A thought.

Expressionism is ultimately a useless definition. Even when the emphasis of subjective perceptions is beyond doubt the sole main feature of a given work, it is still no more than an inclination that could be found in any period, in any circle, at every level and that can be applied to any style without breaching its rules. What, stylistically, is referred as "Expressionism" should really be given a different name or different sets of names. Expressionism is ultimately a choice that every single artist has had to make since the beginning of art.

Discuss.

no, it was just an art movement. just like cubism, its now stagnated, no real use for it more than in its historical context. all these isms are pretty dumb anyway desu

But that's exactly the point. You could argue that True Detective visual style has a pronounced Expressionist side, given how it deforms reality to highlight the way the characters see their world, exasperating certain lights and colors and so on.

Whilst Cubism and similar definitions at least describe something that is there, a specific set of features, Expressionism as it is defined IMHO has no meaning. If you use it as a synonym for "what they did at the time" is one thing, but usually, it's not used like that. All of its meaning is outside its historical context: the prevalence of the subjective. At the time it was, shall we say emphasized? by a specific group of artists. But it's a feature that has always been there and will always be.

you can still create an expressionist-style painting, just in the way you can still compose baroque-style music . We just happen to not be in that period any more.

Concept: Imagine a really cool cartoon somehow being popular and the background and minor charactes are all oc's from artists on the internet who agreed to that. So in every frame there's a little cameo for that artist and his fan comunity. It wouldnt take more affor than the main characters and their plot because they are just background non main characters. With a character variety like in world of gumball. Imagine your oc in a cartoon even if its just in the corner of a frame.

I imagine it would be a legal nightmare having to go to every individual artist and getting their approval. Plus I don't get how you'd imagine it to work. You'd want them to draw and animate the background character themselves?

They'd have to work within the confines of the project and would probably have to use tools they're unfamiliar with.

What you're essentially suggesting is a clusterfuck animation filled with different art styles. Studios are already filled with a ton of artists but they follow a given style for consistency.
>>
>>2934362
Can't you just convert the artstyle. If the artist wants his oc in there he also has to do something . And to colect the ocs you tweet send me your ocs and open a site with terms and conditions to agree and then they send it with reference and everything.a applying site. How about inbuyed characters.some fananimators(thejamcave) do that when the artist donates a few hundred dollars. I know it sounds like a clusterfuck hard work. But still It'd be really cool tho

Does anyone know of any crazy scenes going on in America, or any English speaking countries?
Obviously crazy shit's always going down on the coasts (LA and NYC) but I'm trying to find a group that embraces creative chaos like adult-swim but is focused on tangible artwork opposed to mainly digital.
Like Dada or similar chaotic movements, using performance, music, sculpture, painting, and everything in between to move people.

The only serious 'movement ' in high art at the moment is trying to make something that Saatchi wants to buy so that the artist becomes the next big thing.

Other than that we are in the era of postmodernism if you like it or not. People are doing tons of different things in tons of different styles. But groups and movements are rare. You do have people like the "kitsch-painters" surrounding Odd Nerdrum, but people do not usually define themselves as belonging to some genre or style of art anymore.

Except for the Realist painters. They somehow stood the test of time somehow reinventing themeselves just enough to survive but never enough to reclaim Courbet era greatness. An unbroken line of painters from Courbet to Schmid.

How do I git gut at shading?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2936825
Not exactly the best example there.

Start by learning different shading techniques and just practice with monochrome images?

It's not really hard if you're looking at reference but if you're trying to shade an image from your imagination then try and understand lighting better.
>>
Practice drawing and rendering from life. If you're using graphite I think it's important to have the marks follow the planes of whatever object or surface you're rendering.
Value relationships as well. Make a gradient of 10 values, 10 being your darkest, and 1 being your lightest. Each time you look at an area to render, ask yourself where on that scale of 1-10 the value would fall and shade accordingly.

It comes with practice and time, too.

What kind of job are you going for? Character design/concept art? Background concept art?

I recommend things that are the same (for example; characters) but are very different (body shape, colours, position) though that last one doesn't have to vary.
>>
>>2933532
Dependign on what you wanna work at, you might want to show different things.
Make sure you show some versatility tho.
Let's say you want to b an ilustrator, for MTG or something like that, you'll probably want to show that you can render things like metal, scales, 'magic', water/underwater shit, and things like that.

nope, i googled it and it shows its a painting technique that doesn't require studies or preparation...

bob says that "learn to compose as you paint"

is this what you mean? that to paint like bob i should get experience on alla prima?

It's the book by Richard Schmid on wet on wet painting that covers a lot of ground. Check the book thread someone has scanned and uploaded a copy.

You mean time lapse.
No one is fucking painting at fast speeds they're doing the piece in real time, they run it through a video editor, put some shitty EDM or J-pop over it, then post it.
There is nothing to critique.
