Which side do fancy shoulder pads go?
So how do you fluff Chaos guys as anything but "lol we worship le ebin EBIL DERK GODS Xdddd!"
The gimmick can be interesting once or twice but if they're whole schtick is just being evil...? What kind of motivations do the traitors have as they fall further to Chaos, aside from just being insane?
The tech level of the world is that of mid-iron age. Metal tools and weapons are common, but well made steel is highly prized and rare to come by.
The most abundant race in the World is the humble dwarf.
Dwarves are far spread and diverse as they come, in skin and hair colour, in architecture and agriculture.
But one thing remains the same, their height and broadness of shoulder. They are a sturdy bunch, most men can take a rock to the face without flinching, that’s how they’ve gotten so far.
Dwarf magic generally consists of etching a rune or two into an inanimate object. Some take it further and etch markings into their own skin causing scars, this grants them power but is frowned upon in most civilised areas.
Two more races are Goblins and Trolls. They are as diverse as Dwarves and are not considered evil.

Damnit, I really need to finish working on the Secret Arts of Performance loresheet I was working on for Legends of the Wulin.
Because in a system where scholars and courtiers are already capable of using their skills in combat alongside Kung fu, why not make performance combat (drawing inspiration from modern professional wrestling, roman gladiatorial bouts and various other forms of traditional ritual duels) a mechanical option?

Was trying to describe the old idea I once saw on tg - of a Steve-Irwin inspired campaign in a Monster Hunter style setting, especially if you throw in viewing the world like he did in the old movie - through the lens of his conservation efforts and protecting the wildlife.
So I caught myself wondering, what class would Steve Irwin be? I wanted to say Druid at first, but Steve was a showman - so I was thinking Bard. Then I remembered crossclassing was a thing, so was thinking Bard/Druid.
I am not a smart otter, so I submit the question to the Court of /tg/.
>>52314937
Monk too, he wrestled wild animals into submission without (usually, sadly) hurting himself or the animal, which takes skill.
To maybe some weird Druid/Bard/Monk abomination.

Niggers and Jews
Has there ever been a better depiction of goblins than John Howe's concepts for LotR?
Just browsed a shitload of Frazetta's work and it started to dawn on me...
Orcs seem like they are the heirs of Conan in popular fantasy. When I think of orcs in Warcraft, Half-Orcs in D&D, Pathfinder, etc. it made me realize that they fill the "cunning barbarian" trope that Conan established. Sure, you do occasionally have human barbarians in fantasy... but it seems like orcs are just more widespread. If you're playing 5e, Half-Orcs are THE race for barbarian.
If you play WoW, orcs have that classic Conan-inspired look that was pioneered by Frazetta. Blizzard even goes out of their way to get the best Frazetta-inspired artist on the market (Alex Horley) to draw their orcs. If you went up to your average Joe and asked him what he thought a typical barbarian in a typical fantasy world would look like, 9/10 times I'm sure he'd say a hulking, green orc with an axe in his hands.
What do you think? Am I completely off the mark here?
Also, if we could keep the grognard bitching to a minimum that'd be awesome. There are dozens of other threads you can bitch about "proper orcs" in. I just want to discuss the trend and the parallels between Conan.
>>52313815
I'll grant that the WC orcs in particular have the same broad noble savage concept as Conan . I think there are important differences though. Conan was a human, that makes him one of us. The Orcs and Half-Orcs you're referencing are, if not 'the other', then at least 'another'.
With orcs I think there's also always a suggestion of an essentially bestial side that you didn't really get with Conan. The Orcs in WC have demonic ties. Half-Orcs are just that - only half human, with full blood orcs being the good old 'always CE' killthugs that exist to be villains.
>>52313959
>Conan was a human, that makes him one of us.
I think you're putting too much emphasis on humanity.
Lots of people identify and relate with dwarves, elves, and even orcs/half-orcs, among other things. People don't really care as much about whether a character is human or not anymore.
Look at James Cameron's Avatar. The Na'vi weren't human and yet the world (our world/real life, that is) sympathized with them over the humans.
I just don't think people care as much about something having to be human anymore.
Lads, I'm going to be having my first D&D game in a few days, and I'm going to be playing as a cleric.
Any tips?
Which edition?
>>52311740
What edition? What kind of cleric?
Ultimately, though, have fun. Make you and the DM both have a similar picture of what sort of world you're going into in your heads. I hate it when I'm trying to run a supernatural mystery campaign and the PCs turn it into a murderhobo crusade.
Oh yeah, avoid murderhoboing. It's not fun for very long.
>>52311793
>>52311805
5e, I've decided on a Cleric in the knowledge Domain, with a background as a sage.
And apparently it's going to be some political intrigue, so I'm looking forward to more roleplaying and less rollplaying.
To give context, the system would be used for a Monster hunter game, with usually no more than one or two enemies being fought at once, simplifying the system a bit (Would be much more complex for larger numbers of enemies). I have changed the system slightly after a suggestion to make it more risk/reward based which I agreed with.
The current idea is this:
> you start a turn with the monster giving a slight indication of what it intends to do ("The monster begins to widen its stance")
> the combatants then tell what they intend to do, going in reverse order of initiative (With initiative being rerolled each turn), the monster can be earlier/later in the order
> Players can leave parts of their turn unused, allowing for reactive actions
> Reactions could be restricted to smaller movements/dodge-rolls, larger movements can be done if done pre-reaction time
How does this combat system concept sound? Any problems with it/improvements that could be made?
>>52310714
What about foregoing the base stats and d20 style gameplay and utilizing a more narrative approach? I do this because I hate massive bookkeeping for every event, although to do so you have to be a painfully neutral dm. Here is a (poorly written) example.
"The rathalos roars in fury as its heaving bulk turns towards you. You cursed quietly to yourself, hoping that it would have remained oblivious until your pitfall was properly set. The soundtrack rippled along the grass before the blast tore into your ears, causing you to buckle in pain, the thin hide of your helm doing little to dampen the sound. With glowing spittle leaking from the corners of its mouth, the rathalos reared its crowned head back and formed a ball kg flame within its gullet"
Choose an action
A) dodge
B) Block
C) other
After the player(s) select an action have them roll based on the difficulty of the action and the stats you've been keeping offscreen. To continue with the example:
The player(s) vote to block the fireball, you know they are equipped with a sword and shield and are wearing hunter armor.
The players roll (I like 1D100) with three possible outcomes: success, partial success, critical fail. With each degree of outcome harder to roll based on the difficulty of the action. Bringing your shield to bear is relatively easy thus should succeed most of the time (50-100). As the actions complete and the effects resolved you can set up the next chain of events in the narrative without disrupting flow.
Since monster hunter plays out less like final fantasy and more fluid I'd incorporate your initiative system into chains of actions taken by players. So if the players elect to block and then counter with their sns they must pass their action roll and then beat the monsters initiative roll (which should change based on what he did, charging for example should lower his initiative significantly).
Let me know what you think or any questions
>>52310978
I've actually been thinking of mostly foregoing the classic d20 approach as well, looking at a more static system (Damage on attacks would be static and tied to the attack used/hitzone hit [attacks would be split into three values, one for weak zones, one for normal zones, and one for armored zones])
The system that you've suggested could probably be implemented into the suggested turn based thing pretty seamlessly desu, used for things like Blocking/Dodging/attacking, so reall,y thanks for this a ton.
With this said, what do you think of the system I have in the OP? do you think it would be too complex to use in an RPG?
>>52311712
>>52310978
Reading your reply again I realize you mentioned incorporating the system into "Chains of actions". Can you give an example of how this might work with multiple players?
