People still feel a connection with their 'Homelands', that is undeniable. I have never set foot in the country of my heritage, but i am definitely a member of the culture, if removed by a stage. I was raised by my traditional grandparents, in a different culture, but i value similar things as they do (they raised me) so really i'm from both. Now the other half;

Genetics DO play a part in development of personality, as well as physical developments. My lost brother (mum had him when she was 16, he went to an orphanage) is VERY similar to myself in behavior and mannerisms, even though i was raised differently. He's also similar and height and build. But that can be explained by the siblingness. What can't be; our love for our 'countries' food. He got raised by whitebread ham n cheese bullshit, never really having developed past a child taste in food. I love to cook and can make pretty much anything under the sun, and you'll love to eat it.
