Any recommendations to try and improve ones composure and willingness to do not do hedonistic things, specifically anti-procrastination and dedication?

OP, do not read contemporary self-help books. You have one title for homework. That title is Emerson's Self-Reliance. Read that. Read it thoroughly, and read it again. Immerse yourself in the text, shape your identity around its proscriptions, and try your best to subscribe to its ideology. It will benefit you far more than the bullshit that any other anon may recommend. I offer this suggestion not as an American, though I am, and not as a lapsed Britain, though I wouldn't mind being, but rather as a friendly comrade on his own course through life, presenting to you what has been beneficial for me. Study hard, absorb thoroughly, and be dedicated. You're comrade, anon.

>>applying the lessons of structuralism to philosophy
>What does this mean?
That there is some mediating structure between us, the thinking things, and reality as it is

>>no one-to-one link between signifier and signified
>What does this mean?
That there is nothing intrinsic to any object that gives us the word that we use to describe that object.

>>the signifier exists in a network of other signifiers, the 'signifying chain'
>What does this mean?
Signifiers i.e. signs or words that we use to describe things are only distinguished by how different they are to other things per the point above

>>progression of logic is due to the hierarchical organisation of binaries
>What does this mean?
Whenever there is a binary there is a dominant and a lesser aspect of that binary, and Western thought has presupposed one aspect dominates the other without any direct proof

>>a centre (the 'transcendental signifier' or 'logos') which is absent if there is a network
>What does this mean?
The 'transcendental signifier' is the cause of all meaning, but if current philosophical thought suggests there is no point of origin then all philosophy that stems from this belief must be adjusted accordingly, by the logic of the philosophy itself

>>We can't escape language when we talk about language, so language isn't based on the logos
>What does this mean?
The logos is situated outside structures but otherwise gives that structure its form and meaning. Without the logos as a signifying structure we must look for other means that define structure i.e. language, which is not removed from which it seeks to describe

>>he logos presupposes that there is presence and then there is representation
>What does this mean?
That there are derivative forms of truth like in Greek philosophy there is truth or the ideal, then there is the world as we know it which is a lesser form of being, then there is a form even lesser than that to record it

>>with speech being a more direct access to truth than writing by which we record speec
>Why do you presume so?
The Greeks presume so.

>>This is a demystification of a common thought in Western philosophy,
>Not according to above. Great confusioon.
It is according to above. What do you mean?

Sounds on point, OP. I'm not sure what the goal of your post is. Is it to elaborate positions of common sense and philosophical endpoints? If so, you've succeeded in the most obvious manner. Your comments are clear and concise, and there isn't anything to disagree with unless one commits to goofy metaphysical notions or laughably sincere theories of language and thought. I'm not too sure what else to say other than that you understand Derrida's thought processes quite well and why corny materialist conceptions of language fall flat on their faces instead of offering anything meaningful to contemporary linguistic philosophy.

Everybody trying to market Derrida to me makes him sound like a footnote to Heidegger.

Language is indeed the house of Being, yes.

Will the real great innovative philosopher please stand up? Please stand up? Please stand up?
>>
>>10031083
Of course he's a footnote to Heidegger. The whole of the post-structuralist and hermeneutical and deconstructive traditions are just workings-out of work Heidegger already did.

OP, despite your conviction in your own thought processes, I and others need to know the kinds of games at which you'd like to get better before we recommend some stupid fucking book when a Youtube video illustrating strategy would be better. Please be specific instead of shitposting.

In all formats as in physical or computer etc.,

I'm not going to dick around. Literally just search the name of the game(s) in which you're interested, and jump around videos until you find commentary and strategy that appeals to your taste and goals. Without specificity, I cannot offer specificity, so take my advice generally and start Googling.

Post ridiculous quotes from books you reading.

>It was about twenty years ago that I wrote the critical essay “Transgender: Female Hermaphrodites and Male Androgynes,” in which I traced the genealogy of gender-bending in shōjo manga.

University sucks. I shudder to remember some of the articles I had to read as an English grad student.
>>
Why is that ridiculous, OP? Have you never conducted academic research? That seems like a sensible opening sentence that sets the topic and history of the author's involvement. "Tracing the genealogy" is, moreover, a common academic metaphor employed to suggest the work one's put into understanding the topic. Sounds like a sensible sentence overall even if, as you suggest, you don't agree with the oooooohhhhh "transgressive" topics. Grow up, man.

Actual nihilism is pretty patrician. The most reddit philosophy is probably "scientism" where they believe science is the one and true answer to everything and the world can be observed from empirical results alone. Have these gits even read Kant?

How is it possible that billions of people have misunderstood the literary device of metaphor in the Bible?

The Holy Spirit figuratively inseminates Mary, a sign of the beginning of her spiritual life. This is represented by the arrival of Christ. How is this spiritual birth conflated with a literal virgin birth? Are people just morons? Did the ancients not count on us being so stupid? Critical reading / Heresy general.

>>10027796
There were pathologically moronic edgy materialists even in New Testament days, I guess they just didn't give a shit about these groups. They couldn't guess they would become so popular and widespread in the future.
>>
The ancients were not that clever.

The 'virgin birth' myth is nothing but copy-pasted straight from the Persian myth of Zoroaster's virgin birth. The Bible is a semi-literate mishmash of non-original myths, stories, and hearsay from various stone-age middle-eastern societies.

To think that one should lead one's life, or indeed, lead entire nations, by this nonsense is, truly, the greatest travesty of all time.

Went on a date with a girl from work and we started discussing books she mostly reads YA nowadays but he favorite book is Wuthering Heights I told her mine was Catcher in the Rye she twisted her face in disgust and told me she despised it.

I looked at the reviews on Goodreads and the majority of reviews from women are negative. The reason for this seems to be around Holden that he is a weak, boring character.

What's /lit/s thought on Catcher in the Rye

I've noticed, anecdotally, that if the main character is not likeable then it ruins a book for women. Ignatius, Holden, Humbert Humbert, Oedipus, and Marlow have been cited as "ruining the book" for multiple women in the classes I've been in. Maybe it's because women tend to empathize more or maybe it's a product of the digital age training people to automatically decide if they like or don't like something.

Does an idea have to be more complex to be considered truer?
Why do prefer complex and abstract systems over simplified ones?
25 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Complexity and "Truthiness" have no relation
>>
>>10027425
Wut?

Besides, most people seem to prefer simpler ideas. How do you think our democracies function?
>>
>>10027425
The more generalized a statement, the less useful it will be in specific applications, and vice versa.
The more specific a statement, the more testable it is, and the more likely it is that the statement will be soon disproven or modified. This is a good thing.
Complexity is a double edged sword. It can be used to mask obfuscation as dazzling, because the inherent property of the sublime is that it evokes an awe difficult to reduce to a single source. However, sufficient complexity is necessary to discuss complex concepts in whole, depending on how predictable they are and the patterns they imply. The idea is to build a foundational framework that becomes more concise and specific over time, reducing them to constituent principles that are bite-sized enough to properly learn and clarify them. To truly explain something is to explain it away. This is why people hypnotized by pretentious mysticism hate the reductionism inherent in science - humans really are "just atoms, bro" on a fundamental level, but it's the trivializing implications of the word "just" that's the problem here. The small block is not truly preeminent over the larger structure in any system, I believe, but we make these mental incisions as a necessary method of gaining understanding, due to our brains themselves being limited by a kind of scarcity imposed by cognitive load on working memory.
