it is a work of genius that concerns itself with the everlasting mystery of humanity as it hurtles on a watery stone across the depthscape of the galaxy.

it is a work that eradicates ennui, demolishes pretention and culminates itself in a tour de force that omits mimicry from its lexicon tomsuch an extent that it bears no familiar axioms, while simultaneously emulating the warmth of the womb.
it has stunned me at every word, every page, a climax and triumph of human accomplishment. an ineffable mark of destiny inscribed on the fragile heart of man in his voyage through himself and the torrential seas around him.

Is the underground man the most despicable character in literature? At least most other evil characters will have some admirable qualities.

I want to read the best of what literature has to offer. So far i'm thinking of trying Virginia Woolf and, although its translated, Marcel Proust. What else? No poetry.

>Later, Clinton brings a similar wistfulness to her account of the second debate with Trump, at which he stalked her on stage, seeking to intimidate her. “Do you stay calm,” she asks, referring to her options, “keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? … Or do you turn, look him in the eye, and say loudly and clearly, ‘Back up, you creep, get away from me, I know you love to intimidate women but you can’t intimidate me, so back up.’ ”

>I would have loved to see her do the latter, but even now, Clinton isn’t sure. This highlights one of my problems with her as a politician: her reserve, her sense of caution, which is also, I would suggest, part of the reason she didn’t win. And yet, if “What Happened” has anything to tell us, it’s that this is part of a larger problem with the culture and the way it deals with women, and especially with successful women, who are generally regarded as a threat. When even someone as accomplished as Hillary Clinton is reluctant (afraid, even) to speak her mind about something we all witnessed — Trump hulking behind her on the debate stage, looming, getting too close — what does it say for the rest of us? Only that we are not as enlightened, as advanced, as we believe.

http://www.latimes.com/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-hillary-clinton-what-happened-20170915-story.html

So Hillary lost because as a woman she needed a safe space. Failure to see this or provide it makes us unenlightened creeps.

Trump was standing 14 fucking feet away to the left. The TV cameras framed and focused the shot to create a narrative.
>>
It's a "right for the wrong reasons" kind of situation. Of course the story is entirely a fabrication of the ghost candidate's ghost writer, but the reviewer here is correct, Clinton is not fit to rule and it shows. Now, if she, as advertised, is the best the female sex can offer, it doesn't look like we're getting a Madam President any time soon.

>Try thinking up a million dollar screenplay
No matter what pseud think, if this was easy, it wouldn't be worth a million dollars.
>>
>>10034064
I agree but not because it requires a lot of artistic talent

Hollywood seems to have contrived this "secret formula" for screenplay that seems to consistently make millions despite the movies all seeming similar.
It's something I can't quite put my finger on since I haven't tried properly analysing any films but every time I go to the movies I always feel like there's something that never seems to change in the plot.

To relate this back to OP I think it's impossible to write a screenplay that can compete with the writers who have all sorts of help in knowing what exactly makes people go see a movie so you're better off just writing a book.
>>
Write a horror script about a haunted house or some shit. That's the fastest way to a million dollars for unproven screenwriters

How do i make money self publishing?

Write books people want to read. Then get them to read them.
>>
>>10034017
Def a good idea..
>>
>>10034017
This is generally considered the easiest way, I think. Scope out the market, see what's selling, and without copying it whatsoever try and write something with a vaguely similar premise. No need to reinvent the wheel. If hamburgers are selling extremely well, then experimenting with spaghetti-O sloppy Joe's is quite a risky maneuver and probably won't go well, so make your own burgers but with different amounts and types of condiments. Personally, I just write what I want. It just so happens my writing is fairly good quality and what I enjoy writing does indeed have a market of sorts so I've made a few hundred dollars so far.

>>10033977
There's different ways you can approach it depending on what you want to write. With erotica, I hear that basically going with short stories and novelettes is extremely popular. Sit down, open it up, and it can be read in a short amount of time. A quick fix of smut. Come up with different locations, different people, consensual or rapey, romantic or manipulative, raunchy or clean, etc.

One of my books that have been met with a degree of popularity is an action novelette with lots of firearms, less than 17k words that a fast reader can definitely finish in one setting. At only $0.99 per sale ($0.35 royalty) there's not much money in it, in fact I make more from KENP so going with KDP Select via Kindle is crucial. That puts the book on Kindle Unlimited for readers to check out for free, but every single page earns you money. I think for August there was $19,000,000 for KENP, and thus it was divided amongst all the KENP that all the books got, resulting in 42% of a penny per page. 200 pages is $0.84 (over $1.00 in Canadian or Australian)

So just keep writing and self-publishing, but if you don't do any marketing then don't be surprised if you barely make any money whatsoever in your first year. If you get $100 you'll be lucky, but hey, you're doing what you love and it's $100 of profit, who's going to say 'no' to that? Spend a year playing videogames and you're spending money, not making it, unless you have some kind of super-successful Youtube or Twitch channel perhaps. Going to need a likeable personality though.

J.R.R Tolkien absolutely shits on everyone else in that pic. It's not even a competition. If we're going to forget Tolkien is in it because it's just so outrageously unfair then probably Star Trek.

Comfy, dreamy, sometimes funny, beautiful and catches you by surprise with its depth. If you like Calvino, Sebald will probably interest you.

The English translation is great, by one of the better English translators of German (Michael Hulse).

I bought a book with them without really realizing. When I got home and started to read the book, I couldn't stand the edges and I haven't touched the book in a year.

it seems like somehow deckled edges allow the pages to be thinner yet feeling full, i had a gravity's rainbow with the deckled edges and it was like the size of a 300 pages book despite actually being like 700, neat trick

I don't particularly care for them

Hello.

Is it grammatically possible to amend a "dangling participle" with a preposition? For example, "when" in the following sentence:

When running, I think nothing.

The fact that you condone and tolerate the degeneration of grammatical rules is sad, and enraging, but regardless, you're not helping with my conundrum —I actually care about grammar, which is why I am asking this.

What's the /lit/ equivalent of this:

>You're not supposed to read it, nobody's ever actually read it. We all just say we've read it, talk about how brilliant it is, and place it prominently on our office bookshelves to silently humblebrag to anyone who drops by.
