nabokov's mastery of english (and presumably russian too, although i can't read russian so cannot comment) is unparalleled - imagine joyce if joyce didn't have to spend 20 years writing each book and wasn't the highbrow equivalent of a teenager using a thesaurus for every other word in their essay
