White House national security adviser Michael Flynn is under increasing political pressure and risks losing the confidence of some colleagues following reports that he misled senior administration officials about his discussion of sanctions with a Russian envoy shortly before President Trump took office.

>As White House aides scramble to get their stories straight about the exact nature of those communications and as Democrats call for Flynn's security clearance to be suspended or revoked, neither Trump nor his advisers have publicly defended Flynn or signaled that he has the president's confidence.

>Privately, some administration officials said that Flynn's position has weakened and support for him has eroded largely because of a belief that he was disingenuous about Russia and therefore could not be fully trusted going forward.

>"The knives are out for Flynn," said one administration official who, like others interviewed for this report, spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak candidly.

>On Sunday, the top White House aide dispatched to represent the administration on the political talk shows pointedly declined to defend Flynn.

>Asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" whether the president had confidence in Flynn, senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said he did not know.

>"It's not for me to tell you what's in the president's mind," Miller told moderator Chuck Todd. He added that his colleagues at the White House "did not give me anything to say" about Flynn.

>When ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos asked Miller about Flynn's interactions with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the United States, Miller said, "I don't have any news to make . . . today on this point."

>The Washington Post revealed last week that Flynn and Kislyak had discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia in the month before Trump's inauguration.

>The Post's finding, confirmed by nine current and former U.S. officials, contrasted with the assurances made publicly by Vice President Pence and other top administration officials that Flynn never talked about sanctions with Russian officials.

>Based on Flynn's private assurances, Pence, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and White House press secretary Sean Spicer stated publicly that Flynn never discussed sanctions with Kislyak.

>Pence spoke to Flynn twice on Friday - once face to face and by telephone, according to an administration official who declined to characterize the contents of those discussions.

>"Flynn is running out of friends, no question," a different administration official said. "The broad consensus in the White House is that he lied. The vice president feels like he lied. In a position that needs to be no drama, it's nonstop drama. I would be very surprised if he lasts much longer."

>New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, R, an informal adviser to Trump, called on Flynn to "clear up" what happened with Trump and Pence, but he stopped short of accusing him of wrongdoing.

>"I think that's the obligation of General Flynn, his national security adviser, to have those type of candid conversations with the president and the vice president," Christie said on CNN. "And then they will act as they see fit, given all the circumstances."

>Over the weekend at Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, the president privately voiced frustration with Flynn and the political baggage he is hanging on the White House, according to two people familiar with his comments.

>Spicer denied that Trump criticized Flynn to anyone at the club and called assertions to the contrary "fake news."
>>
>People close to Flynn said he feels confident in his position despite the swirling controversy. He flew to Florida this weekend with the president along with other National Security Council officials to engage with his Japanese counterparts during Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit.

>Furthermore, people in Trump's orbit cautioned that it would not be in the president's nature to fire Flynn because doing so would amount to an admission of guilt and misjudgment in the face of media scrutiny, as well as demonstrate chaos in the early weeks of his presidency.

>The doubts about the national security adviser come as Trump faces his first significant provocation from a U.S. adversary overseas. North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the weekend, a move suspected by some experts as designed to serve as a test of components of an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States.

>Trump responded on Saturday night in a joint appearance with Abe at Mar-a-Lago, where he reassured his Japanese counterpart that the United States fully supported Japan.

>Flynn, a retired lieutenant general and a decorated intelligence officer, met Trump in late 2015 to offer advice about his campaign and signed on with Trump the following year. He won Trump's approval during the general election with his willingness to travel regularly and deliver fiery stump speeches trashing Trump's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

>Democratic leaders have called for investigations into the Flynn's contact with Russian officials and for Trump to suspend and revoke Flynn's security clearance.

>"President Trump's kowtowing to Vladimir Putin is endangering our national security and emboldening a dangerous tyrant," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Saturday.

>Rep. Elijah Cummings, Md., the top Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said Sunday on ABC News that suspending Flynn's clearance would be "an appropriate action."
>>
>Trump has not yet issued a comment about Flynn, either on Twitter or in one of his brief appearances before journalists over the weekend. Aboard Air Force One on Friday, reporters asked Trump about The Post's report on Flynn's discussion of sanctions and the president claimed he did not know about it, even though it had by then become a major story across cable news.

>"I don't know about that. I haven't seen it," Trump said during a flight to Florida from Washington. "What report is that? I haven't seen that. I'll look into that."

Two Chinese state-owned mining companies plan to destroy an ancient Buddhist city in Afghanistan in order to get the copper underneath it, according to a new documentary

According to the film "Saving Mes Aynak," Metallurgical Group Corp. (MCC) and Jiangxi Copper are in the initial stages of building an open-pit copper mine 25 miles southeast of Kabul. The location is home to a walled Buddhist city that dates back 5,000 years.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, the site is also home to the world's second-largest copper deposit. China is an importer of copper and a major global refiner of the industrial metal.

In 2007, under the administration of President Hamid Karzai, MCC agreed to pay Afghanistan $3 billion to lease the Mes Aynak area for 30 years.

MCC plans to extract over $100 billion worth of copper deposited directly beneath the Buddhist city, according to the documentary. Archaeologists are trying to save the site.

A spokesman for Afghanistan's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, Zabih Sarwari, told CNBC that the project is slated to start after the completion of a feasibility study.

"I feel pity if they allow it," said Javed Noorani, formerly of the nonprofit Integrity Watch Afghanistan. "The World Bank, in collaboration with the Afghan government, tried to remove the heritage [site] to safety, but this act in itself is a breach of international standards and laws on archaeology."

About 2,300 items have been removed from the site to National Museum of Afghanistan, said Ministry of Mines spokesman Sarwari.

The residents of at least a dozen villages were permanently cleared out to make way for the mining work, according to the documentary, most of which was filmed in 2013.

"People are worried because they have been displaced without being consulted or their consent sought," said Noorani of Integrity Watch Afghanistan, who called the planned mine a "clear violation of Afghanistan's environmental and social impact assessment standards."

In the film, the deputy president of MCC, Zhengou Liu, claims those villagers were informed in advance, and says that "MCC has outsourced some jobs to Afghan companies and is providing jobs to Afghans."

Brent Huffman, the director of "Saving Mes Aynak," told CNBC that he's skeptical about that claim. "Chinese companies have a history of making big promises to third world countries," he said.

In December, CNBC reported that the Muslim fundamentalist Taliban, which has sought to retake control of Afghanistan since being ousted from power in 2001, was claiming it would not obstruct the copper project.

The Taliban itself has destroyed ancient sites in Afghanistan, on the grounds that they're blasphemous. Most notably, the terrorist group destroyed the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan in 2001.

That destruction drew global condemnation, and the ruins of the site are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mes Aynack would qualify as a Heritage site if the government of Afghanistan were to apply for that status, said Silk Road archaeologist and UNESCO advisor Tim Williams.

"This is an outstanding and complex archaeological landscape, with astounding quality of preservation," Williams said.

Locked-in patients trapped inside their paralysed bodies have told doctors they are ‘happy’ using an astonishing new brain computer interface which deciphers their thoughts.

In a groundbreaking experiment, four people who were incapable of even moving their eyes, were able to respond with ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to spoken questions.

On seven out of 10 occasions the patients said they were happy despite their utterly debilitating condition which means they require round the clock care for all their basic needs.

In one case, a family requested that the researchers ask one of the participants whether he would agree for his daughter to marry her boyfriend ‘Mario’. The answer was “No” nine times out of ten.

“The striking results overturn my own theory that people with complete locked-in syndrome are not capable of communication,” said Professor Niels Birbaumer, a neuroscientist at the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We found that all four people we tested were able to answer the personal questions we asked them, using their thoughts alone.

“If we can replicate this study in more patients I believe we could restore useful communication in completely locked-in states for people with motor neuron diseases.”

Locked-in syndrome is classified is having mental awareness but complete paralysis except for up and down eye movements and blinking. In such cases, patients can communicate using simple blinking systems.

However if all eye movements are lost, as in the case of patients in the study, the condition is referred to as complete locked-in syndrome. Most doctors believed it was impossible for people who were effectively trapped inside themselves to contact the world outside.

The research was published in the journal PLOS Biology.
http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.1002593

But the new device was able to pick up the changes happening beneath the services, and read thoughts.

All four patients in the study were suffering from ALS - a progressive motor neuron disease that leads to complete destruction of the part of the nervous system responsible for movement.

They were wired up to a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) which detected responses by measuring changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain.

To calibrate the programme, scientists asked questions which they already knew the answer to, such as You husband’s name is Joachim?

One of the patients Kerstin Wirth, 26, of Leverkusen in Germany, was diagnosed with juvenile ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and within just four years was in a completely locked-in state.

But using the new technology she was able to confirm that her mother's name was Margit and say that the still felt happy with her life.

Professor John Donoghue, Director of the Wyss Center, said: “Restoring communication for completely locked-in people is a crucial first step in the challenge to regain movement.

The technology used in the study also has broader applications that we believe could be further developed to treat and monitor people with a wide range of neuro-disorders.

The researchers said they were amazed to find that all the participants reported being happy most of the time.

“We were initially surprised at the positive responses when we questioned the four completely locked-in participants about their quality of life," added Professor Birbaumer.

“All four had accepted artificial ventilation in order to sustain their life when breathing became impossible so, in a sense, they had already chosen to live.

What we observed was as long as they received satisfactory care at home, they found their quality of life acceptable. It is for this reason, if we could make this technique widely clinically available, it would have a huge impact on the day-to-day life of people with complete locked-in syndrome.

That's because the "climate scientists" who claim the warming trends aren't human caused, are inexperienced. You don't have to be a scientist to look at the data and see the uncanny correlation between GHG emissions and the warming trend. But you do need to be a retard to pretend there's no association. An international study led by Loyola University Chicago is providing compelling new evidence that exercise is not the key to controlling weight.

Researchers who studied young adults of African descent from the United States and four other countries found that neither physical activity nor sedentary time were associated with weight gain. The study is published in the journal PeerJ.
"Our study results indicate that physical activity will not protect you from gaining weight," said lead author Lara R. Dugas, PhD, MPH. Dugas is an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Physical activity has many proven health benefits, ranging from reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer to improving mental health and mood. People who are physically active tend to be healthier and live longer. But while physical activity burns calories, it also increases appetite, and people may compensate by eating more or by being less active the rest of the day.

Some experts have suggested that a decline in physical activity, especially in the workplace, has been a key contributor to the obesity epidemic. But research such as the new Loyola study, in which physical activity is objectively measured and participants are followed over time, has not found a meaningful relationship between weight gain and physical activity.
The Loyola study is one of the primary outcomes of the Modeling the Epidemiologic Transition Study (METS). Researchers followed 1,944 adults aged 25 to 40 living in five countries: the United States, Ghana, South Africa, Jamaica and Seychelles (an island country east of Africa). The American participants live in Maywood, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Participants are predominantly of African descent and represent a broad range of social and economic strata.

Principal investigator of METS and senior author of the Loyola study is Amy Luke, PhD, professor and vice chair of Loyola's Department of Public Health Sciences.

Previous research has found that when people are asked about their physical activity, they tend to overstate the amount they do. To provide a more objective measure, participants wore tracking devices called accelerometers on their waists for a week. The devices measured the wearers' energy expenditure and step count. Researchers also measured participants' weight, height and body fat. After an initial exam, participants were asked to return after one and two years.

At the initial visit, Ghana participants had the lowest average weights (139 pounds for both men and women) and Americans averaged the highest weights (202 pounds for women, 206 pounds for men). Ghanaians also were fitter than Americans. Seventy-six percent of Ghanaian men and 44 percent of Ghanaian women met the U.S. Surgeon General's physical activity guidelines, while only 44 percent of American men and 20 percent of American women met the guidelines. The guidelines recommend doing at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (such as brisk walking) per week.
Surprisingly, total weight gain in every country was greater among participants who met the physical activity guidelines. For example, American men who met the guidelines gained a half pound per year, while American men who did not meet the guideline lost 0.6 pounds.

Researchers did not find any significant relationships between sedentary time at the initial visit and subsequent weight gain or weight loss. The only factors that were significantly associated with weight gain were weight at the initial visit, age and gender.
