Do I need to pass a WILL test to cut my own member or was the DM pulling my leg?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Of course it will take strength of will from your character to do such a thing so of course the DM is not pulling your leg. Many people like to avoid dice rolling in games since they feel it disrupt the flow of role-playing though, but that's more of a matter of how you decide to play the game then relating to the specific situation you're in. But the general rule is that it's up to the DM since that is the person doing almost all of the work setting up the game.

How much of session time do you spend on adventuring in dungeons, and how much on less dangerous activities, such as drinking in the taverns or courting your waifus?

no seriously the party was super-miniaturized and we're sailing through her blood vessels in a wooden submarine to kill some evil demon-parasites that godmagic doesnt work on

>How much of session time do you spend on adventuring in dungeons, and how much on less dangerous activities, such as drinking in the taverns

Depends on what all is happening, if they are already in town normally half of our four to five hour session is drinking, going to stores, getting the next quest or intel.

If they are already in a dungeon normally a full session to get through most if not all.

>courting your waifus?

Keep that shit in pfg

Your DM made an episode of the Magic School Bus into a dungeon, I'm not sure if I should be impressed or sad for you.

I think a lot of the "issues" that pop up in d&d, and brings hate from tg, is that game can be played 3 ways.

method 1: A combat game, where every point counts, and the 'adventure', is a series of battles with little to no RP or plot

method 2: The game focuses little on combat, and heavy on RP. This devalues a +1815 sword and takes the focus off of being bad ass, and puts it more on interaction between players and npcs.

method 3: A hybrid mix of both methods, usually resulting in angst and buttmadness for players and dm's, but sometimes working out perfectly.

My opinion is that most groups end up trying method 3, and finding the game lacking. Mainly because everyone involved has a different idea about what that hybrid method balance should be.

Most of these issues can be prevented/solved by a little prep work before the game begins.

Example: a player wants to play a hybrid game where his PC is bad ass in combat, and still has an interesting back story and plot. The DM tells all players that they'll start in a small fishing village as kids who've grown up together. The pc however, wants to play a half drow warlock or some shit....at this point, there will be issues because the dm and pc's are on different wave lengths about what the game should be.

Your 'three ways' make no sense. They're not distinct categories, they're an incredibly broad spectrum which only describes a single aspect of personal and group playstyle, with no nuance or understanding of why different people enjoy different things, and no real argument for why different playstyles somehow creates more problems in D&D than it does in other systems.
>>
>>53062428
Racial issues should also be worked out ahead of game start up.

>why the fuck would that drow be in a human village?
>why is there a dwarf, a pixie, and a warforged all growing up as kids in a small village? WTF kind of village is that?
>You're an elf? Why aren't you in the forest fucking tree knot holes, instead of living like a human peasant?
>You're a fighter? that's fine, most villages have someone who could have taught you some lv 1 basics.......you're a specialist necromancer? Where in the fuck did you learn that shit? Not in the starting village, where most can't even read/write.

Working these issues out ahead of start up, can set a theme for the campaign or game, and end a lot of issues before they begin.

The "why" different people enjoy different things, doesn't matter anon.

Simply put, people just DO. They enjoy different things. They enjoy different parts of different games. Why doesn't matter really.

You can't make someone enjoy something they don't want to enjoy. Thus, being up front about WHAT and HOW you enjoy the game, is important. WHY they enjoy (x), isn't important.

Ever have one of those games that you'd LOVE to play again? That even years later, you remember it fondly?

Here's mine. Remember-able, remarkable, and fun story's from the table general thread.

I have to set the stage here first. 4 of us decided to play a game of d&d, something we'd not done in a long time. Our DM (we'll call him Shawn, because that's his fucking name), volunteered for the job, and said he'd dicked around with a setting for a long time, and would like to run it.

We agreed and everyone showed up to play. We picked my house, because I'd just turned my den into a game room.
We rolled of course, because we're old school.

I got a mediocre fighter, one guy got a sorta weak mage, and one guy got the rare Paladin. 3 6's on cha.... there were cheers as he rolled the final number he needed.

So, a fighter, a mage, and a pally. We all agreed to play 'good' pc's, so as to not cause issues with the pally's code.

Story begins below........
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>53053197

>DM starts each of us off in different locations.
>We rolled for backgrounds, I don't recall the other two pc's backstory too much,
>My little fighter was the son of a farmer. I'd been trained by an old guard, and taught the basics of sword play.
>We were subtly steered towards becoming guards on a wagon train leaving soon
>After a month on the road together, and some fun RP at the fireside, we all agreed that our pc's were fast becoming friends
>a bandit attack gave us our first chance to draw blood together
>When we arrived at our destination, we dropped the surviving bandits off at the jail, and collected a small reward
>This began our lives of adventurers
>And ended our first session, just shy of lv 2
>One thing about shawn as dm.....he never said "No, you can't do that"
>He'd say "Well, you can try, but you may not survive"
>The choice was ours, he just set the stage.

>We heard about a village that needed help with kobolds coming out at night to attack farmers
>We head that way, and by the time we arrive, we're a solid lv 2.
>We check with the villagers, and eventually (after a lot of work), track the kobolds to their den.
>The mage dies a brutal death, catching a couple kobold spears in his back
>The pally and I survive and clean the kobold nest out
>We get some great treasure rolls, (no magic, but lots of gems/gold)
>We bury the mage, and the DM tells him to reroll if he'd like to
>We could have tried to bring the mage back, but we didn't have the coins or the ability to do so
>The player said he'd roll one up next session and we'd figure out how to work him in
>The pally wanted to give all the gold except a small part to the local village to help them rebuild some of what the kobolds had destroyed

cont..

>We donate the gold to the villagers and build a nice little tomb for the mage (since he was our friend after all)
>We continue traveling east, with no specific destination in mind
>We help the next village get a trapped boy out of a collapsed mine
>we also reach our next level
>We continue going east towards the ocean..
>We stop to help a farmer make peace with his neighbor, and prevented a bloody (if small scale) family feud
>We explore an old ruined tower and kill some undead
>we gain another level, and realize at this point that we're still using our starting gear, and have basically no gold to upgrade
>the pally says he didn't mind, as our starting gear was working fine so far
>A few more skirmishes with roaming monsters saw us reach level 6 by the time we hit the coast.
>The guy playing the mage came back next session, and spent the entire time reading the complete book of wizards, and didn't bother rolling up a new pc
