An ancient forest of giant trees somewhere in the Golden State, where you tagged along for a mission to an abandoned Gem structure. From what you've been told the place is some sort of recording center, but just because it's abandoned doesn't mean it's inactive. Having found out the hard way, the team came under fire by defensive measures in place within the structure, which reacted to your entry. In similar state of disrepair as the structure itself however, the more capable or at least risk-taking members of the team managed to disable the defensive measures, so the coast may be clear from here on.

Even so, the strange unknown of the structure built into and among the giant trees here, lies ahead. You're starting to wonder if you picked the wrong alien space rocks to associate with, although their presence does help with any concerns or fears of danger, at least.

You are Owen, a 20-year-old newcomer to the town of Diamond Shoals, and new acquaintance of the resident Gems there. In your spare time you've been helping them out with the odd job here and there, though this is another proper mission you've accompanied them on. And so after making your way into the structure and past the initial defenses, you've come upon some sort of odd little storage room. You'd think it to be a vault considering those previous dangers, but there are other doors into and out of the room you can see. Either way, situated around ledges adjoined to the walls, are little display areas with different, strange looking objects in each. You can only guess of their purpose, but while some are missing, the rest look like they haven't been moved in a long time. The buildup of dust and eroded, crumbled portions of the room are signs enough of that.

At that moment, Sol is trying to keep Lee from being dragged towards one of the larger objects, apparently having attracted the few gem objects which Lee herself owns. Emma is busy examining the place but taking care not to disturb anything. Sarah meanwhile hangs back with you, holding Bentley and on alert for any signs of danger. Like you, she doesn't seem comfortable here, and seems content to do as the both of you were told and remain behind Emma in case anything should go wrong.

>Try to help out Lee as well, so she doesn't get pulled into some weird gem item.
>Check out some of the items yourself, you shouldn't have to worry since you don't own any gem items yourself... right?
>See where the other doors lead, maybe there's a clear way out of this place?

The three-hour drive was largely uneventful. Traffic was practically non-existent, enabling the driver to punch it at full speed. Takao had been engrossed in the folders and forms that she had brought along, past inquiries and appeals from her attempts at doing what the both of you—well, mostly you—had decided to throw protocol and bureaucracy out the window to reach a conclusive resolution towards. There was the odd sheet of paper that she handed over to you, but she hadn’t been in the mood to even point out the views of the passing towns, farms and hills, all the way down here, to Ebisu. Your driver, a young man about your age that looked like he had probably been bereft of sunlight and good food, wasn’t much of a talker either. Aside from an inquiry on his payment, he hadn’t said a word.

So when the first sentient being to engage you in conversation after a windy ride down south turned out to be a mustachio-ed Navy personnel member at a gate barring you from fulfilling your purpose for those three hours, you were, of course, understandably (at least by your standards) a little more than annoyed.

Especially after repeating yourself over and over again that you had urgent business to attend to with the Committee of Ceremonies.

‘I’m sorry,’ he makes a brief look of disgust, pausing as he reads the piece of paper that held the signature and stamp of the Committee, before turning back to you, ‘Commander, but a letter telling me that you have permission to process an appeal isn’t going to just make this magically lift up. There’s something we like to call procedure’—he spares Takao a glance—‘and I sure as Hell don’t have an obligation to let someone not from the anchor and rope past these stripes.’

You throw him a tired gaze.

‘Mosey on back now—this ain’t your magic fun club.’

>‘Look, this is really important. We lodged an appeal. We’ve been on the road for three hours.’
>‘If this is seriously how you treat a fellow soldier, I’d hate to see how you treat an enemy.’
>‘I really need to get in there.’
>‘You’re trying my patience.’
>‘All right, but YOU’RE going to have to be the one to tell Toecutter that I didn’t have sufficient authorization.’

You are a group of humans or human allies who have all bought quite expensive fare on board a modified Litharian vessel. Your portion of the ship has been scaled up for your comfort and left off limits for crew. Still it is quite cramped and crowded. Why are you on a Litharian ship you may ask, it is because only Litharians will fly into the dead zone, much less land on an inhabited planet within. You are after a pirate treasure rumored to be hidden on Pyrosis IV.

Dungeon Civ takes place inside a stereotypical RPG Dungeon.

SUMMARY: You are a race of Slimes living on the 55th floor of the Dungeon. Floor 55 is a Ruined City which grants defensive bonuses. The most recent Dungeon God has granted all the creatures on your Floor sentience and the ability to grow beyond their initial parameters. You were a mid level boss named Kulnarth (the all consuming) a Royal Slime. Now you are a full fledged
Hero in your own right. You've made powerful enemies including both the Floor Boss, a Demon by the name Eviscorax, and Adventurers bent on destroying you for being a monster.

DISCORD: https://discord.gg/Q5hBymV

RECAP: Both the supporting zones of the royal castle had been swept clean of opposition, but the Castle itself is protected by an enormously powerful magic barrier that prevents your forces from advancing. As if that weren't trouble enough, the powerful witch Selendra has captured the former Armory for her own ends. Ash has been trapped inside the newly formed Zone with no apparent way out. You Machine ally Woolsworth has completed a device to drain the power behind the magic barrier and allow you to finish our conquest of this Floor.

Breeding determines how quickly your race spawns and respawns, and the Floor unit cap for your race.

Melee determines how well you fight with Melee weapons, and the maximum level of Melee weapons your race can equip. Also determines your base defense against Melee attacks.

Ranged works like Melee, but for Ranged weapons. Ranged weapons do less damage than Melee weapons on average. Also determines defense against Ranged attacks.

Magic determines what type of Magic you can equip. Equipping a type of magic will often change your type conferring bonuses and weaknesses. Also determines the strength of your magic and defense against magic.
(Some magic will require a Melee or Ranged roll)

Technology is useful for building and detecting traps, and determines the best equipment your race naturally produces. Also effects accessory limits.

Diplomacy affects party size, trade, and your diplomatic interaction with other races. Also determines whether or not you can accept a certain race into your Hero's Party.

Many of these can be improved or modified.

>Heroes

A hero is a unit well above the average for its race. Some Dungeon Races generate Heroes naturally, others have to work towards them. Heroes are allowed to equip special equipment and act independently of their racial holdings.

Sometimes a group of Heroes will descend into the Dungeon from the Outside. These are almost always powerful beings hoping to challenge the Dungeon God. It is not unheard of for such Heroes to annihilate entire Floors.

>Floor

The Floor is your world, but that doesn't mean you know all its secrets. Becoming the dominant Race on a floor can allow you to increase its Level.
Floor 55 has recently become a level 3 Floor.

>Stronghold

The Stronghold is the center of your Race's power. Heroes will rest here when not on assignment or questing. And the items of fallen Adventurers and Heroes will be stored here. If your Stronghold is destroyed all of your basic racial units on that floor will die immediately leaving only your Hero units. Your Stronghold is the Ruined Baths zone next to the Floor starting area.

>Dice

All rolls are 1d20 best of three. Your roll will be modified by magic, equipment, accessories, racial bonuses, and other modifiers as deemed necessary.

The Mermaid servant of Undine nods enthusiastically as Kulnarth decides to enter the door adorned with staff and spellcraft.

“Mighty brave of you, just remember you can always retreat back here for me to heal you if need be.”

Confident in his victory Kulnarth strides forward past the stone slabs of the door as they grind outwards across the ocean floor.

Past the stone portal Kulnarth steps into what appears to be a completely separate world. The arena is choked with luminescent kelp beds. Their faint green and blue glow is the only light here, and the water feels oppressive with its weight. Brilliant flashes of dayglo orange betray the presence of fish here and there. Seated on a boulder in the middle of all of this is a slender young woman made entirely of kelp. Her attention snaps away from a school of fish near her hand as she turns to regard Kulnarth.

“Well met challenger. If you would like, I will hear any last words you have before we start.”

Having said her piece she stands and raises her right hand. An ornate staff of ice forms within her grasp, and as it does so a chill penetrates the arena.

Inside the Witch’s domain Ash realizes that she has little choice if she wants to end this diabolical ritual. Everything must burn! Offering a short prayer of supplication to Lord Ifrit she kneels before the ritual focus and begins concentrating. The guards may be distracted by her Sprite, but if she starts casting repeatedly there's no way she won't be interrupted. So the building needs to be destroyed in one fell swoop.

Raising her arms high above her head Ash Casts Fire 5. Then she casts it again. Over and over she casts the spell without any target. Each time the swirling mass of Fire hovering over her gets larger and larger. Sweat beads on her brow unrelated to the intense heat that fills the room. At last when she can hold the power no longer Ash opens her screwed shut eyes to fix them on her target the

“Verde I’ll get Lex.” You shout moving as fast as you can to the side as your partner begins throwing out those green blasts of hers in a wide barrage of explosive power; they whistle through the air like artillery shells and you turn your attention to the chandelier and debris pinning the emerald barrier underneath it’s weight.

One hand on what was once a curling serpent’s head, the other on a crossbeam that connects onto the central circle of the frame, it’s difficult to get your body under it to shoulder the weight of the centrepiece is colossal and you bend your legs and inhale.

Exhale.

You kick off from the ground with a savage roar and the metal goes flying into the wall nearby, allowing Lexington to lower his shield. He looks around quickly, eyes glowing with his enigma - you stand clad in gold patiently waiting for his analysis. “Well fuck. The sonovabitch broke one o’ the planar walls.”

“No time. What do we do.” You say calmly, rolling your neck to a satisfying crack and preparing to support Verde.

“We have options; but try killing him first. If that doesn’t work then we -” With a screech forms begin falling from the sky like meteorites; trailing black lines that reak of corruption and rot. “If that doesn’t fix this then we look at the options with consequences. Get in there!” He commands as he begins summoning his gear and sending lightning bolts lancing up into the cloudless orange sky.

MIRANDA
You can see Purps immediately shoot off towards her master as she sees the barrier go up- the creature turns to her, but you’re not letting it happen- a barrage of energy flies from your palms as you let rip with a multitude of magiblasts meant to box the thing in more than really injure it- you weren’t sure what this thing could do, and better to have all hands on deck than risk it getting too nervous to really give effort towards hurting you. You can see the creature leap away- somehow even that looked flashy- and the all too familiar dance of trying to pen in a moving target begins, although they don’t normally madly cackle in amusement.

The thing’s as squirrely as you expect; you’ve got enough experience by now that you know that simply leading the creature isn’t going to do the trick- they seem to slip away like they’re made of smoke or water, and you find yourself having to use bigger blasts to have enough of a splash radius to convince the creature where to dodge- not that it seems troubled judging by the way it seems to add little flourishes to its movement as you do your best to keep on the move as well to avoid any potential retaliation or even it trying to close distance for some trick.

A blast seems to connect flush- that wasn’t even intentional, but you’re not fooled for a sec- yep, there it is.

Bastard just wanted a dramatic smoke trail out of that explosion, you swear. Well, hope the splinters were worth it.

It's a cold and rainy night. You always found the light pitter patter of rain and squeaking of wind shield wipers to be... therapeutic. You're driving up Belt Parkway in your rusty trusty North American Ford Escort, street lights swooshing by as you travel back home from JFK to the Bronx. On the radio you hear the latest goings on, Times Square once again victim to superhero shenanigans. Heroes versus villains and it's somehow the Insurance Company that wins.

You chuckle at your own joke. Indeed, superheroes are almost part and parcel to living in the big city. Your apartment was once blown up by MODOK! Freak almost crushed you underneath that seat he flies around in. Was that your exit? Damn it it was. No biggie, you'll just take the next one.

You switch off your radio, it was either super news or a scratch Phil Collins CD, and you can only listen to Son of Man so many times before you start swinging from vines. You recollect your recent memory on the drive, and remember where you're coming from.

>No no no, you were called to Nevada to investigate "Aliens" that had crashed.

>What is "Backwoods"?
Short answer: NOT Fallout.
Long answer: A post apocalyptic setting set in the fetid marshes of the American South, the dense forests & looming mountains of the North, or the arid deserts of the west. Set in alternate retro-futuristic future where a coalition of communist states in Central America & the Caribbean financed & armed by the Soviet Union launch a series of devastating nuclear attacks across the USA as reprisal for perceived military aggression. This triggers a world-ending exchange between the world's great powers, eradicating most of the Earth's population in the process. Any survivors of the blasts were confined to the isolated, oft-forgotten parts of the earth. Such bedraggled men and women formed settlements and factions to contend with the harsh conditions, including the debilitating fallout, wandering mutated beasts,& other belligerent survivors. No one was left unchanged by the great scouring & savagery became the rule rather than the exception.

Centuries have passed since the apocalypse, & the world is still recovering. Whilst the majority of the fallout has subsided, the surface is still fraught with peril; bedraggled tribes clash for what little drinkable surface water there is & hulking mutated horrors prowl and stalk the undergrowth. The technological marvels of the old world are a source of both fixation and abhorrence amidst the population, for as potent or lifesaving they can be, the threat of total re-annihilation are very possible. won What's more is that the cataclysmic effects of the nuclear exchange appears to have opened up a rift between dimensions, & nameless, eldritch things claw at the sanity of men.
>Sounds pretty eh. Aren't there like 12 other post-apocalypse quests up right now? I think i'll pass.
The difference between Backwoods & other settings is that YOU (YES YOU) decide the location of the setting. This is just a little experiment I wanted to try out. Want to see a quest based essentially in the back yard of your small town in your home state of Montana, or if you just want a post-apocalyptic game in Louisiana if you think it sounds cool? Simply say so and we'll vote on it! Of course, I'll have to make some compromises to keep the setting interesting for the mind's eye, but its ostensibly up to you!
> So its a home brew thread? Fuck that shit! I ain't writing your setting for you!
Don't you worry about that. Simply vote on a location and/or state you'd like the quest to be set in & I'll start writing up some general fluff. Also, keep in mind the population density of the area in mind; the setting is called Backwoods after all, so it wouldn't make sense to set it entirely in the ruins of Chicago.

To start things off, I'll provide some basic choices for settings:
>Wetlands of Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia.
>Delmarva Peninsula, Maryland/Delaware.
>Appalachian mountains.
>Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, Montana.
>Other? Maine, New Mexico, Arizona? (Please specify)

Britain. All the ancient magic and shit is awake following the apocalypse. Black annis prowls the marsh, kelpies lurk in the lochs, an island rose out of the sea with a tomb on it etc.
>>
>>1593394
Interesting choice. i'm not sure Britain would survive a nuclear blast, though, considering the geological composition of the Island. I'll consider it though.
>>
>>1593306
>Other? Maine, New Mexico, Arizona? (Please specify)
The middle of michigan. Close enough to big cities to allow anons' exploration looting itches to be scratched, but still having a low enough population density to fit the setting.

In addition, I support RustAnon's idea of magic returning after the apocalypse. It would be cool to see Native American myths around us, and other cultures myths arise should we travel elsewhere.

You are small. Not only in your stature, but also, in your age. Your parents seem to be in an argument. Always. There hasn't been a fleeting moment where you could call home, home. Not long ago your mother left. Father likewise. No home. Even when the fighting had finally stopped. Forgotten. Alone. In this house of yours nothing seemed like it was. A silent place full of nothing you hold dear. What had been is far away. Never to return. You can't take it anymore. This place of despair brings you to the brink of self pity. If only things had been different. Now the first steps you take outside your home. Will be the only steps you take on your own.

Marching onward into this unknown world. That you dare not step foot in. Yet you embark on this journey on your own. Away with lectures; to the forbidden land that you've been told to never enter. It escaped you. You know this is bear territory, but you went in anyway. Mother always warned you about this forest. Fear rushes in and you are unaware of your surroundings. All you can do is run. Not knowing where or why. Only thought is run. Run. Run. Run. You don't stop. Not even when your body aches. Can't stop. Not now. Then you reach a small stream. You can walk through it, but you walk across a fallen log to keep your feet dry. There is a clearing. Not far from the stream. It's a mass is exponential. It's paramount that you make some headway. Continuing onward in the the plains of what seems like a new world. I was so used to the shade of the trees. Now the bearing heat is almost too much to handle. But I can't stop now.

Many years ago the world was baptized in atomic fire.
From the ashes that cast man down there arose a new generation of people, more awakened by the brightness of the bombs, and more alive than the ancestors that had come before them. They saw technology as the defining trail of destruction, and in an effort to rid themselves of the total obliteration of mankind, they went about drowning the world in fire once more. Though this fire burned no flesh, instead it burned the likes of papers and texts, old machines melting upon pyres of leather bound knowledge like the world was better off living as it once did, dim and ignorant.

Since the bombs there has been an unknown number of years gone by, but many assume centuries. There lives now many scattered tribes living as their book burning ancestors intended, without knowledge of the old world, nor how to rebuild it.

Now it is their task to stray away from the old, and construct the new. Only the gods know who may rise to power in the coming years over The Lord's Crater.

Every civ will be allowed two actions per turn, those of which may be:

-A Technological Breakthrough
-An Act of Labor
-A Cultural Development

Actions cannot be the same type in the same turn, such as a civ may perform an Labor & Culture action in one turn, but may not perform a Culture & Culture action in one turn.

Now please wait a moment as I introduce the three civs you will be playing as.

The Children of The Abbey are a religious movement that have inhabited an old abbey along the outskirts of town for generations now. They have taken on men and women from around the region who seek to adopt a religious lifestyle and accept the new age teachings of their skewed version of Christianity.

They believe that in the event of the atomic bombings that god himself was struck down, but as an immortal being he arose once more, this time as a lord over the new state of man, one that had been changed by the atomic destruction just like the land he created had been.

Currently The Abbey has been maintaining itself off a mutated form of lake moss that grows grand berries upon the water's surface very much akin to grapes. In their time they have been discovering how to refine the juices of these fruits into wine.

The Kings of The Crater are men of the old ways.

They long ago were some of the most prevalent warrior clans in the wastes, and have followed the likes of great warriors as lords and kings over the people of their clan. It was only after a savage defeat in the frozen north lands in a region far from this one that the tribe was divided.

The tribe now living near The Lord's Crater has become settled in believing they are the beings chosen by the god of war to carry on the legacy of his children. They believe that their monarch is a direct descendant of The War God himself, and intend to let his iron fist show that the weak should not only fear the strong, but should be subservient to its might.

The Forest Men are a pushed people who have been persecuted throughout their existence by the likes of demons that they believe are out to end their way of life.

They have come to believe that the gate to the hells themselves exists within the dead and burned forest that they live beside, and that the creatures that the abominations that walk out of it are demons that have escaped int the mortal realm to feast on man. They claim that the devouring of these creatures will bless man with demon's blood, and will make them stronger against the demons that come after.

Through journeys into The Dead Forest they have seen who shall be chosen as their new leader by seeing visions of fearful demons, and knowing that the head of their tribe should be whoever the gods have foretold shall be the bane of demonic life for generations to come.

Move on but take note of it and its surroundings. If it got here recently, that might be why it's not in the briefing.

FzzzzZZZZT-
BANG!
POP!

Another firecracker explodes right next to your ear.
Okay, you're lying, it's not next to your ear. It just feels that way. It's just yet another loud, obnoxious noise that has interrupted your mid-day rest. If it didn't subtley remind you of cannon fuses; you could probably get some more comfortable sleep.

POP!
Another lone firecracker grabs your attention from rest. The winter festival seems to be getting more and more teeming as the day goes on.
This is going to be a long few days. You can already tell.

You are Jack Albator; cunning adventurer, masterful fighter, and expert swashbuckler. Today is the first day of the winter festival here in Biscotti, and the festivities have been nothing short of lively. There's a good word to describe it; lively. Lots of new faces in town from all sorts of towns and countries whose names you've already forgotten. At the very least, it's a sign that peace is slowly returning to the country you now call home.

It's been two weeks since the very last of Konditorei's splinter forces were eradicated; with thanks to Louise and Kayda's keen observational skills. Antonin, the suspected leader of the splinter group, now sits uncomfortably in prison awaiting evaluation. You don't think he's evil, but you do think he's really, really stupid. Ultimately, it will be up to Charlotte to decide what to do with him. Odelle, his sister, has been fighting for the past few weeks for his release. Of course, she's probably the worst judge of character regarding her own brother.

Subsequent reports have shown that any sort of support base has almost completely collapsed. So for the time being; they're a non-issue.

Right now, you have something more pressing on your mind.

On the second day of the winter festival is where the fun part begins: the winter festival games. One of those games has been decided to be an all-out fight between your entire crew versus the titan of a man known as 'Atlas'.

You've been training for the fight, but you've been slacking; you admit. You could be practicing with your comrades right now, but-
Well, you're tired. There's nothing more to it than that. It's noisy outside, and the winter chill had washed over you. You decided to just take a break until noon. Or maybe later. Truthfully, you didn't really train yesterday either. Or the day before that. It's been a lazy week.

It's hard to imagine, but- In just a day it will be over. This time tomorrow, you'll either have a powerful new ally on your side, or-

Well, you'll worry about that when you wake up.

"Hey!" You hear some knocking at your door followed by a shrill voice. "Are you sleeping?! The match with Atlas is tomorrow! Aren't you the least bit concerned?!" The girlish voice sounds through your door.

>Aw Yuuki, just a few more minutes.
>Aye fine, Aye'll wake up.
>Yar it's fine. It's naptime!
>Only problem is yer naggin' right now, Lass.
>Other?

Which group do you join to survive and why?

The Lone Wolf (masters of the element of surprise, equipped with survival gear, increased thieving) [no support or civilization benefits]

The Whites (low crime rate, superior genetics for offspring and 10% intellect boost) [hated by all]

The Blacks (speed boost and ability to seduce white women for slaves) [low IQ high crime rate]

The Neets (massive underground tendie supply bunkers, masters of memetic warfare, chemical warfare via piss jug catapults) [suffers depression]

The Jews (25% personal money boost and increased deception) [physically weak in melee combat]

The Muslims (superior AOE spells dealing explosive damage and increased damage to liberals) [no alcohol, drugs, or music allowed in freetime]

The Conservatives (10% increased aim, 5% increased damage when fighting liberals, and ability to forage for food via hunting) [forever bluepilled]

The Liberals (25% boost to all offensive abilities because of arrogance) [easily swindled by jews]

The Libertarians (Dont Tread On Me Ability deals significant damage to all those who attack you) [very weak border security]

The Stoners (increased patience and insight, 20% boost to morale, zero negatives)

The SJW's (25% increased dodge chance because hard to look at due to ugliness) [low population growth due to rampant homosexuality]

Only choose based on abilities and skills you think would give you the highest chance of survival.
