everyone there has their own thing going and doesn't give fuckall about random whiteys, unlike the cruise ship ports montego bay and ocho rios where everyone's life is hustling. kingston's murder rates are almost exclusively due to gang blood feuds, and something tells me op doesn't look like a jamaican gangster. south coast was the best part of the island imo-no one there is trying to braid your hair or sell you weed.

I'm going to Washington DC this week.
Problem is, I've been there over a dozen times by now and have seen all of the monuments and most of the museums.
Is there anything cool and easy to miss within the metro area?
Really good places to eat?
This is also my first time going where I'm not part of a group of my family or anything.

Go to a museum you wouldn't normally care to.

You haven't been to them all.

Alexandria
Dupont Circle

Really nigger, if you just go to the mall you're missing everything
>>
>>1274805
What's there to do? I was probably gonna check out Dupont.
>>1274778
So like the African American museum which apparently takes forever to get into and nothing else.

Is the Vicksburg National Military Park really nice?

I'm kind of interested in visiting it, but it would probably be a two day trip (back-and-forth) from where I am in Florida and I'm not sure if it's worth it.
>>
>>1274717
I think it's nice. lots of interesting history. Its fun to ride a bike up and down the hills to traverse the park. If you want to hike around that's fun too. May want to go when it's cooler.
>>
Alabama neighbor here. My only problem with Mississippi is the fucking roads.

Other than that, biloxi is fun. Oxford is a fun college scene, especially during football season.
I dated a girl who went to Ole Miss. Had a blast every time I went up there.

What do you guys make of the way travelling is sold by bloggers and Instagrammers?

I appreciate that what you see is highly filtered and excludes the messy parts, however to me it's really irritating.

I wouldn't know. I'm ridiculously old fashioned, especially considering my age. I don't use any social media,so I just have external hard drives full of travel photos and videos, I guess it feels like a shame not to share them so I might start a blog or upload them to an Instagram account or something.

I didn't realize that such institutions were being used to market traveler but I can definitely see how they could be so that makes sense to me.

I usually choose my next destination based upon if I've been to the continent and a combination of safety and affordability. After that the largest influencer and where I choose to go next and probably movies or video games to be honest, if I see something that looks cool I'm inspired to go there myself.

Travelling to Valencia (ESP) soon.

Any recommendations regarding accomodation, must sees and hidden gems? Generally, my travel companion and I are interested in nature, hiking, but also beach and water related activities.

Also, what are things to avoid: tourist traps, criminal areas, etc? Cheers!

I only spent there 2 days and from the experience it was a very comfy city. Touristic but on a way lower level then Madrid or Barcelona.
Some organized gypsie beggars and the usual fake good sellers but the police seem to hunt them down at the beach and in the city center.
The city beach was comfy, restaurants with pretty good food everywhere
>paella feels like a scam in the city center and at the beach, 2 people minimum, 15-23€ per person for a bit of rice and the smallest amount of meat I ever saw
>>
>>1274599
2 days are enough for Valencia: one for the City of Arts and other for the Old Town. And I recommend you to rent a bike: the city is plain and subway is worse than Madrid and Barcelona.
>>
My friends whove been there always recommend to rent a bike there

I'm gonna go to some National Parks for the first time and I live in California so mainly stuff on the west coast of the USA.

Anyone have any experiences/stories?
Favorite or Least favorite parks?
State Parks are also welcome to discuss about and you can also recommend parks in other states for future reference

Stop going to national parks and start going to national forests

And get /out/
>>

This.
Alaskan here, chugach national forest is an hour from my house and hiking around the trails is beyond comfy. I try to go out there every few weeks and just spend the day walking around then I find a nice spot by the river and watch the water race by.

Hi all, yesterday I became a CELTA certified teacher and I'm looking to travel and teach English in Thailand. Does anybody know where a good place to start is in terms of looking for a job there? I'm only 19 and thus have no teaching experience besides the mandatory 20 hours that I needed to complete the CELTA course. Will I still be able to find a job there or am irrevocably fucked?

Have you considered Vietnam instead of Thailand? Wages are basically double with similar (if not a little cheaper in Vietnam) cost of living. Most people I know teaching in Thailand work their ass off and can barely afford to travel in their holidays. I think it's different if you have experience and get a better job but for a noob I think Vietnam is the way to go. In Vietnam it's not uncommon for people working in Hanoi or Saigon to be able to save between 500-1000USD per month while living a super comfy lifestyle and with a CELTA you would literally find a job in those cities within an hour of getting of the plane if you wanted. Lmk if you have any more questions
>>
>>1274417
Props for actually getting a CELTA OP

I've met plenty of ESL teachers are scum who don't have any passion for teaching, they don't have any qualifications whatsoever and coast along in Asia. Hearing stories about when they are screaming AT the children to shut up makes me want to deck them in the face. They have no classroom management skills and put no effort into improving their skills as a teacher.

Good luck and god speed OP.

I'm really interested in getting to see Turkey. Seems like a beautiful place with rich culture and history. But from what I understand, it's been under some political turmoil lately.

Is it safe to go there, particularly Istanbul? Also, I'm Jewish and spent a year working for an American company in Israel, and I don't want to risk getting beheaded...

I love Andalucia, personally. Seville is an amazing city, but you owe it to yourself to go to Malaga, Cordoba, Ronda, Granada, Jerez de la Fronteira, and maybe Marbella if you want to feel rich.

Be very careful when in those lands, young man!

i only have three days, and dont want to be in the car the whole time. what i don't want is to be around a bunch of old uk ex pats gettin their tan on. Might just end up going to Granada and brave the rest of the tourists to see Alhambra. Also want to see Ronda.

Syria, iraq, mali, yemen and the congo all have some beautiful parts, besides those huge deserts.

I fucked up /trv/.

I accidentally booked two non-refundable tickets on an AA flight for the wrong week. 24 hours have passed and I can no longer change my tickets for free.

Is there any way around their absurd $200 per ticket change fee?

You can call customer service and bitch but double booking and not noticing till after 24 hours is basically a no deal. If lucky you MIGHT get a small credit but that is it.

It's not japanese, google translate was picking it up as chinese something about empty guru from what I was drawing.

Japanese "king" would read like キング and emperor like
天皇

Chances are it's saying that he is an airhead or just random words
>>
It doesn't mean anything in Japanese

空戈道武

The first word means sky or emptiness(it's the 'kara' in 'karate' which means 'empty hand', then spear, then way or street, then martial-something.

If the third and the fourth character were flipped it would mean martial arts but it's wrong.

It's like someone wanted to go for something martial arts karate related.
Mixing up Karate and Bushido and whatever.
