Dumb DM Ideas.jpg

Hey /tg/

I have a really dumb idea, but dumb ideas can be fun. I want to run a game (more than likely, it will be a one-on-one with a few players) based on exploration; specifically, I want to emulate recent open world videogames: (less like) Horizon: Zero Dawn and (more like) Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

So, how does one go about creating a world (or at least, like… 20,000 square mile continent?) that is worth exploring? How do I make the world feel wild and untamed?

Also, there are other questions that are less important but could still be addressed: are there systems that handle this particularly well? (Besides GURPS, GURPSposter.) BRP and WH40K RPGs that use percentile rolls come to mind. D&D/PF/d20 could work, but I’d prefer something that’s class-less. I would not be opposed to Savage Worlds. I’d prefer not to have to do the tinkering required for Hero System.

Also, I’m going to start searching for landscapes that are interesting and bumping the thread with those.

So this was ok, certainly better than most Black Library material. But a few notes:
Why doesn't Black Library just make their own stories? If they're not going to adapt the stories told in the codex, why not just make their own since that's what they're basically doing anyway. This one was particularly bad in that regard: aside from the name "Hollow Worlds", and the forces involved, this story has literally nothing in common with the associated fluff entry.

Also How did I not foresee the Space Wolf named Sindri defecting to the Red Corsairs?

Well, the whole purpose of the Space Marine Battles series is to turn codex footnotes into actual stories (YMMV on success).

They seem more tied to existing stuff at present, but they've never shied away from inventing things. Eisenhorn, Gaunt's, all that jazz. ADB is working on some Emperor's Spears stuff, and Robbie Macniven is writing some new White Scars material for his next book, so plenty of new ship on the way, too.
>>
>>52327382
To be honest, while I said it was particularly bad in that regard I didn't mind. The Hollow Worlds presented in the book were far more interesting a setting than the one described in the codex. One of the very few cases where I think Black Library retconned something for the better. So it's not a complaint in this case like I said, just a note.

Variant chess played at the chess club.

Where you had shit like "Giraffes" and "Elephants" and stuff, who were usually combinations of two other pieces (IE moveset of a rook OR a knight) or some variation on a knight (IE it moves 4 spaces then 1 to the side; or 3 then 2; etc. instead of 2 then 1)
>>
>>52328351
Oh, and "Knightrider" who was like a knight, except it could jump multiple times in one turn (in one direction only) until it captures a piece.

C. As a general rule with Pokemon cards, if you have to ask, they're worthless. You would already know if you had one of the extremely few cards worth anything.

The fact that you're a moron, perhaps?

Strength potion are not steroids, sperglord, and if you were able to actually think you'd realize that.

Strength potions work immediately. Steroids do not.

Potions work automatically and regardless of the character's other actions. Steroids do not work automatically and only help you build muscle mass through exercise. Drink the potion and you're stronger. Inject steroids, but fail to exercise, and your strength remains the same.

The results of potions are usually not permanent. Once the potion wears off, you lose the benefit. The results of steroids can be permanent if you continue to perform the exercises.

TL;DR - You're a fucking idiot and you should be ashamed to have posted that question.
>>
>>52326115
Steroids don't simply make you stronger. They make your body repair faster so you can grow muscle faster at a higher training tempo with less down time.

Someone who takes steroids and doesn't train won't put on a lot of muscle. They will lean out a lot, but training is most definitely necessary.

Honest question: Does 4/tg/ still hate Kender with a violent, burning passion, of have you lot calmed down a bit on the subject?
Only asking for research purposes, I don't have designs on making a Kender character for a game with fa/tg/uys.

Yes.

We still hate these fuckers.
>>
>>52324752
I don't really hate Kender, I hate the kind of players who like to play Kender. They're a means for That Guy to rob people blind while insisting "That's what my character would do!" and "I'm still Neutral Good guys, that's just how Kender act!". Their lore indicates that if you act all doe-eyed and innocent nobody will begrudge you for being a total asshole and, say, taking the fighter's healing potions and throwing them in the river because you wanted to know what it would sound like. Their lore isn't all that worse than, say, your homebrewed Kitsune monstrosity but it just encourages players to be assholes.

If you want to play a Kender in a game you should make it clear to the other players and the GM that you're not going to steal ANYTHING. Don't play any classes like Rogue or Bard, stick to something like Fighter or Paladin if you can. I'd recommend playing something like a wandering ex-soldier, traveling the countryside and doing odd jobs to help people. Something that embodies the wanderlust and curiosity of your race while keeping your hands away from other people's packs. Playing an honourable and chivalrous Kender who wouldn't even touch something without the owner's permission... that would probably be the best way to go.
>>
>>52324752
They're awful. It's like one of the game devs let their 10 year old make a race after watching the animated Hobbit movie and corrected it grammatically and it got shipped without any checking or revision. They have no redeeming factors that can't immediately be thwarted by other aspects and fail in comparison to comparable things.

Legend of the Wulin, but that requires
1) Rewriting all the lore sheets to fit the setting and refluffing everything you didn't rewrite
2) Learning LotW in the first place and convincing your players to do the same.

#1 is tedious, #2 is madness.

Would Legends of the Wulin be able to handle the combination of technological integration and superhuman ability inherent in Post Human Martial Arts
What I know of the game is gathered from what little I have heard here on /tg/
>>
>>52318487

LotW would likely require abstracting it and making it mostly fluff, using loresheets and similar- Packages of fluff and mechanics that can be purchased alongside more conventional things like Kung fu techniques- to represent them.

Also, >>52318302 put it in short but to be explicit-

LotW is a hard game to learn. It makes a lot of strange assumptions about how things work, counterintuitive to a lot of what you'd expect from a RPG (A simple example is that in LotW you roll first, declare actions second, the inverse of almost every RPG I'm aware of).

This is made even more of a barrier to entry by the frankly appalling editing and layout of the core book. If you can actually get the damn thing running, it's a magnificent system that I've personally used for sci-fi action stuff before now, but actually getting to that point is a lot of effort.

So I posted asking about this before but didn't get much of a response. Reposting in hope that some other helpful souls will notice. Basically I'm attempting to create an RPG with a more realistic, reactive combat system than a traditional turn-based system. After thinking a lot, seeking advice from /tg/, and reading around, I realised my only option was a count-up system wherein combat progresses in a tick by tick manner and each person chooses an action which has a certain tick cost. Then as the tick progresses, actions play out in the order of their action speed. Envision the following scenario.

>Player 1 could begin casting a spell at enemy X on the first tick, which has a tick cost of 4.
>Player 2 chooses to fire his pistol, a tick cost of 2, at an enemy Y.
>After two ticks have passed, P2 shoots Y, assuming Y hasn't used those two ticks to move out of line of sight or something. P1 is still in the process of casting a spell however so they have no "turn"/action yet.
>P2 now chooses their next action, to run, for a tick cost of say 1, over to protect P1 from X who is currently charging towards P1 for a melee strike
>P2 arrives after the tick passes and now chooses to adopt a defensive stance for an indeterminate amount of ticks, they may choose to cancel this at any future tick and take an action if they so wish
>On the next tick P1 finally casts their spell and kills X, hurray.

All very straightforward agreed? What I'm really here to ask though is if any of you have played this type of system before (I believe Hackmaster is one such system). If you have, what was your experience? Did you find it better or worse than other systems? What were the pros/cons? Those who haven't are also welcome to offer opinions. How would you feel about playing such a system? What problems or edge cases can you imagine? Thanks in advance guys, I can't really playtest this yet as I haven't enough of a system behind it and nobody to playtest with anyway.
34 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
In the last thread it was suggested than instead of using a count-up system (which could lead to maths headaches) that each individual attack simply be a countdown to 0 without the need to have a global tick to keep track of how long combat has progressed. To me this seemed like a genius suggestion but can any of you see an issue with this? I feel like I'm overlooking some fatal flaw.
>>
Also, to be clear I have already examined a number of other systems in detail so I'd rather you didn't just point me to Exalted/Scion or whatever. I've already looked at Hackmaster, Aces and Eights, Shadowrun, Savage Worlds, Runequest, and Feng Shui to get this idea cobbled together.
>>
>>52315858
I've played Hackmaster a lot, and I really like the count-up system. Helps ameliorate the interminable "waiting-for-my-next-turn" delay.
