This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I can't decide between D&D 4th and 5th edition for my upcoming campaign for fairly new people.

4th looks like it has more options for everyone across the board starting from level 1 and more meaningful powers and it looks like the monster customization rules allow the DM for a lot of fun. It looks like it would fit my players, who only have a board game background, more.

On the other hand, 5e looks much simpler and easier to run and lends itself more to theatre of the mind kinda play, being more representative of the way I've always played RPGs prior.

What are your experiences with either system?

I prefer 4e, especially using the electronic tools and some common houserules.

But 5e really is simpler and more streamlined, and that also counts a lot.
>>
I only DM'ed 4e once, but it was a negative experience. Fights were too long, with hit points on both sides being way out of control, I dislike the fact they took magic mart from 3.5 and made it even worse. Another poor choice was them deciding - hey, our players can't keep track all those fifteen buffs and spells they have on them at any given time. So let's make all those buffs last one round only, that'll simplify things!

5e, on the other hand, is very simple, it's fluid. Advantage/disadvantage system is a really welcome change, as are concentration rules. Combat is usually really quick too.

>Fights were too long, with hit points on both sides being way out of control,
Was that before or after MM3 math fixes?

> I dislike the fact they took magic mart from 3.5 and made it even worse

I think it's a LOT better. By admitting that the treadmill exists, you can focus on making it fun by adding secondary benefits to your shit. Either way, there's an inherent bonus optional rule that removes the necessity for magic items (except armor IIRC).

>5e, on the other hand, is very simple, it's fluid. Advantage/disadvantage system is a really welcome change, as are concentration rules.

This is true as well.

>Combat is usually really quick too

I have found it gets a lot more long/boring at higher levels (but I was playing a rogue so w/e). At least in 4e the combat is long because you need 3-4 rounds for your decisions/tactics to be sorta meaningful. In 5e, combat is just long because... high level enemies are supposed to have lots of HP?

If only there was some game that tried to combine the best of both...

Is there any setting where Orcs aren't shit? The only universe where Orcs are competent I know about is Gothic where they won the war against humans. What's even the point of a villain race that isn't dangerous? Also why they are always technologically backwards? The original Orcs made by Tolkien actually could build machines and they were ''delighted by engines, wheels and explosions'' but in for example Warcraft they are almost cavemen. Fucking fail of a race just like dwarves.

>but in for example Warcraft they are almost cavemen
Eh? Up through the Third War, yeah, but in current WoW the only races outpacing the orcs in war technology are the gnomes and goblins, who are natural mad scientists.

The orcs were the second race to embrace supplemental steel armor in the construction of military fortifications (after the dwarves) and commonly employ mechanized forces in their current military.

Hell, the entire Warlords of Draenor expansion revolved around an orc going back in time and dragging the entire race forcefully into the industrial age.
>>
>>52304448
>What's even the point of a villain race that isn't dangerous?
To be cut down for exp. If they were a playable race more often you would see more nuanced orcs.
>>
>>52304448
IIRC in Shadow of the Demon Lord the Orcs uprising was the cause of the Empire falling apart totally so there's that.

How would you depict and/or justify the existence of a race of aliens who are technologically advanced and very (if perhaps not entirely) pacifistic, but without being Organian "godlike" advanced (so they can't just Clarkemagic all their enemies away to explain their continued existence)?

Space is incredibly vast and barring needing some sort of unobtanium only found in certain regions, there's no real need to war for control of it other than xenophobic paranoia.

Whether xenophobic paranoia is going to be the better choice in the long run, well. Depends. Might could run into these guys, might could run into something like the Qu.
>>
>>52304004
You said it yourself: "not ENTIRELY pacifistic". Just because they'd RATHER avoid carnage doesn't mean it's always feasible. The Abbai from Babylon 5 are perfect for your purposes. Gentle, pacifistic, and highly advanced, their military technology focuses on defense and less-than-lethal takedowns (they produce the best stun guns in the setting), they use drones as much as possible to limit the loss of life in combat, but when push comes to shove they understand that sometimes you could save more lives by lasering an aggressor who can't be reasoned with back into the stone age than by letting them run rampant.

What's a good way to use monsters that have been memed to death, without them looking dumb/unscary?
Pic related is a good example of how I like to convey werewolves, since it makes them seem actually horrific, as opposed to the big hairy beasts that aren't any scarier than a bear that they usually are.
What's a good depiction of other monsters, such as zombies, vampires, ghosts, witches, ETC. that I can use, that won't make people go "lol a werewolf? he just a little itty bitty puppy, Xd"

Go back and research the origins of these monsters. Many classic monsters have much more creative and creepy origins then their modern forms. Like skin-walkers, ghouls, and the like.

For instance, the first vampire stories dealt with bloated, gluttonous corpses rising from their graves to feed on blood before reburying themselves to avoid detection. Would you want a rotting fat man sucking at your jugular?

what do they eat? or more importantly who?

what really makes them horrifying?

i'll start with my own creation

A priapist is created when a root of corruption is swallowed by a male rapist. besides the usual mutations of the body becoming infested with black oily roots over time, a priapist's member becomes engorged and hardened like woord, and begins to continually secrete a yellowish substance.

A priapist retains most of its mental faculties, except for the fact that his desires are now overpowering, even overbearing his sense of survival in some cases, and that priapists can still get controlled by rootmasters and other higher corrupted.

A priapist, when not given orders, will always try to seek out the nearest sentient creature that isnt corrupted by Root. upon finding a sentient creature, a priapist will proceed to rape, and subsequently partially devour it. the secretions of the priapist's penis facilitate the second part of this ritual by acting as a numbing and paralyzing poison, while the priapist's strength often takes care of the first.

A priapist is very durable and strong, and will take a lot of punisment before finally stopping its rampage. because of this, priapists are often used as shock troops by the armies of the corrupted. seeing as most priapists were formerly soldiers from penal legions, they are stereotypically portrayed as wearing the signature black cloak and vest, but without pants.

The Sabinite Remnants, hands down (and my setting has a shit-load of spooky/evil shit).

The best way to explain them, though, is through a story of their "destruction."

>For decades, the Sabinite clans along the Sabine River plagued the various Texan and Louisianan nations/tribes as a constant threat to their security. Believed to be one of the many descendants of the vanquished Witch Cults of Carthage, they were brutally horrific raiders led by all-male warlocks that took whatever they wanted, when they wanted it, and no one east of the Brazos or west of the Mississippi could truly prevent their raids for over thirty years. They most commonly demanded infant slaves to be fed as sacrifices to their terrible god, the Great Dragon, they also demanded guns, gasoline, metal armor, food, fertile women (sterile women were worthless to them) and young children to serve as new slave-soldiers in their clan armies.

>One day, a great Warlock King by the name of the Bone Lord was struck by a vision of the Great Dragon, and sent out a call for all males of 14+ years of age to join him in a great crusade against the East Texas Empire and their blasphemously Christian ways. In mid-October of 2278, he strode ahead of an army of over 30,000 men under arms, of whom 10,000 were horse cavalry and 200 bore cannibalized Power Armor with heavy weapons, while 100 APC's and light tanks brought up the rear. In a massive blitzkrieg assault, he led his force on a forced night march into the Wildwood Forest, and sought to smash aside the fledgling Empire through a dedicated thrust in its gut.

>Not a single Sabinite emerged from those woods.

Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1970. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

I'd be careful about how you do that. The players very well might decide to sell the ship to the first real buyer who comes along and just walk away from the whole problem with a big pile of cash.
>>
>>52277073
The implication is that the people after the ship will space the players (or at least interrogate them), not provide monetary compensation for this unique ship.
>>
>>52279687

It doesn't seem likely that all interested parties would go to "space the lawful owners and steal the ship" as their first choice. Governments and large corps would likely send them offers of financial compensation if they bring the ship to a scout base/naval base/corp station or something.

Do not use fumbbl secret league teams. They are for the most part unbalanced and daemonettes. That said if your league is fine with fanfic unofficial teams go ahead. But Fumbbl secret league was made by one guy who made like 2 actually good teams.

Frenchfag reporting in. I backed for a Deluxed book, a map, an ST screen and the chibi bookmarks (because why not).

Are there any anons from europe around? I thought it'd be a good idea to keep each other updated on how delivery's going.

Apparently people in Canada have been recieving their books for a few days. Right now I haven't even gotten an email yet.

What are the news on the old continent?

The friendzone one from the pact with Mara. Best excuse ever to blue-ball your entire Circle, and let it fuel your power.

The prayer offering one for the Ifrit Lord, because burning everything of value your party finds for moar power makes you lots of friends.

The limit break one from the Nightmares initiation, where you're rewarded for carefully goading your Circlemates into limit break so you can draw power from their angst.

Hmm, is there maybe a theme here?
